90-in-90: Edge rusher Jeremiah Attaochu

90-in-90: Edge rusher Jeremiah Attaochu

Breaking down the 90 players on the 49ers offseason roster in 90 posts (over 90 or so days). Today is edge rusher Jeremiah Attaochu. The San Francisco 49ers worked to address their pass rush needs this offseason, but they did not make a big splash. The team re-signed Cassius Marsh early in the offseason, and then signed Jeremiah Attaochu when free agency got going. The team drafted Kentavius Street to play defensive end after his ACL tear heals, but otherwise, that was it. The primary question on the edge will be how Solomon Thomas plays in the LEO role opposite Arik Armstead. When the...

49ers depth chart uncertain due to injury absences

Plenty will change once training camp arrives. The San Francisco 49ers had their second day of OTAs on Tuesday, and it marked the first session open to the media. This meant we finally got some insight into the depth chart, but the information was limited due to injuries. Nobody got hurt in today’s practice, but various prior injuries meant several players were sidelined on Tuesday. #49ers who did not practice today:Richard ShermanTrent TaylorJeremy McNicholsJonathan CooperBrock CoyleMax McCaffreyChancellor JamesArik Armstead (foot) went through the full practice.— Matt Barrows...

Arik Armstead clarifies his foot surgery

Sounds like he’s feeling a lot better. On Friday, word came out that 49ers defensive lineman Arik Armstead was recovering from minor foot surgery, but would be just fine for training camp. Given Armstead’s injury history, this sent some into a pickle with Armstead chiming in on Twitter: I had surgery 4 months ago...thanks for checking on me #oldnews— Arik Armstead (@arikarmstead) May 18, 2018 Armstead was a guest yesterday on The Drive with Carmichael Dave and went into a bit more detail as well with the injury: “I had surgery, a minor clean-up on my foot a couple months ago....

Armstead recovering from minor foot surgery, should be good to go in OTAs

Ian Rapoport is reporting he might miss a little bit of OTAs, but likely very little of it. The San Francisco 49ers open up their OTAs on Monday, and defensive tackle Arik Armstead is in the news. Armstead underwent “minor foot surgery,” according to NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport. It is described as a “minor cleanup,” and Rapoport said, “he should be fine for most, if not all, of the spring drills.” The 49ers exercised their fifth year option on Armstead earlier this month. Matt Barrows tweeted that Armstead was seen in a walking boot earlier this year, so it sounds like the...

Golden Nuggets: Does anyone play outside

San Francisco 49ers links for Friday May 18, 2018 David Fucillo posted an article yesterday complete with the latest Reuben Foster links so I posted a link to the article below for anyone that is interested. I focused instead on links about DJ Reed’s foot quickness, Richie James’ excitement to learn from Jimmy G, the quickness of our running backs and an article from Pro Football Focus on how terrible Solomon Thomas was playing outside last year. Everyone knows how well the Leo experiment with Arik Armstead worked out and it looks like Thomas may have even been worse. Where do we go...

49ers not picking up Tomlinson 5th year option, but in talks with agent

49ers not picking up Tomlinson 5th year option, but in talks with agent

Camp competition could shake that up in a hurry. The San Francisco 49ers chose to exercise the fifth year option on defensive lineman Arik Armstead earlier this week, but have decided not to do so for offensive guard Laken Tomlinson. The team announced the Armstead decision, which they had to prior to a Thursday deadline. They did not say anything at the time about Tomlinson, but Tuesday evening, general manager John Lynch confirmed to KNBR (via NBC Sports Bay Area) that the team will not exercise the option. He acknowledged the decisions are sometimes tricky, particularly given the fact...

5th year options not picked up on two notable pass rushers

5th year options not picked up on two notable pass rushers

The 49ers do need some pass rush help. Maybe worth giving the Jaguars or Broncos a call? The San Francisco 49ers elected to punt on edge rushers in the 2018 NFL Draft. Prior to the draft they re-signed Cassius Marsh and signed Jerry Attaochu, who will join Arik Armstead, Solomon Thomas, Eli Harold, and others in competing to add some oomph to the 49ers pass rush. On Wednesday, we learned a couple pass rushers could end up hitting the open market a year from now. The Denver Broncos declined the fifth year option on Shane Ray’s contract, while the Jacksonville Jaguars did the same thing...

Will the 49ers exercise Laken Tomlinson’s 5th year option?

Will the 49ers exercise Laken Tomlinson’s 5th year option?

Now that Arik Armstead has his 5th year option taken care of, will the 49ers do the same for Tomlinson? On Monday, the San Francisco 49ers announced they would be exercising the 5th year option of Arik Armstead. That’s one of two fifth year options for 2019. The other belongs to guard Laken Tomlinson, and that might be a bit of a question mark. The team did not announce a decision on Tomlinson. They have until Thursday, but it sounds like they probably will not exercise the option. Tomlinson was drafted with the 28th overall pick by the Detroit Lions in the 2015 NFL Draft and really...

49ers exercise fifth-year option on Armstead’s contract

In a mild surprise, the 49ers on Monday exercised the fifth-year option on the contract of defensive lineman Arik Armstead, the No. 17 pick in 2015 who has yet to realize his draft-day potential. Armstead, 24, has just six career sacks and has missed 18 of 32 games the past two seasons due to injuries. However, he could earn $9 million in 2019 if he puts together a breakout season. Armstead’s fifth-year option is only guaranteed for injury. It will become fully guaranteed if he is still on the roster on the first day of the 2019 league year.
