Detroit Lions' Calvin Johnson feeling healthy, won't require more surgery

Detroit Lions receiver Calvin Johnson has played through an assortment of injuries the past two years, including a nasty high ankle that hurt his productivity in 2014. But it looks as though he escaped 2014 relatively healthy.

Lions notes: Darius Slay, Calvin Johnson, more

Lions notes looks at Darius Slay, Calvin Johnson and much more. Darius Slay has really looked up to Cleveland Browns cornerback Joe Haden, so I'm sure Slay is quite thrilled to read this: Joe Haden on Darius Slay: "He's a baller. He's going to be solid." — Tim Twentyman (@ttwentyman) January 28, 2015 Well said, Darrelle Revis: Revis on Calvin Johnson: "He's the best in the league and he'll continue to be the best until he's done." — Josh Katzenstein (@jkatzenstein) January 27, 2015 In a piece for ESPN, Pro Football Focus examined "how many above-average players stood ...

Lions notes: Special teams rankings, Calvin Johnson, more

Lions notes looks at special teams rankings for the 2014 season, Calvin Johnson and much more. The Detroit Lions came in 15th in Rick Gosselin's annual special teams rankings, which are based on 22 different categories. I'm honestly surprised they finished that high on the list considering how many missed field goals they had and considering how little their return units gave them in 2014. Joe Lombardi admitted that having a player like Calvin Johnson at his disposal meant there were "added layers of complexity" in creating game plans. Why? Because what you see from opponents on film...

2014 POD Awards: Moment of the Year

What should be named the Detroit Lions' Moment of the Year? Vote now as part of the 2014 POD Awards. First up in the 2014 POD Awards is the category for the Detroit Lions' Moment of the Year. Here are the nominees: Lions open the season with a 67-yard TD pass to Megatron (Week 1 vs. Giants) The Lions couldn't have asked for a much better start to the regular season. On the fourth play of their season-opening game against the Giants on Monday Night Football, Matthew Stafford scrambled and heaved a pass downfield to a wide open Calvin Johnson, who ran into the end zone untouched for a 67-yard...

Lions notes: Calvin Johnson pulls out of Pro Bowl

Lions notes looks at Calvin Johnson, Crezdon Butler and much more. Calvin Johnson has once again decided to skip the Pro Bowl in order to recover from an injury. This year, he's got an ankle injury that needs to heal, so he has pulled out of the game and been replaced by New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. The Detroit Lions signed cornerback Crezdon Butler to a futures deal on Wednesday. Pete Morelli and the other officials from last Sunday better never officiate another NFL game. Just in keeping with fairness, the NFL has told the Cowboys that game officials missed several...

Odell Beckham Jr. replaces Calvin Johnson In Pro Bowl

In some non-coaching related news, the Giants' rookie phenom is going to the Pro Bowl The announcement by the New York Giants that they would be moving on from Perry Fewell and Peter Giunta has taken the lion's share of the news on Wednesday. However, there was another tidbit announced that fans should be excited about: Odell Beckham Jr. is now a Pro Bowler. The Giants rookie phenom was originally left off the Pro Bowl roster, thought by many to be a snub. Beckham earned his invitation to play in the All Star game when Calvin Johnson backed out due to injury. Beckham is the first...

Cowboys contain Lions' Calvin Johnson in wild-card victory

The return meeting between the Dallas Cowboys and the Detroit Lions in Sunday's NFC wild-card game had a different outcome and coverage employed on Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson. In last year's meeting, the visiting Cowboys lost, 31-30, and Johnson destroyed the secondary catching 14 passes for 329 yards with one touchdown. Amazingly enough, Johnson was short of the NFL record for yards in a game (336). In Sunday's playoff game at AT&T Stadium, things were different.
