Vikings: Three running backs jockeying for the ball

Of the running backs available for the Vikings, Ben Tate makes by far the most money per game. They might now want to see him earn it.

Vikings want to get a longer look at running back Ben Tate

By Chris Tomasson ctomasson@pioneerpress.com Of all the running backs available for the Vikings, Ben Tate makes by far the most per game. They might now want to see him earn it. Minnesota coach Mike Zimmer said he's looking for Tate to get more carries Sunday at Detroit. Since being picked up on waivers Nov. 19 from Cleveland, Tate has just eight attempts for 30 yards. In last Sunday's 30-24 overtime win over the New York Jets, Tate carried five times for 15 yards. Starter Matt Asiata had 14 attempts for 52 yards and Joe Banyard two for eight. Mike Zimmer would like more carries for Ben Tate, Joe Banyard

The Vikings could look to shake up the distribution between three running backs during the final three games of the season. With rookie Jerick McKinnon placed on injured reserve due to a low back injury, the Vikings have just a running back trio of Matt Asiata, Joe Banyard and Ben Tate. Out of 23 carries between the three running backs in the 30-24 overtime victory over the Jets, Asiata had 19. He finished with 54 yards. “I think Matt probably had a few too many carries,” Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer said. “We’d like to get Ben a few more carries this week as well, and so we’ll...

By waiving Ben Tate and playing undrafted K'Waun Williams ahead of Justin Gilbert, the Browns send the message that the best man plays.

Ben Tate preparing to contribute if needed

Vikings running back Ben Tate participated in his second practice in purple on Friday, and head coach Mike Zimmer said he’s catching on quickly to the offense. He’s “He’s got some explosiveness hitting the hole and obviously he’s a big-bodied guy,” Zimmer said. “He’s done a good job with protection so far. So we’ll see how it goes.” The Vikings might have to rely on Tate against the Packers with running back Matt Asiata likely out with a concussion. He’ll only have three days to become acclimated with the playbook, and his teammates, if the Vikings do activate him on...

Jerick McKinnon need not worry; the Vikings claim they didn't bring sign Ben Tate to be the starting running back.

Meet Ben Tate, the newest Viking

Running back Ben Tate arrived in Minnesota six hours before addressing the media as the newest member of the Vikings.

Surprised Ben Tate arrives, practices with Vikings

Vikings running back Ben Tate arrived to the Twin Cities on Thursday morning after he was claimed off waivers from the Browns. When asked if he was surprised that the Browns waived him on Tuesday, Tate said, “Yeah. Of course. A little bit.” Tate dealt with a 24 hour period of uncertainty on where he’d land before the Vikings won the rights to Tate on Wednesday. “It was tough,” Tate said on the last two days. “After being claimed, I’ve got a girl and a little boy so it’s definitely tough trying to get situated with that. Just traveling, not much sleep and not much eating. I’m...

Zimmer on Tate: 'He's got good acceleration and he's a bit more of a thumper'

Vikings coach Mike Zimmer wasn’t able to spell out his plan for how he’ll use newcomer Ben Tate because, A, NFL coaches are smart enough not to reveal game plans to reporters and B, the running back had just finished his first practice as a Viking. “I don’t know yet,” Zimmer said. “He practiced some today. He got some reps and was in the blitz pickup. He was in everything, so we’ll see how fast he gets. It was a quick day for him.” Zimmer said the reason Tate was claimed off waivers from the Browns on Wednesday is the team’s injury situation at running back, as well as the...

Turner explains decision to bring in Ben Tate

The Vikings claimed former Texans and Browns running back Ben Tate off waivers yesterday, adding him to a backfield that right now is missing its three top running backs from back in Week 1. Adrian Peterson, of course, is suspended for the rest of the season. Matt Asiata is dealing with a concussion, putting his status for Sunday’s game against the Packers in doubt. And Jerick McKinnon, the current starter, has been dealing with a lower back injury that kept him out of practice yesterday. Offensive coordinator Norv Turner explained that the decision to claim Tate, who was waived by the...
