Jaguars OTAs: Geno Hayes has to win his starting job

Big Cat Country — The Jacksonville Jaguars signed veteran linebacker Geno Hayes in the 2013 NFL offseason, leading many to assume that Hayes would step into a starting role with the team. As the head coach and general manager have preached competition at every position, starting isn't a guarantee for Hayes. "The outside linebacker spot Hayes is working at is a completely wide-open derby entering training camp," writes Ryan O'Halloran of The Florida Times-Union. The fact that some of the positions on defense are wide open, in terms of who could start, shouldn't be a big surprise going forward. Even thoug...

LB Geno Hayes thankful for chance to play

Florida Times-Union — As six linebackers came off the board in the second round of last month’s NFL Draft, some earlier than expected, it became apparent Geno Hayes would not face additional competition to win a starting position on the Jaguars’ defense. Not that Hayes was glued to his television watching the proceedings. “I’m not one of those guys who are big on paying attention to what they bring in,” he said. “I’ve been around for a while and it’s more about competing with myself.” Competing with himself … and several others. read more

Right tackle, safety market dry

Florida Times-Union — Two weeks into free agency and the Jaguars have stood pat with their plan of not being active participants. They’ve signed cornerback Alan Ball (Houston), linebacker Geno Hayes (Chicago), defensive tackle Roy Miller (Tampa Bay) and running back Justin Forsett (Houston). They’ve re-signed center Brad Meester, receiver Jordan Shipley and cornerback Antwan Molden. Next up is the start of the off-season program on Tuesday (more on that in the Times-Union as the week goes along). The Jaguars are likely to convene for the first time without a starting right tackle or safety. read more

The Next Step for Brian Urlacher and the Bears

Windy City Gridiron — The Bears are kind of at a crossroads with Brian Urlacher, as the signings of Nick Roach to Oakland and Geno Hayes to Jacksonville pushed the Bears' linebacking woes further into the limelight, as does interest from the Minnesota Vikings in the linebacker. Not to mention Urlacher's injured knee from last offseason as well as the hamstring injury he suffered last season. But re-signing Urlacher goes beyond merely signing the linebacker. Urlacher has more leverage than the Bears at this point - the Bears have a drastic need, Urlacher has legitimate interest from another team, and there a...

Jaguars were bargain shoppers in signing linebacker Geno Hayes

Florida Times-Union — The Jaguars showed they will be bargain shoppers in free agency when they signed linebacker Geno Hayes. Hayes got just $125,000 to sign with an $850,000 base salary this year and a $975,000 base in 2014 with $650,000 in playtime incentives according to ESPN. Linebacker Geno Hayes signs with Jaguars, just part of team's moves

Florida Times-Union — Nearly 24 hours after the start of the NFL free agent frenzy, the Jaguars got involved by signing outside linebacker Geno Hayes to a two-year contract worth a reported $2 million. But it wasn’t the only Jaguars-related news Wednesday: - Receiver Laurent Robinson, signed to a five-year, $32.5 million contract last March 15 but whose season was derailed by four concussions, was released. read more

Geno Hayes signed by Jaguars

Big Cat Country — The Jacksonville Jaguars have signed free agent linebacker Geno Hayes, according to a report by John Oehser. Hayes spent four seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, including one season with Gus Bradley as his linebackers coach, before joining the Chicago Bears in 2012. From Bucs Nation Geno Hayes is small, fast and ridiculously inconsistent. He will have plays and sometimes games where he looks great knifing into the backfield, but more often than not he'll run himself out of the play or get walled off. One upside: he's okay in pass coverage. "It's a great feeling, to get to wor...

Frogs forging new identity on recruiting trail

Chicago Bears Blog | ESPN Chicago — FORT WORTH, Texas -- Thirteen years ago, Gary Patterson heard all kinds of criticism about his program while on recruiting trail in the thick of Big 12 country. It was his first year as head coach of TCU and the Horned Frogs' first season in Conference USA. But with the Frogs now in the Big 12 and poised for a promising 2013 season, recruits in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex are running out of reasons not to sign close to home at TCU. The program turned heads in December when it swiped longtime Texas recruit Kyle Hicks, who had been committed to the Longhorns since February of 2012.
