Jets Blog | ESPN New York The case of David Garrard gets curiouser by the day. In an interview over the weekend with Peter King of Sports Illustrated, the former Jets QB revealed there wasn't much cartilage remaining in his balky knee, creating a bone-on-bone condition. "I couldn't jog most days," Garrard said. "I could barely walk around without it hurting. And we weren't even in the strenuous part of camp yet. I figured, 'No way I can just take every fourth day off.' I went to see Rex [Ryan], and I just told him I didn't think I could do it.
New York Jets May 20, 2013Jets Blog | New York Post Former Jets quarterback David Garrard told SI.com that his knee was bone on bone and he struggled during the team’s voluntary workouts forcing him to retire last week. “I couldn't jog most days,'' he said in the report. "I could barely walk around without it hurting. And we weren't even in the strenuous part of camp yet. I figured, 'No way I can just take every fourth day off.' I went to see Rex [Ryan], and I just told him I didn't think I could do it. He didn't want to hear it. But I just told him what the doctor said -- it's only going to get worse. And that was it.'' Garrard said he thought...

May 19, 2013Jets Gab David Garrard retired from Jets on Thursday saying his knee was giving him trouble. Gang Green Nation In the wake of David Garrard's retirement due to injury issues and Mike Goodson's arrest, there have been a few peoplesuggesting doubt has been cast on John Idzik's judgment. To be sure it was less than a banner week for the two signings. To take too much away from this week, though, seems like a real stretch. In the big picture, it does not seem fair to draw conclusions about Idzik based on what has happened. Garrard and Goodson were both low risk signings. Idzik knew this at the time he inked them. They were both given small money for the reason they were both risky on some level. Th...
New York Jets May 19, 2013Jets Blog | ESPN New York With David Garrard out of the picture, the Jets are down to Mark Sanchez and rookie Geno Smith, plus Greg McElroy and Matt Simms. On paper, it's a workable depth chart for the preseason. Thing is, GM John Idzik is always looking for competition, and he hasn't slammed the door shut on adding another quarterback. Here's the problem: It won't be easy to find a Garrard-type player, a savvy veteran with the ability to start a few games, if necessary, and the desire to serve as a mentor to Smith.

Gang Green Nation With David Garrard hanging up his cleats, the Jets will have an opening on their roster. As far as I could tell, the original plan for the Jets at quarterback looked something like this. Garrard and Geno Smith would be the top two quarterbacks. Garrard would mentor Geno. Geno would either start from day one, or Garrard would be a placeholder until Geno was ready. Hopefully Mark Sanchez would play well in preseason, and some team would be crazy enough to trade for him. Once that didn't happen, Sanchez would be cut. With Garrard gone, the plan obviously will not look exactly the same, bu...
New York Jets May 17, 2013New York Post The Jets quarterbacks meeting room was less crowded yesterday with David Garrard having retired, but Mark Sanchez said the departure has no effect on him. “Nothing’s changed,” Sanchez said. “My mindset’s the same. New York Jets May 17, 2013Florida Times-Union When you look back on David Garrard’s football career of wild extremes, the defining characteristic of all should be this: he overcame hurdles about as well as anyone who ever put on a Jaguars’ uniform. Yes, father time ultimately dragged the 35-year-old quarterback off the field. Injuries to his back and left knee the past three years kept him sidelined, forcing him to call it quits Wednesday from his last job with the New York Jets. read more
Jacksonville Jaguars May 16, 2013The Huddle New York Jets starting QB Mark Sanchez should have an edge on the starting quarterback job over rookie QB Geno Smith after David Garrard's decision to retire, according to former head coach Herm Edwards. 'This is now Mark Sanchez's job to lose,' Edwards said. Huddle Up: The once-booming Jets QB circus is now down to a couple rings with the release of Tim Tebow and Garrard's decision to retire on Wednesday. Sure the incumbent Sanchez is the odds-on favorite to beat out the second-round pick Smith, but even if he does, it's only going to take a couple of Sanchez turnovers in MetLife Stadium bef...

One Jet at a Time USA Today Sports came out with a piece today, saying that the Jets are making a push to keep Garrard in the building, even if it doesn't involve actually being on the field. David Garrard is strongly considering returning to the New York Jets in training camp this summer - as a quarterback coaching intern, saying emphatically that his degenerative left knee, not the drafting of Geno Smith, forced him Wednesday to tell general manager John Idzik, coach Rex Ryan and offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg that he was retiring. Garrard went on to say that Geno is the "guy of the future,"...
New York Jets May 16, 2013Newark Star-Ledger Following the retirement of David Garrard, something Mark Sanchez called "abrupt" and said he didn’t see coming, Geno Smith and Sanchez appear to be the frontrunners remaining to win the starting job.
New York Jets May 16, 2013Newsday The news of David Garrard's impending retirement won't change Mark Sanchez's approach as he competes for the Jets' starting quarterback job.
New York Jets May 16, 2013Jets Blog | New York Post APMark Sanchez talks with the media on Thursday. Mark Sanchez has one less quarterback to compete with for the Jets' starting job now that David Garrard has walked away, but Sanchez said his approach remains the same. "Nothing's changed," Sanchez said Thursday. "My mindset's the same. Just stay focused, master this offense, improve on my fundamentals and be as accurate as possible, take care of the football and lead this team." Sanchez said Garrard's decision to retire was "a little bit abrupt" and he did not see it coming. The fifth-year quarterback is trying to beat out rookie Geno Sm...
