Jets sign WR Obomanu; Garrard officially retires

Jets Blog | New York Post — The Jets signed wide receiver Ben Obomanu on Thursday. Obomanu was a seventh-round pick of the Seahawks in 2006 and has caught 87 passes for 1,209 yards and seven touchdowns in his career. Jets general manager John Idzik has familiarity with Obomanu from his time in the Seahawks' front office. The Jets are woefully thin at wide receiver right now with their top two receivers sidelined by injury. Santonio Holmes is returning from foot surgery and unable to practice. Stephen Hill has missed time with a knee injury. The team also announced quarterback David Garrard officially retired.

In an interview over the weekend with Peter King of Sports Illustrated, the former Jets QB revealed there wasn't much cartilage remaining in his balky knee, creating a bone-on-bone condition. "I couldn't jog most days," Garrard said. "I could barely walk around without it hurting. And we weren't even in the strenuous part of camp yet. I figured, 'No way I can just take every fourth day off.' I went to see Rex [Ryan], and I just told him I didn't think I could do it.

Jets Blog | New York Post — The Jets quarterback competition got a new contestant Monday. The team signed veteran David Garrard after visiting with him two weeks ago. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The New Jersey native has not played a regular season game since 2010. Garrard has been sidelined with back and knee injuries.
