Bucs Beat: Conte says playing football worth the risk

TAMPA -- Fearful that continuing to play football might one day reduce his quality of life or, even worse, shorten it by a few years, former San Francisco 49ers LB Chris Borland retired last week at age 24 after just one NFL season. Tampa Bay Buccaneers S Chris Conte wouldn't think of

Chris Conte gets $1.5 million from Buccaneers, could be as much as $2.5 million

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers' handed out a lot of contracts over the past week, but we've barely seen any contract details. Thankfully, Aaron Wilson is here to help us out with Chris Conte's deal. Chris Conte Buccaneers deal one-yr $1.5M, $1M salary full gtd, $250,000 bonus, $15,625 per game active roster bonus, $1M incentives playtime — Aaron Wilson (@RavensInsider) March 15, 2015 That's basically what a solid backup gets paid, or a very low-end starter. While this is hardly a commitment to Conte as a significant part of the Bucs' defense, the $1 million in guaranteed salary means he's...

Grade the Buccaneers' free agency efforts so far

The first round of free agency is pretty much over, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have exited it by signing Henry Melton, Chris Conte, Bruce Carter and re-signing a slew of backups and depth players. Now, I like the signings the Bucs have made. Chris Conte isn't actually good, but he's an improvement over Keith Tandy as a backup and should provide some solid competition at free safety. Henry Melton is a very good rotational three-technique who will give Gerald McCoy some much-needed rest, and Bruce Carter is an athletic linebacker who hasn't been consistently good, but has the potential to...

Chris Conte eager to prove himself as Bucs safety

Safety Chris Conte wore No. 47 for four seasons with the Chicago Bears, but as he was introduced Thursday as a new member of the Bucs, he said he'll stay away from the number that John Lynch made famous for Tampa Bay.

Chris Conte To Visit Jets, If Bucs Deal Falls Through

Chris Conte has a meeting with the Jets scheduled if the contract arrangement with the Bucs falls through. The Jets are still hosting safety Marcus Gilchrist, however they also have a visit scheduled with Chris Conte if his reported deal with Tampa Bay doesn't go through. Former Bears safety Chris Conte has a visit lined up to the Jets if the contract details with the Bucs fall through. — vaughn mcclure (@vxmcclure23) March 12, 2015 The former Bears safety is set to sign for Tampa Bay who in turn are looking to release Dashon Goldson. Obviously if he signs with the Bucs, he'll be...

Safety Chris Conte finds familiar faces with Bucs

Free-agent safety Chris Conte visited One Buc Place on Wednesday, and while a contract was still being finalizing Wednesday night, he was excited about the prospect of being reunited with key figures from his two years with Lovie Smith in Chicago.

Bucs to release Dashon Goldson, sign safety Chris Conte

The Bucs continue to part ways with high-priced players from their 2014 team and are now prepared to cut veteran safety Dashon Goldson as they sign former Bears free safety Chris Conte, the Times' Rick Stroud reports Wednesday night.

Buccaneers to sign Chris Conte, hopefully as a backup

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are working on a contract with safety Chris Conte, per Vaughn McClure. The former Chicago Bears free safety will reunite with his old head coach and his old defensive system. Conte is mostly known for not being a good safety, but apparently the Bucs think he'll be a good backup -- and potentially a starter, ew. That's a little unfair to Conte, who has experience playing under Lovie Smith and is a capable backup, or a low-end starter at free safety. He should at minimum bring some offseason competition, and at best be a replacement for Dashon Goldson. Not the kind...

Buccaneers bring Chris Conte in for visit

While the rest of the NFL is busy with blockbuster trades and big-name free agents, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are bringing in Chris Conte for a visit, per Vaughn McClure. Hurray. That's a little unfair to Conte, who has experience playing under Lovie Smith and is a capable backup, or a low-end starter at free safety. He should at minimum bring some offseason competition, and at best be a replacement for Dashon Goldson. Not the kind of player to get excited about, but a valuable addition to a team's roster. The kind of guy who will end up starting five games and possibly turn a loss into a...

Chris Conte will not return to the Chicago Bears

An end of an era? Chris Conte has confirmed that he will not be with the Bears next season. A parting of the ways will occur next week — David Schuster (@Schumouse) March 7, 2015 Chris Conte had some good moments in Chicago and he had some bad, but he's best known for blowing his coverage against the Green Bay Packers in the 2013 season finale. He was a 3rd round draft pick in 2011 and he appeared in 57 games with 52 starts in 4 seasons. His Bears career ends with 9 interceptions and 21 passes defended. While Conte wasn't the best of tacklers, his athleticism was a plus in the...

Oft-injured Chris Conte pursuing next hit with almost reckless abandon

LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. — Chris Conte's litany of health problems last season reads like an entire team's injury report — right shoulder, concussion, left shoulder, another concussion, right shoulder again, right eye and back.

NFL rumor: Buccaneers going after Chris Conte?

According to Rand Getlin of Yahoo! Sports, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will go after safety Chris Conte. The former Chicago Bear played free safety for two years under Lovie Smith after being a 2011 third-round pick. He's started for the Bears the past two years, too, but with significantly less success. In all, he's had nine interceptions and 21 pass defenses over his four-year career. If the Bucs do go after Conte, it's a safe bet that they cut Dashon Goldson and save $4 million in doing so. Goldson has been okay under Lovie Smith, but isn't worth anywhere close to what he's set to earn this...
