The Raiders receiving game has struggled for a while. Not since Randy Moss in 2005 have they fielded a 1000 yard receiver. Darrius Heyward-Bey came close in 2011 and that was the only season the past five years the Raiders' leading receiver wasn't a tight end. At wide receiver, the team has added a good looking rookie each season but has yet to find that sure thing. It was Rod Streater last season, Denarius Moore in 2011, and Jacoby Ford in 2010. The last time they went big in free agency for a receiver was 2008 when Javon Walker was paid big money and flopped. At tight end, it's going...

Just because the Colts signed free agent receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey doesn't mean they'll avoid the wide receiver position in the 2013 NFL Draft. Per Gil Brandt of NFL.com, the Colts have scheduled a private workout with Elon University's Aaron Mellette, the 6'3, 218 lb receiver who ran a 4.45 40 time at the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine. Per Brandt, Mellette worked out previously at North Carolina State’s pro day as well as the combine. The Baltimore Ravens have also shown interest in Mellette. Mellette was also the first Elon football player to ever earn an invitation to the Senior Bowl...

It became official Thursday morning when Darrius Heyward-Bey signed his contract with the Colts. If you want to see how offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton will use DHB, look no further then Stanford's game tape when Hamilton was coaching Andrew Luck. One of Luck's favorite targets while at Stanford was current Buccaneers receiver Chris Owusu. He has a similar frame and speed as DHB. I had to go back and watch Luck run some plays to Owusu under Hamilton's offense, and I watched Owusu against Duke, Arizona, and USC. I could not help but smile while watching these as Heyward-Bey should th...

Earlier today, we posted a link to the NFLPA's updated salary cap numbers for all 32 NFL teams, including the Indianapolis Colts. However, it seemed as though the Colts' deal for free agent receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey was not part of their calculation. Indianapolis was listed as having $11,427,345 at the time of our first NFLPA-salary cap article. Since then, the Colts have announced that Heyward-Bey has signed his contract with the team, which is a $2.5 million deal with $1.5 million in bonus money and $1 million in base salary: The newest member of #ColtsNation (@thedhb85) has sign...

We noted last week that, per NFL.com, the Colts had $11, 781,345 in cap space remaining and 48 contract on the books. This was before Indianapolis agreed to a reported one-year, $3 million dollar with WR Darrius Heyward-Bey and prior to punter Pat McAfee signing his franchise tender (one year, $2.9 million). Last night, the NFL Players Association released information on the salary cap numbers for each of the NFL teams. Please note that the NFLPA is the union for the players, not the NFL itself. Still, the union has access to the contract numbers for the players they represent, making...

Wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey picked the Indianapolis Colts over the Detroit Lions on Monday night. He was down to those two teams after visiting both of them last week, and he ultimately decided to sign a one-year deal with the Colts. On Tuesday, Heyward-Bey explained his decision to sign with the Colts in a conference call with reporters. From Pro Football Talk: "At the end, I just had to follow my heart and I just felt comfortable there," Heyward-Bey told reporters during an introductory conference call. "I just felt comfortable. I mean my whole life I’ve followed my heart...

It's always funny to see media latch onto a catchy lead for a sports story: Indianapolis Star: Receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey follows his heart — and Andrew Luck — to Indianapolis Herald-Bulletin: Heyward-Bey follows heart to sign with Colts PFT: DHB follows his heart to Indy The "heart" stuff stems from this quote from Darrius Heyward-Bey during his introductory conference call with media. A person that sounds an awful lot like Phil B. Wilson of IndyStar.com asked DHB, "So why the Colts, Darrius?" His response: "At the end, I just had to follow my heart and I just felt comfortab...

After Darrius Heyward-Bey was released by the Oakland Raiders back in March, one of the first media outlets he spoke to was SB Nation's own Silver and Black Pride. Levi Damien is the big cheese over there, and on March 13th he posted a very good interview with Heyward-Bey. Questions ranged from his career with the Raiders, their decision to release him, and what he thinks he can bring to a team interested in his skills. Since the team that eventually signed Heyward-Bey is the Colts, I think it's worth revisiting this interview. Here's a quick taste of it: I asked him about what he tho...

Former 49ers great Joe Montana knows a little something about the West Coast Offense. Just a tad. A smidgen. For six seasons in San Francisco, the man many believe to be the best quarterback ever (it's Peyton Manning and John Unitas for my money, but whatever) worked with wide receiver Jerry Rice, who is considered the unquestioned greatest ever at his position. Both broke all sorts of records working within Bill Walsh's meticulous short passing system. Along the way, Montana and Rice won a few Super Bowls too. Joe knows the West Coast "O." Joe knows great receivers. Joe also apparentl...

Darrius Heyward-Bey was a bust in Oakland. Yes, he was. I know some would think that 140 catches for 2,071 yards and 11 touchdowns doesn't make a player a bust, but when that player is taken 7th overall, given at least $23.5 million in guaranteed money, and never develops into a reliable pass catcher... yeah, that's a bust. Still, in fairness to Heyward-Bey, it's not like the Oakland Raiders are the model franchise of stability in the NFL. Since his rookie season, he's has to catch passes from the likes of JaMarcus Russell, Charlie Frye, Bruce Gradkowski, Jason Campbell, Kyle Boller, C...

It looks like free agent WR Darrius Heyward-Bey has finally made up his mind. After spending part of last week in Indianapolis before leaving without a contract and heading to Detroit for a scheduled visit, the fourth-year player out of Maryland has opted to sign with the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts emailed the news of the deal to media this evening, and they have updated their website. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the deal is for one-year, $3 million. While it seems clear that Heyward-Bey is not the "wopper" wide receiver Jim Irsay was trolling tweeting everyone about several ...

Scratch Darrius Heyward-Bey off the list of players who could help fill the Detroit Lions' need at wide receiver. The Lions brought him in for a visit last week in hopes of adding him to the roster, but he agreed to a one-year deal with the Indianapolis Colts on Monday. Here are the details on his deal: That's a one-year deal for DHB with Indy. Up to $3 million. $1.5 million guaranteed. — Mike Garafolo (@MikeGarafolo) April 2, 2013 Heyward-Bey visited the Colts before he stopped by the Lions' facility last week. He then took the weekend to decide on his new team, and he opted to si...

The Indianapolis Colts may or may not sign free agent wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey, and no one really knows who Jim Irsay's "wopper" free agent wide receiver is, or whether or not the Colts are still interested in a deal for his services. Even if these deals do materialize, do not be surprised if general manager Ryan Grigson drafts a wide receiver in either the first or third round of the 2013 NFL Draft. We've talked a great deal about Clemson wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, a player many expect to be available in the late first round. But, what if the Colts do a different directio...
