Jones looks to lead in second season

New England Patriots Blog | ESPN Boston — FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- A promising rookie season for Patriots defensive end Chandler Jones ended with him nursing an ankle injury that limited him during the AFC Championship game. The injury and fatigue from a full season of work wasn't enough to keep Jones from getting back to work quickly in preparation for his sophomore campaign, as the 23-year-old said on Thursday that he began training roughly five weeks after the season concluded. "I was talking about that the other day," he said on the game field at Gillette Stadium.

Should Patriots Look to the 3-4?

Pats Pulpit — Left End: Rob Ninkovich Defensive Tackle: Kyle Love Nose Tackle: Vince Wilfork Right End: Chandler Jones Last season, the Patriots opted to feature a more mainstream 4-3 defense front- and who could blame them? Ever since the Patriots popularized the 3-4 defense, the tweeners that were once undervalued have now been snapped up across the league. The Patriots could no longer capitalize on cheap talent; they had to innovate. The Patriots realized that the passing league has been a growing trend (hard to call it a trend anymore) and that they happened to spend the majority of their defe...

Breaking down where the picks might fit for the Patriots

Boston Globe — It doesn’t appear the group will make as big an impact as last year’s class, but circumstances will dictate that. Last year, the Patriots had two first-round picks and both end Chandler Jones and Dont’a Hightower emerged as starters by the season opener. Later, because of injuries, cornerback Alfonzo Dennard ascended to a starting role. This year, the Patriots traded out of the first round. While it may be hard-pressed for the draftees to crack the starting lineup, a few might, and some will definitely contribute.

Bill drafts for need

With their two picks, they took Mississippi State outside linebacker Jamie Collins and Marshall wide receiver Aaron Dobson. With those selections, the Pats attacked those needs right away. How to best describe Collins and Dobson? Raw talents with tremendous upside.

UCLA DE Datone Jones would be nice bookend

Boston HeraldChandler Jones needs a sidekick. He needs another pass-rushing force flanked on the opposite wing. He needs someone who will bring the heat from the left, while he storms in from the right.Datone Jones has the name, and also has the game. The defensive end from UCLA is a first-round prospect the Patriots could snag at No. 29 in tomorrow night’s NFL draft. If they want a defense with twin towers coming off the edge, Datone Jones fits the profile.

Current personnel: Chandler Jones, Rob Ninkovich, Jermaine Cunningham, Justin Francis, Jake Bequette, Armond Armstead, Marcus Benard (could play linebacker too), Jason Vega Need level: Moderate Overview: While the Patriots have plenty of bodies at the defensive end position, the team could stand to add one more pass-rushing presence to complement the strong play from Ninkovich and Jones, who combined for 14 sacks last season.

Mock thoughts: DE in first round?

New England Patriots Blog | ESPN Boston — A year after moving up to take Chandler Jones, would the Patriots consider adding another defensive end in the first round of this year's draft? Leftovers from Patriots chat

New England Patriots Blog | ESPN Boston — A few leftovers from our weekly Patriots chat: Jeffrey (Helena, Montana): Biggest second year jump: Chandler Jones, Dont'a Hightower, Tavon Wilson, or Alfonzo Dennard? Mike: Jeffrey, I'd start at the top with Jones. At the Super Bowl, he talked about working on his upper-body strength because he feels his body is disproportional. I think a full offseason in the team's program could really help him. Brian (Florida): Mike, do you see the Patriots being an early player in free agency?

1 up for Jones, 1 down for Hightower

New England Patriots Blog | ESPN Boston — How would the first round of the 2012 draft unfold if it was held now? That is a question that Don Banks of SI.com attempts to answer in his enjoyable re-draft (link here). The main theme from a Patriots perspective is that defensive end Chandler Jones and Dont'a Hightower were close to the actual spots in which they were selected. Banks bumps Jones up one spot, from 21 to 20, slotting him to the Titans. "Jones had six sacks as a rookie in New England, and although he didn't finish the season as strongly as he started it, he showed enough ability to get to the quarterback to make the Patrio...

Sharing some Patriots thoughts: 1. Rookie defensive end Chandler Jones made the rounds on “Radio Row” at the Super Bowl on Wednesday, and one thing stood out from watching this and listening to this: That was a more relaxed, engaging Jones than reporters saw on a weekly basis in the locker room. Jones is one of the more personable rookies to join the team in Bill Belichick’s tenure as coach (2000-present), but he seemed to hold back for long stretches of 2012.
