Bradley McDougald signs with the Seahawks

Bradley McDougald signs with the Seahawks

Safety Bradley McDougald has found a new home with the Seattle Seahawks, signing a one-year, $2 million deal according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. That’s a pretty cheap deal for the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety, who had a lot of trouble finding a taker for his services. Apparently the Bucs weren’t happy with his play, as they chose to re-sign Chris Conte and add J.J. Wilcox instead of retaining his services. McDougald signing elsewhere helps the Bucs in one other way: it leaves the door open for them to get a compensatory pick next season, which will only happen if they lose...

The Buccaneers still have $33 million in cap space and no one to spend it on

The Buccaneers still have $33 million in cap space and no one to spend it on

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers spent a decent amount of money in free agency, giving a big contract to DeSean Jackson and smaller ones to Chris Baker, J.J. Wilson, Chris Conte, Josh Robinson and Jacquizz Rodgers. All of that spending hasn’t led to a significant reduction in cap space, though. According to Over The Cap’s estimates, the Bucs still have some $33 million in cap space, ranked eighth in the NFL. That’s more than enough to sign any free agent on the market four times over. Which leaves the Bucs with an interesting conundrum: what, exactly, are they going to do with all this cap...

2017 NFL Mock Draft: Turning the Bucs into an offensive juggernaut

2017 NFL Mock Draft: Turning the Bucs into an offensive juggernaut

With the first wave of free agency in the books, we have a pretty good idea of which positions will need to be addressed in the 2017 NFL draft — and thus, we can get a better view of the likely draft results. Which makes today’s mock drafts the most useful ones yet. We’re looking at a pair of mock drafts today, and how they reacted to the Bucs’ free agency moves. The Bucs, of course, signed speedster DeSean Jackson and defensive tackle Chris Baker, added safety J.J. Wilson and re-signed safety Chris Conte, cornerback Josh Robinson and running back Jacquizz Rodgers. That addressed...

Bucs signing J.J. Wilcox sets up three-way battle at safety

By agreeing to terms with Cowboys safety J.J. Wilcox on a two-year free-agent deal Saturday, the Bucs have set up a three-wide competition for their two starting safety jobs in 2017, along with returning players Chris Conte and Keith Tandy.

Buccaneers sign safety J.J. Wilcox

Buccaneers sign safety J.J. Wilcox

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have agreed to terms with safety J.J. Wilcox, as first reported by Steve Duemig of 620 WDAE. Wilcox visited the Bucs yesterday and apparently that went well enough. Wilcox is mostly a hard-hitting box safety who works best as a part-time player. He played in just over 50% of the defensive snaps for the Dallas Cowboys last year, after losing his starting job the year before. The Bucs re-signed Chris Conte just before the start of free agency and still have Keith Tandy on the roster, three safeties who probably each work best in a rotation, though Tandy is most...

Best remaining free agents for the Buccaneers

Best remaining free agents for the Buccaneers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have had a pretty decent first few days of free agency. They signed wide receiver DeSean Jackson and defensive lineman Chris Baker, and re-signed running back Jacquizz Rodgers and safety Chris Conte. They weren’t able to hold on to wide receiver/special teamer Russell Shepard, though, while backup quarterback Mike Glennon got a massive contract with the Chicago Bears. They haven’t found a replacement for the core special teamer, but tendered backup Ryan Griffin will replace Glennon. But the Bucs aren’t done yet, so who else could they target in free agency?...

Safety J.J. Wilcox will visit Buccaneers

Safety J.J. Wilcox will visit Buccaneers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are moving along in their free agency plans. After adding DeSean Jackson and Chris Baker and re-signing Chris Conte and Jacquizz Rodgers, the Bucs want more help at safety. According to Jenna Laine of ESPN, the team will host J.J. Wilcox for a visit. The former Dallas Cowboys safety has been linked to the Bucs for a few days, and would make a decent amount of safety. While Wilcox is mostly a hard-hitting box safety, he has a decent amount of playing experience and has played some okay football for the Cowboys. Wilcox would make the most sense as a part-time...

Buccaneers re-sign Chris Conte and Jacquizz Rodgers

Buccaneers re-sign Chris Conte and Jacquizz Rodgers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are re-signing safety Chris Conte and running back Jacquizz Rodgers, the team just announced. Conte started 24 games the past two seasons as one of the Bucs’ primary safeties, but lost his starting job toward the end of last season, in part because of injury, when Keith Tandy took over. He’s not likely to be a primary starter this year, but will add some versatility and depth to a position lacking both, as the Bucs’ only starting-quality safety right now is Keith Tandy. As for Rodgers, the Bucs have talked about wanting to re-sign him for months, but were...

J.J. Wilcox, Buccaneers share mutual interest

Dallas Cowboys impending free agent defensive back J.J. Wilcox and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers share mutual interest, reports ESPN's Jenna Laine. What It Means: Wilcox would provide a sizable upgrade at safety for the Buccaneers, who started impending free agents Chris Conte and Bradley McDougald in the defensive backfield last season. Per Pro Football Focus, Wilcox graded out as the 24th-ranked safety out of 91 qualifiers in 2016. Keith Tandy is expected to start at one of Tampa Bay's safety spots. The Buccaneers were seventh-best last season in Adjusted Defensive Passing Net...
