Cowboys news: Zack Martin okay for opener; Dallas on hunt for veteran safety help; more

The Monday morning Cowboys links. Cowboys’ Zack Martin (knee) avoids ligament damage - Adam Maya, NFLThe good news in the Cowboys’ preseason game against the Bengals was Dak throwing a touchdown, the starting offense (minus a few exceptions) put up 10 points, and Chidobe Awuzie’s acrobatic interception. The bad news included injuries, most notably to All-Pro guard Zack Martin. Fortunately, Martin appears to be OK. The Dallas Cowboys received good news Sunday when Martin’s MRI came back relatively clean. The All-Pro guard suffered no ligament damage but instead a hyperextended knee...

ARLINGTON -- As expected, Chidobe Awuzie's phone had quite a few messages on it by the time he got to the locker room after Saturday night's preseason game. The second-year corner hauled-in one of the top highlight grabs made by a Cowboys defensive back in a long time. But it was only preseason, so a couple of his high school coaches snap-chatted him, saying he's got to top it when the games count."It was a cool play," Awuzie said. "I wish I gripped it the first time, but it was a pretty cool play."With 39 seconds left in the first half, Bengals backup QB Jeff Driskel attempted to go deep over...

Cowboys training camp 2018: Chidobe Awuzie has a knee/groin injury, but it’s not expected to be serious

Everybody relax. One of the more electrifying players so far throughout training camp has been cornerback Chidobe Awuzie. Chido is making his mark on the position, and he’s impressing everyone around him. Kris Richard referred to Chido as a “cerebral player” and that level of intellect has been apparent over two weeks into camp. It’s been a different camp for the now-number-24 Chido because a year ago when he was a rookie he was not only wearing number 33, but he was dealing with hamstring issues that plagued him all year. Unfortunately Chido is a little nicked up entering the first...

How long will injury sideline Cowboys CB Chidobe Awuzie?

OXNARD, Calif. -- Cowboys cornerback Chidobe Awuzie took himself out of practice Saturday after suffering a knee injury. He's also dealing with a sore groin. While the team will be careful with the projected starter who has been a standout in the first two weeks of camp, it is not overly concerned. Coach Jason Garrett said he expects Awuzie to be "OK," and the Cowboys will take his situation day-by-day. Awuzie suffered a hamstring injury during his rookie training camp last season that became a lingering issue for the first half of the season.Awuzie watched the morning walkthrough Sunday with...

Cowboys WR Allen Hurns on the toughest DBs to go against, plus goal line observations from Saturday's practice

OXNARD, Calif. -- Receiver Allen Hurns has mostly observed the last three practices as the Cowboys take precautions after he experienced groin tightness. But Hurns, Dallas' biggest addition in free agency, has enough experience going against his new team's cornerbacks to identify which ones give him the hardest time."I'd probably say Chido," Hurns said of second-year cornerback Chidobe Awuzie. "He's very consistent. At the line, he's very patient, and you don't find that from too many guys, especially in press [coverage]. ...Chido's very patient at the line, he doesn't move much, so you really...

Kris Richard is definitely bringing intensity to Cowboys camp

Kris Richard is definitely bringing intensity to Cowboys camp

This could be the biggest offseason acquisition by far. There are definitely some lofty goals for Kris Richard during his first season in Dallas. The new secondary coach and passing game coordinator inherited a young feisty secondary with prospects Chidobe Awuzie, Byron Jones, Jourdan Lewis, Anthony Brown and others to mold. The fingers-crossed-sort-of hope is that they will comprise his new Legion of Boom. Richard is intense. We’ve heard all about how he straps cleats on for practice and gets out there with his players, but it was on full display during Tuesday’s practice. At one point...

Highlights from the fifth day of practice in Oxnard. Chidobe Awuzie, Cowboys secondary dominates Tuesday’s training camp practice - Connor Livesay, Blogging The BoysThe Cowboys starting outside corners are really showing up in camp so far. Livesay gives a good run down of Tuesday’s performance by the Cowboys’ young corners. Chidobe Awuzie and Byron Jones were the two defensive backs that seemed to show up the most in Tuesday’s practice. Cowboys CB Chidobe Awuzie stands out as defense makes So Cal life tough on offense

OXNARD, Calif. -- Cowboys cornerback Chidobe Awuzie still hasn't paid up on his first bet of training camp. He intends to fork over that $100 he owes to fellow corner Byron Jones, who notched the first interception of training camp over the weekend, -- just as soon as he finds time to get to the bank, he says.In the meanwhile, Awuzie impressesd during padded practice No. 3 on Tuesday. He showed up all over the field, breaking up passes, using impressive closing speed and good hands and position to his advantage on a day when the defense made life in Southern California tough on the offense....

Chidobe Awuzie, Cowboys secondary dominates Tuesday’s training camp practice

Chidobe Awuzie, Cowboys secondary dominates Tuesday’s training camp practice

The defense got the better half of the offense in Tuesday’s padded practices. Before today, the Cowboys have only had two padded practices in Oxnard so far in 2018; this leaves plenty of wrinkles to iron out before we can get a true grip on the potential of the team. The battles between the offense and defense in the first two practices over the weekend seemed to be rather even. That was not the case in Tuesday’s practice. The Cowboys defense, especially the secondary, completely dominated the offense from the opening whistle. Chidobe Awuzie and company took complete control of the...
