Broncos 3rd and long: an ugly win is still a win

Broncos 3rd and long: an ugly win is still a win

The Denver Broncos were perfect on third and long against the Oakland Raiders. So Joe Woods had our defensive backs play way off of the Raider receivers on Sunday. Derek Carr took advantage of that and carved up the Frequent Flyer Zone to the tune of an NFL record 29 completions on 32 attempts (90.6%). The Raiders stuck to their game plan and, at least in the first half, they were able to dictate to our defense. They wanted to run the ball on first down to stay “on schedule”. They were able to do that, for the most part, gaining 49 yards on 15 first down carries (3.3 ypc). While that...

Caption This! Week 3 vs. Oakland Raiders

Jon Gruden, Derek Carr, and the Oakland Raiders visit Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday. What is it that they see over there? “Caption This!” is a game where we try to be funny. Give the funniest caption. That’s it. If you like someone else’s caption, be so kind as to give them a REC. (If you don’t know how to REC something, please ask!) Most REC’s win. (Please remember site rules. Innuendo = good; profanity = bad.) Derek Carr and Jon Gruden of the Oakland Raiders see something off in the distance, but what? Popcorn vendor turf war? Perhaps they saw ANOTHER play that Khalil Mack has...

Raiders week two report card vs Broncos

Raiders week two report card vs Broncos

Often times in sports it’s not how you start but how you finish. If any of you have spent time in a football locker room you will hear things from the coach like, “We need to compete for 60 minutes,” or “Let’s finish.” Yesterday on the road in Denver, the Oakland Raiders had the opportunity to close the door on a Broncos comeback attempt but were unsuccessful. The Raiders now fall to 0-2 and find themselves in the basement of the AFC West division. Let’s look at the Raiders report card for week two. Aerial Attack: A What a difference a week makes for Derek Carr. After...

Raiders vs. Broncos: 4 Winners, 4 Losers

Raiders vs. Broncos: 4 Winners, 4 Losers

While it sucks that the Raiders didn’t win this game, it’s difficult for even the best teams to come away with a victory in Denver, where the Broncos enjoy an overwhelming home field advantage. The Raiders put up a valiant effort today, and there are a lot of positives to take from this rather than the myriad questions and fears we had after the Rams game. So, who crushed it today, and who should be flushed? WINNERS 1) Derek Carr If there’s one question Raider fans had after the Rams game, it was “What’s wrong with Derek Carr?” and today Carr answered that question with an...

Derek Carr answered some major questions, but more remain

Derek Carr answered some major questions, but more remain

Week one for the Raiders, Derek Carr caught a lot of heat. Both from the fans and his coaches. They wanted him to stand tall in the pocket, be aggressive, look downfield, and find his number one receiver. He did many of those things. But more is needed. That’s not to say Carr lit it up. Scoring 19 points in a loss isn’t exactly a sign of an elite day. But what Carr did was check off many of the boxes he was asked to in what had to be a frustrating week after such a miserable second half against the Rams in the opener. The most pressing concern was Carr panicking in the pocket. After...

Raiders vs. Broncos second half open thread

Raiders vs. Broncos second half open thread

Just like last week, the Raiders hold the lead at halftime, and are leading the Broncos 12-0. The Raiders allowed only two Broncos’ first downs, neither of which came in the first quarter. Although Oakland hasn’t scored in bunches, this game has been abject domination by the Raiders thus far. Derek Carr has shown none of the jitters that paralyzed him against the Rams, and has stood in the pocket and delivered confident passes. The short passing game has been working with WR screens and Jared Cook over the middle. Carr has passed for 158 yards on 18-19 passing, which is positively...

Five keys to the Raiders breaking the Broncos

Five keys to the Raiders breaking the Broncos

Victory eluded the Oakland Raiders against the Los Angeles Rams in the season opener. Meanwhile, the Denver Broncos won a close game against the Seattle Seahawks. A win over the Broncos on the road would do wonders to quiet some of the noise surrounding the Raiders. Here are the keys to doing that. Derek Carr must re-master himself — When under pressure Carr becomes a shell of the quarterback he can be. He must quiet the footsteps and noise from ghosts in his mind and allow the play to develop. Pressure Case Keenum — The Broncos went out and got a journeyman at the quarterback...

Oakland Raiders: Derek Carr seeing the worm turning very quickly on him

Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr is facing a lot of heat for recent sub-par play, but history suggests that better days may well be ahead.
