Rookie Brock Vereen stepped up when Bears were in a tight spot

Down three defensive backs in the second half Sunday, the Bears turned to rookie Brock Vereen, who made his NFL debut — and played a position he hadn’t seen since college. The rookie safety played cornerback after Charles Tillman left the game with a ruptured right biceps and Sherrick McManis suffered a quad injury. Safety Chris Conte hurt his shoulder diving for an interception in the second quarter. “It was an opportunity, and I was fortunate to make...

Chicago Bears Injury Update: Chris Conte has a sprained shoulder

The Chicago Bears battled through a number of injuries in last night's game against the San Francisco 49ers. Here's the latest on Chicago's injured players. Last night Chicago Bears safety Chris Conte made one of the most athletic plays you'll ever see on a football field. His diving, flying interception of a Colin Kaepernick pass caused him to land on his left shoulder, spraining his AC joint in the process. The shoulder injury that erased most of his off season was to his right shoulder. He will be monitored as the week goes on, but the hope is he will be able to play the next game...

Chris Conte exits after big play; Bears win despite special teams stumbles

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — At the end of a very bad week — a stiff-arm posterizing by Fred Jackson and an NFL fine — Chris Conte had what seemed like redemption Sunday night: a leaping interception of Colin Kaepernick. The joy didn’t last long, though — the safety left Sunday night’s game in the second quarter with a shoulder injury. The Bears did not elaborate on which shoulder he hurt. Conte had offseason surgery on his right shoulder, starting the...

Chris Conte defends his play on Fred Jackson’s big run

Chris Conte was stiff-armed twice by Fred Jackson on Sunday, first at the 20-yard line and then at the 10 before the Bears safety fell backward toward the south end zone’s left pylon. The highlight-reel run set up the Bills’ game-winning overtime field goal, but also embodied the Bears, who were bullied and bloodied in a 23-20 shocker at Soldier Field. Conte had a good defense for his stumbling, saying that, once it became clear Jackson had positioned the Bills...

Bears question marks: Chris Conte doesn’t expect much crowd support

A season of great expectations begins with a very winnable game Sunday against the Buffalo Bills at Soldier Field. But it also could turn into the first nightmarish installment of a brutal first half of the season for the Bears. Here are our questions for Week 1: 1. Are the Bears really going to use a rotation at safety? Yes, at least in Week 1. Chris Conte just isn’t ready to shoulder a full game. He missed most of camp after offseason shoulder surgery and...

Chris Conte has been cleared to play against Bills

Cleared from his concussion, Chris Conte has one guess on how he’ll be treated by the Soldier Field fan base Sunday. “I don’t plan on having a lot of support, that’s for sure,” he said Thursday at Halas Hall. “But I’m going to go out there and play football. That’s what my job is, and that’s what I’m going to go do.” Coach Marc Trestman said he hasn’t given any thought to how Conte — who said this offseason that he planned to prove people...

Expect to see safety committee Mundy, Conte, McCray, Vereen vs. Bills

For Week 1 at least, it will be starter by committee at safety. All four of them, including rookie Brock Vereen, will play against the Buffalo Bills at Soldier Field on Sunday, coach Marc Trestman said. “We’re going to roll them in,” he said. Much of that depends on safety Chris Conte, who practiced again Wednesday and appears in line to be cleared of his concussion soon. Ryan Mundy and Danny McCray started the first three exhibition games, before sitting out...

Bears plan safety rotation versus Bills

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The Chicago Bears' Week 1 plan at safety calls for a three player rotation of Ryan Mundy, Danny McCray and Chris Conte, head coach Marc Tretsman announced. Conte is in the final stages on the NFL's concussion protocol, but he is expected to receive the requisite medical clearance to face the Buffalo Bills on Sunday in the regular season opener at Soldier Field. Conte practiced on a limited basis on Wednesday. "We're going to roll [the safeties] in [versus the Bills]," Trestman said.

Conte, de la Punete, Fiammetta limited

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Chicago Bears safety Chris Conte (concussion), center Brian de la Puente (knee) and fullback Tony Fiammetta (hamstring) all practiced on a limited basis Wednesday as the team started to install its game plan for the regular-season opener this weekend against the Buffalo Bills. The Bears ruled out No. 3 quarterback David Fales due to a shoulder injury he suffered last week in the preseason finale in Cleveland. Conte is expected to receive medical clearance to face the Bills later in the week.
