Putting pressure on defenses with 21 personnel

The Detroit Lions will use 21 personnel to put pressure on opposing defenses this season, and they need Eric Ebron and Ameer Abdullah to make it happen. There are a lot of players on the Detroit Lions who can have an effect this season. Calvin Johnson, Matthew Stafford, etc. are all key players, but none may affect the team as much this year as Eric Ebron and Ameer Abdullah. These two players will be the X-factors for the Lions this season, and if they do not perform up to par, Detroit will have a hard time making the playoffs in 2015. With the defense most likely taking a step backward...

Calvin Johnson takes his training to another level

I think it's safe to say Calvin Johnson is prepared for training camp (and perhaps a Batman movie as well). With the offseason nearly over, summer vacation is just about complete for NFL players. I'm sure quite a few players are spending their final moments before training camp relaxing, but Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson does not belong in that category. Instead, he's been busy gearing up for training camp, and he took his training to another level on Tuesday with a Bane-style mask: Gettin' after it pic.twitter.com/LG0RXm1Hlu — Calvin Johnson, Jr. (@calvinjohnsonjr) July 28,...

Lions notes: Calvin Johnson's Madden 16 rating revealed

Lions notes looks at Calvin Johnson's Madden 16 rating, some news on the team's Novi High School practice and more. EA Sports has revealed the Madden 16 ratings for the top five wide receivers in the game. The Detroit Lions' Calvin Johnson received a 95 overall rating, which put him behind Antonio Brown (97) and Dez Bryant (96). Speaking of Madden, ouch: C'mon @EAMaddenNFL! What's a Beast got to do to get a 99 TRUCKING? Projecting the Lions depth chart: Wide receiver

What will the Detroit Lions depth chart look like at wide receiver by the end of training camp? What camp battles are worth watching at this position? Let's take a look. As the offseason winds down, we're going to project each position on the Detroit Lions depth chart and also take a look at some training camp battles. Next up is the wide receiver position. Starters: Calvin Johnson, Golden Tate, Lance Moore We know that Calvin Johnson and Golden Tate are going to be the Lions' top two wide receivers in 2015. Johnson is still one of the game's best receivers as long as he's healthy, and...

Dez Bryant, Cowboys agree to 5-year, $70 million contract

That's a lot of money. Dez Bryant and the Dallas Cowboys have agreed on a new contract worth $70 million over five years, according to a report from Ian Rapoport of NFL media. The contract includes $45 million in guaranteed money, according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen. That's a lot. For comparison, Calvin Johnson's top wide receiver deal is worth $48.8 million guaranteed. There was pressure for Bryant and the Cowboys to get a deal done today because otherwise Bryant would have been forced to play out the 2015 season on the one-year, fully-guaranteed franchise tag tender. A long-term...

Horse Tracks: Is Demaryius Thomas worth Calvin Johnson money?

The big debate around here has been whether Denver Broncos star wide receiver, Demaryius Thomas, is worth Calvin Johnson money or worth Mike Wallace money. I have noticed that generally you all feel he lies somewhere in between as he is obviously better than Wallace, but not Johnson. Then a commenter named lancing_2009 on Mile High Report dropped some knowledge yesterday comparing Thomas to Johnson. The stats changed my opinion enough to send me off to research and follow up with some Mike Wallace numbers later in this post. First, he (or she) compares the two players through their first...

Calvin Johnson Not Worried About 30th Birthday – “Feeling Good Right Now”

Lions’ star receiver Calvin Johnson doesn’t think he is old, overpaid or in decline, Carlos Monarrez of the Detroit Free Press reports. “I’m just playing my game,” he said. “Doing what I set out to do.” The assertion the eight-year veteran makes himself is that two months from his 30th birthday he still has big […]

Five Lions players make NFL Network's top 100

A total of five Detroit Lions were in NFL Network's Top 100 Players of 2015. On Wednesday night, the final 10 spots in NFL Network's Top 100 Players of 2015 were unveiled. As a result, we found out that Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson was voted the No. 6 player of 2015 by his peers. This was a slight drop from his No. 2 ranking a year ago, but Johnson is still viewed as one of the NFL's top players. With Johnson's inclusion in this year's countdown now official, the Lions ended up finishing with five players in the top 100: 88. S Glover Quin85. WR Golden Tate82. DT Haloti...

Even after down season, peers rank Detroit Lions' Calvin Johnson NFL's 6th-best player

Calvin Johnson is coming off his least productive season in five years, but his peers still consider him the best wide receiver in the NFL. The players ranked the Detroit Lions' superstar No. 6 overall on the NFL Network's Top...

NFL's Top 100 Players of 2015: Calvin Johnson comes in at No. 6

Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson was voted the sixth-best player in the NFL by his peers. By Calvin Johnson's standards, 2014 was a bit of a down year for him. He did score eight touchdowns, but he missed three games due to injury and "only" had 71 catches for 1,077 yards. After putting up some otherworldly numbers from 2011-13, it was a bit odd to see Johnson barely get over 1,000 yards receiving. Despite his slight step backward and a notion that Johnson's age is starting to catch up with him, he is still quite highly thought of by his peers. I say that because he was ranked...
Detroit Lions — Five reasons it's still good to have Megatron

Detroit Lions — Five reasons it's still good to have Megatron

It wouldn’t really be wise to write off the 29-year-old Calvin Johnson as too old. The Detroit Lions wide receiver said in June that he knows he has great seasons left and there is no reason to doubt the big guy. Here are five reasons the Lions are still lucky to have the man called Megatron: He looked healthy in OTAs and minicamp. Diving for balls and rarely missing one that was thrown his way. He didn’t resemble the guy who struggle with a wonky ankle most of last season. And, by the way, he still had 1,077 receiving yards and eight touchdowns in 13 games in 2014. Like...

NFL's Top 100 Players of 2015: Calvin Johnson makes top 10

Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson is in the top 10 for NFL Network's Top 100 Players of 2015. By his standards, Calvin Johnson had a bit of a down year in 2014. The Detroit Lions went 11-5 and made the playoffs, but Johnson missed three games and "only" had 71 catches for 1,077 yards and eight touchdowns. Many other receivers would gladly take numbers like that, but for the man known as Megatron, it was a slight step backward. Despite this, Johnson is still viewed as one of the top players in the NFL by his peers. I say that because he has not yet been revealed in NFL Network's...

Lions notes: Laken Tomlinson named ACC Male Athlete of the Year

Lions notes looks at a pretty big award for Laken Tomlinson, Matthew Stafford's pre-training camp plans and much more. This is a pretty big honor for Detroit Lions first-round pick Laken Tomlinson: Congratulations to @laken77 -- 2015 recipient of the McKevlin Award as the ACC Male Athlete of the Year. @theACC @theACCfootball — Duke Football (@Duke_FB) June 30, 2015 Before training camp opens in August, Matthew Stafford is hoping to organize some passing workouts with Calvin Johnson and some of the Lions' other pass catchers down in Atlanta. Joique Bell has his sights set on at...
