NFL players still frustrated with roughing-the-passer rule: “It’s really hard to do your job”

NFL players still frustrated with roughing-the-passer rule: “It’s really hard to do your job”

There was ample furor earlier this season when penalty flags were flying during NFL games for roughing-the-passer penalties that weren't, in many cases, all that rough. The consternation was particularly intense over two calls made against Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews for what some described as textbook tackles. Many players and fans expressed their dismay that hits on quarterbacks had been all but banned, in their view, by the league.

5 Questions about Packers-Lions: The 12 Labours of Clay Matthews

We asked Acme Packing Company which deity Clay pissed off. Scholars have worked for years to understand the Green Bay Packers, but they remain perplexed. Are the Packers a place? A thing? A state of being? For now, this terrible phenomenon defies our greatest scientists and philosophers, baffling the world. However, recent developments in the field of study, focused primarily on comparative mythology, have helped us to increase our understanding of this swirling chaos. To help illuminate these finds, we welcome in Jason Hirschhorn from Acme Packing Company, our sister website, to discuss...

Wednesday Walkthroughs: Who are the Packers’ unsung heroes so far in 2018?

APC Writers weigh in on what players haven’t been getting enough attention The usual suspects have grabbed most of the headlines in the Packers’ 2-1-1 start. Aaron Rodgers did Aaron Rodgers things to beat the Bears. Aaron Jones is a star in the making. Even Clay Matthews has garnered plenty of attention, though not for the reasons anybody hoped. But plenty of other players have pitched in as well, and this week we want to recognize their contributions. Here are our unsung heroes from the first month of the season. Packers CB Jaire Alexander questionable to return vs. Bills with groin injury

After recording an early interception, the rookie was injured in the second half. In the first half of Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills, Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander intercepted Bills quarterback Josh Allen. That was Alexander’s first interception of his rookie season — or at least the first one that counted, as he had one wiped away by a roughing the passer penalty on Clay Matthews in week two. However, Alexander left the field in the second half, reportedly with a groin injury. He was officially announced as questionable to return to the game. Alexander’s...

Hottest Take of the Week: Recapping week 3 and OH LORDY JORDY

Hottest Take of the Week: Recapping week 3 and OH LORDY JORDY

Matub looks at the lingering takes from Week 3 of the NFL season. This week there was a serious lack of takes to come from what are usually credible sources. In the event of such a drought, Matub is forced to talk about takes from average sources. This week those include opinions on Randall Cobb, Kevin King, and Jordy Nelson. However, Matub begins in a predictable manner: another Clay Matthews roughing penalty. Clay was flagged again while a worse hit on Aaron Rodgers went un-flagged. Is it fair to call this the “Aaron Rodgers Rule” when Aaron doesn’t get the benefit? The competition...

Five Packers to watch against the Bills

The Bills will have to control Clay Matthews if their offense is going to have more success The Buffalo Bills face their second consecutive NFC North opponent on Sunday, traveling to Wisconsin to take on the Green Bay Packers. For the second straight week, the Bills are big underdogs. For the second straight week, the opposing team has far more household names on the roster than the Bills do. Green Bay is a talented squad that boasts one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks. However, he isn’t the only player on the roster worth watching on Sunday. Here are the players wearing navy, gold, and...

Packers president Mark Murphy tells Clay Matthews to ‘keep playing the way he’s playing’

Clay Matthews of the Green Bay Packers is not a fan of the new rules that the NFL has put in place protecting quarterbacks. He isn’t the only one, but there has not been another player impacted as much by the new rules as Matthews. In the first three weeks of the season, Matthews has […] The post Packers president Mark Murphy tells Clay Matthews to ‘keep playing the way he’s playing’ appeared first on ClutchPoints.

NFL finds itself needing to fix another rule after roughing the passer debacles

NFL finds itself needing to fix another rule after roughing the passer debacles

Roughing the passer calls are out of control. Another week led to another roughing the passer penalty on the Green Bay Packers — and Clay Matthews, specifically. The Packers lead the league in roughing the passer penalties with five and Matthews has as many (3) as any other team. As of Sunday night, the NFL is on pace to shatter last year’s record of 107 roughing the passer penalties for an entire season. Excluding the Monday night game, there have already been 29 roughing the passer penalties and that puts the league on pace for 164 for the entire year. I’m all for player safety and...

Former Giants come up with a solution to the Clay Matthews situation

Don’t want to get flagged for roughing the passer? Just be like Osi. It’s getting hard to be a defender in the NFL. Rule changes designed to promote player safety and protect quarterbacks (and therefore owners’ bank accounts) have lead to flags that frustrate the living daylights out of defenders. It all came to a head Sunday as Green Bay Packers’ star edge rusher Clay Matthews got his third roughing the passer penalty in three games for what looked to everyone who wasn’t the ref like a clean hit. #ClayMatthews got flagged for this hit. Thoughts?!? #GBvsWAS #NFL #Packers...

Clay Matthews on latest roughing call: NFL is 'getting soft'

LANDOVER, Md. — Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews does not understand why he was flagged — yet again — for roughing the passer, this time while sacking Washingtons Alex Smith on Sunday. Matthews think its an indication that the NFL is getting soft.Even Smith wasnt quite sure about the call that came late in the third quarter of Washingtons 31-17 victory. Neither were other players — or the coaches — from both teams. Matthews broke free into the backfield, grabbed Smith with both arms and took down the QB in a seemingly straightforward manner. When youre tackling a guy from...
