Former Lions RB Jahvid Best outed in first round of 100M event at Rio Olympics

Unfortunately, we won’t see Jahvid Best with an olympic medal around his neck. When Detroit Lions running back Jahvid Best saw his football career cut short by a string of concussions, he was presumed to be out of the athletic spotlight for the rest of his life. Fortunately, Best found another way to use his physical gifts. Since leaving football in 2012, Best has slowly been building a career in track and field. That success has culminated in an appearance in the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics. Best qualified to enter the olympics through his father’s home country of Saint Lucia. He became...

Let’s address the Jake Rudock elephant in the room

Let’s acknowledge Jake Rudock’s promising start in the NFL, but pump the brakes on any fantasies of the Detroit Lions rookie. Before I jump into any of this, let me say upfront: Jake Rudock had a good NFL debut. He finished the game 8-11 for 72 yards and a touchdown. He had the highest passer rating of all three Detroit Lions quarterbacks. He essentially led the Lions on three drives, scoring on two of them. For a sixth-round rookie, that’s pretty amazing regardless of the competition he’s facing. Now that I’ve buttered up the Rudock and Michigan fans (full disclosure: I’m a...

Coxswain's rallying cry powers US women's 8 to another gold

The U.S. boat was in third place halfway through the race when coxswain Katelin Snyder shouted the magic words: "This is the U.S. women's eight!" Yes, it was. The crew responded and did what it always does: It won. The U.S. women's eight is a seemingly invincible boat, with 11 consecutive world and Olympic titles since 2006. Only two crew members remained from the boat that won gold in the London Olympics, and only one from Beijing four years earlier. It didn't matter. Canada led the race after the first 1,000 meters of the 2,000 meter race, with the U.S. in third.

Positional grades for Lions vs. Steelers: Offensive line struggles, defensive line with a strong showing

The first preseason game is in the books for the Lions; here’s a look at how the team performed at each position and a grade to go with it. While I was watching the pre-game coverage before the Lions and Steelers kicked off on Friday night, Dan Miller of Fox 2 asked Herman Moore what his advice would be to the young players trying to make the team as they headed into the first game of the preseason. The former Lions wide receiver had this to say: You have to go out and I think you have to work on the grading side. What people don’t understand is that players get graded, coaches get...

Usain Bolt, Justin Gatlin win 100m heats

Usain Bolt raced for the first at the 2016 Olympics and won his opening round 100m heat in 10.07 seconds. Bolt is attempting to become the first man to win three consecutive Olympic 100m gold medals. "It wasn't the best start, it felt kind of sluggish," said Bolt, who was running just after noon on Saturday in Rio, to the Associated Press. "I'm not used to running this early in the morning in any championships. Justin Gatlin clocked 10.01 seconds, the fastest time of the first round, to win his heat by .19 seconds.

Lions Saturday open thread: Has your view on the Lions changed after Friday?

Today's question of the day: After the Lions' preseason game, has your opinion on the team changed? The Detroit Lions won their preseason opener pretty handily on Friday, sending the Pittsburgh Steelers to their locker room as 30-17 losers. Though the Lions certainly had troubles along the way, they carried the play for the entire game and ended up outgaining the Steelers by nearly 200 yards. So here is today's Question of the Day: After the Lions' preseason opener, has your opinion on the 2016 Lions changed? My answer: No. While I'm glad the Lions managed to play a solid game all around,...

Lions vs. Steelers: What just happened?

Thoughts and analysis on the Lions first game of the year. Football is finally back. Sort of. After a grueling summer of only baseball to enjoy after basketball went away, we can finally say that there is some variation of Lions football on our television screens. In true preseason form, this was the kind of game that put some fans to sleep early on in the contest. If you were hoping to have some questions answered about the first team offense or defense, you probably didn't get any answers from Friday nights game. We did, however, get to see a lot of other players that are fighting for...
