49ers draft picks: B.J. Daniels tweets possbilities

Niners Nation — Throughout the draft, there was a good deal of discussion about the San Francisco 49ers need for another quarterback. We all know Colin Kaepernick is the guy for the foreseeable future, but with Colt McCoy and Scott Tolzien behind him, there was always room for another young QB to bring some competition to the field. The 49ers ended up addressing that need, although the decision caught many by surprise. The 49ers used a seventh round pick to select University of South Florida quarterback B.J. Daniels. Although Daniels played quarterback at USF, he was also asked to do back-pedal and re...

This Week in Niners Nation: The Unfinished Business Edition (4/5)

Niners Nation — Is there anyone else here who assumed the 49ers would be quiet up until the draft? I understand human nature, so many of you are going to say that you knew something was coming. Well, I for one, was shocked. We made not one, but two moves that will shape the roster. First, we traded for Colt McCoy, former Browns quarterback with a season and a half of starting experience. The price was cheap. We gave up a seventh rounder, moved back a few slots from the end of the fifth to the start of the sixth round, and have to pay Mr. McCoy his peanuts. Not bad. The next day, the big news hit that ...

Colt McCoy trade: Thoughts from a Browns blogger

Niners Nation — Once the 49ers made their move to acquire Cleveland Browns quarterback Colt McCoy, I got in touch with Chris Pokorny from Dawgs by Nature, SB Nation's Browns blog. Chris was kind enough to give me a few thoughts on the brief Colt McCoy era in Cleveland. Colt McCoy's biggest asset is his mobility. He doesn't necessarily throw great on the run, but he can evade the rush and moves the chains at key points. The issue during his time in Cleveland is that he constantly checked down instead of throwing the ball down the field. There were debates as to whether that was coaching/scheme-related...

Colt McCoy talks pistol, read option

Niners Nation — Earlier this week, recently acquired 49ers quarterback Colt McCoy made the rounds of Bay Area radio. He made a stop at KNBR and talked football with Eric Byrnes and Ray Ratto, which seems like a bit of an odd couple pairing. I don't listen to a ton of radio so I don't know much about their chemistry, but on paper it's definitely random. Naturally, McCoy was asked about the pistol and the read option. You can listen to the whole thing HERE, but here are a few quotations courtesy of our friends at SportsRadioInterviews.com: On being comfortable with the pistol offense: "I ran some of th...

Redskins sign former Dolphins QB Pat White

South Florida Sun-Sentinel — The Sports Xchange EditorsNote: Updates with Grossman Redskins sign QB Pat White; re-sign Grossman Pat White is back in the NFL as a potential backup to a dual-threat quarterback, but it's not with the San Francisco 49ers. White visited the 49ers last week, but San Francisco opted to trade for veteran Colt McCoy. So White traveled cross-country and signed with the Washington Redskins. The Redskins also officially announced they have re-signed cornerback DeAngelo Hall, who was released March 11. Washington will take a lo...

49ers draft picks 2013: Post-Colt McCoy trade

Niners Nation — Earlier this week, the San Francisco 49ers worked out a deal to acquire Cleveland Browns quarterback Colt McCoy. The 49ers needed to open up some competition at the backup quarterback position, and McCoy should provide some solid competition for Scott Tolzien. This does not preclude the 49ers from drafting a quarterback or at least signing one in undrafted free agency, but McCoy and Tolzien would have the edge heading into training camp. In doing the deal, the 49ers moved around some late draft picks. The NFL.com draft board reflects the deal, so we will operate under the assumption th...

Niners Nation: Nnamdi Asomugha, Colt McCoy & Carlos Rogers' salary

Niners Nation — Wow. What a big couple of days we just witnessed. And this from a team that many, me included, thought would be done until after the draft. Once again, I am proven wrong. Once again, I learned a lesson. Always stay on your toes and expect the unexpected. There's a fair bit to cover and I'm on my way out the door for a night on the town. Short and sweet. Carlos Rogers did not get a fully guaranteed 2013 salary on April 1 as everyone had believed. I really don't understand how salaries are this confusing that nobody can accurately have an idea of what a player makes, or when these bonuse...

49ers Blog: Colt McCoy on the run: Think Alex Smith, not Colin Kaepernick

Sacramento BeeColt McCoy says he has experience running the read option out of the shotgun, and he has the numbers to back him up. In four years at the University of Texas, McCoy rushed for 1,589 yards and scored 20 rushing touchdowns, and he finished second to Sam Bradford in Heisman Trophy voting in 2008. Colt McCoy will battle Scott Tolzien to be the 49ers' backup quarterback.

Colt McCoy deal shows depth of the Browns' makeover: Terry Pluto

Plain Dealer — McCoy fans should be glad the Browns traded him to San Francisco. He joins a Super Bowl caliber team with a strong line and a power running game. At the moment, the 49ers are everything the Browns want to become.
