Yesterday, NBA Center Jason Collins became the first active professional athlete to announce that he is openly gay. In the rather homophobic world of sports locker rooms (see Chris Culliver) , the announcement is obviously a big story because it took an immense amount of courage and I have the utmost respect for Collins for doing so. But is the NFL ready for its gay players to follow suit? For the second time in 21/2 months, the 49ers have issued a statement about cornerback Chris Culliver and insensitive remarks. The 49ers cornerback disparaged women on Instagram. Before the Super Bowl, he made headlines when he said gays would not be welcomed in San Francisco's locker room.

SANTA CLARA — While the 49ers have stated they're internally handling Chris Culliver's latest offensive comments, could Culliver soon be sent packing?

For the second time in two and a half months, the 49ers have issued a statement about cornerback Chris Culliver and insensitive remarks. Chris Culliver met with representatives of the Trevor Project, which counsels gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning youths.
