The Bear's Den EXTRA EDITION: August 12, 2016

Your Double-Dipping Den Of The Day brings you a ton of news and links about our "less than entirely successful" preseason opener against Denver. Ken's Note: Jack Silverstein published an outstanding article about Devin Hester's amazing 2006 rookie year, and with all the preseason game action you may have overlooked it. Trust me, it's worth a read, so if you haven't checked it out, click on the link here or hit it from the front page and give it a look. Really great stuff! Silverstein:  salute to Devin Hester's magical rookie year - Windy City Gridiron - Today's look back on the 2006...

Which one Chicago Bears’ player will you be watching tonight?

The Chicago Bears open their preseason schedule tonight as they host the Denver Broncos at 7pm Central time. Head coach John Fox says the starters will play about a quarter before the avalanche of backups begin. And I’m good with that. I’m the kind of football fan that enjoys preseason games, because I get to see players fighting for their NFL careers. I love the bottom of the depth chart battles that take place late in games. Seeing if that UDFA can beat out the 8 year vet trying to hold on. Watching if the young offensive tackle can add value by kicking inside to guard. Competition...

Chiefs’ Dave Toub says Tyreek Hill is the fastest player he’s ever coached

Shortly after the Kansas City Chiefs drafted Tyreek Hill, special teams coach Dave Toub came out and said he was Devin Hester-ish. Toub later slowed that down and said it’s not fair to compare the two. So guess what he did today? Dave Toub on Tyreek Hill: "Speed wise he's the fastest player I've ever coached and I coached Devin Hester." #Chiefs #ChiefsKingdom— Andrew Carter (@Andrew__Carter) August 8, 2016 The hype is real. Very real. But will it translate to actual games? That’s the part I’m not sure about. I’ve seen too many players star in training camp only to see them...

Lions' Darius Slay: I'm faster than Devin Hester ever was

Lions' Darius Slay: I'm faster than Devin Hester ever was

The Detroit Lions cornerback graded out very well in Madden this year, earning a 90 in the ratings. But even that wasn't good enough for Slay.

Former Falcons return man Devin Hester drawing strong interest from other teams, may not play for another two months

Fact: Devin Hester prefers a buttery caviar Former Atlanta Falcons returner extraordinaire Devin Hester will be missed at Flowery Branch. His first year in Atlanta was incredible: he broke Deion Sanders' return TD record, provided veteran leadership, and played solidly at receiver. That all changed in 2015 and earlier this week, the Falcons officially cut the future Hall of Famer. After the Falcons cut Hester on Wednesday, lots of you took pity on him, believing this was a sad way for arguably the best returner in NFL history to conclude his amazing career. And now it appears he may not...

Don't worry Atlanta Falcons fans, Julio Jones' tweak is "nothing to worry about"

Fact: Julio Jones is deathly afraid of palm trees Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones is an essential part of the offense. Without him it becomes decidedly harder for Matt Ryan and company to move the ball. And that's why Falcoholics everywhere nearly messed their pants when Jones left practice on the first day of training camp after a "tweak" of some sort. For what it's worth, following his "tweak," we now know that Jones was cleared by the training staff. He could've gone back on the field, but out of an abundance of caution, they held him out. He's back now and sounded pretty...

With Devin Hester cut, who will the Falcons try at returner?

It’s time for the young guys to step up With the not-so-surprising cut of Devin Hester today, the Falcons created an expected competition in camp for punt and kick return duties. Hester was phenomenal for the team in 2014, but missed most of 2015 with injury. Given his age and the risk of not being fully healthy, it made sense to move on. So, who will compete for the open returner positions in camp? Quinn said the Falcons are looking at Weems, Hardy, Fuller, Williams, Coleman to fill the kick/punt returner duties— Andrew Hirsh (@andrewhirsh) July 26, 2016 Punt Returner Coach Quinn...

Should the Ravens take a chance on Roddy White or Devin Hester?

On the morning of July 26, 2016, the Atlanta Falcons released Devin Hester. Hester is the second receiver the Falcons have released this offseason. Back in March, the Falcons let go of Roddy White who had been with the team for 11 years. Both Hester and White are players who were formerly stars but both are getting up there in terms of age. Yet, both Hester and White aren't seeing their release as the end of the road. They have both said that they want don't want to retire and that they want to play for a contender. So should the Ravens try to bring either to Baltimore? The Ravens have a...
