Chris Conte won’t join Bears’ safety battle until later

BOURBONNAIS — Chris Conte’s fight to restore his reputation won’t start Friday alongside his teammates. Still not fully recovered from surgery on his right shoulder in March, the maligned Bears safety will start training camp on the physically unable to perform list and, general manager Phil Emery said Wednesday, will miss at least the first preseason game. ‘‘We anticipate that he’ll be back during the course of the preseason,’’ Emery said. When that...

Bears' Chris Conte lands on PUP

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. -- Three-year starting Chicago Bears free safety Chris Conte will open training camp on the physically unable to perform list (PUP) and is expected to miss the team's first preseason game versus the Philadelphia Eagles on Aug. 8, general manager Phil Emery announced Wednesday. Conte is still recovering from shoulder surgery he elected to undergo on March 26 to fix a lingering problem that plagued the safety for more than a year.

Stepping up in 2014: Chris Conte

Heading into training camp Windy City Gridiron will profile several Bears players who should improve and make more of an impact in 2014. These aren't necessarily the most important Bears for 2014 or second year players who will improve (though some will be), but players who for one or reason or another didn't meet expectations in 2013 and should in 2014. After looking at a pair of second year players who need to step up in 2014, today attention will be turned to a fourth-year veteran who faces stiff competition and could be playing for his career this year. Not since Gabe Carimi has a Bears...

This Week at WCG: July 5th, 2014

We're bringing you up to date on what's been going on around WCG this week. Last week, we brought you the week in review of what's happened here at WCG. This week, we've been able to put together some more stuff, so in case you missed anything Bears-related this week, let's catch you up. From Sunday: I did some number crunching into Chris Conte, Major Wright, and the defensive line and linebackers between 2012 and 2013. Some took the point to be that I was making the point Chris Conte needed to be kept. That wasn't the point at all; Conte on his best days is probably an average to...

Chris Conte's Bad Year, and Why There's Hope in 2014

We take a numerical and statistical look into the awful seasons of Chris Conte and Major Wright to answer the question: Why was 2013 so bad? One of the things that's bothered me about the 2014 offseason is Chris Conte. I think we can all agree his 2013 season was one that the now-fourth-year safety would like to forget. The Bears' opponents ran roughshod all over the Bears defense, and a sprawling Chris Conte was often the afterimage of that play. But I thought we should take a bit of a look at the safety's play over his career and dig into the numbers a bit - and by numbers, I mean both...
