Jameis Winston’s third season could look a lot like Andrew Luck’s

Jameis Winston’s third season could look a lot like Andrew Luck’s

Luck got to the conference championship game that season. Comparing Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota used to be the hot thing to do, but for some reason I haven’t seen that many direct comparisons the past year. Mike Tanier of Bleacher Report thought it was a good idea to frame his analysis that way, pitting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback against the Tennessee Titans’ signal caller. The final conclusion is that Mariota is likely to do better this year, with less production than Jameis Winston overall. But Tanier refuses to make any statements on who is actually the better...

Cameron Brate spent a ridiculous amount of time in the slot

Cameron Brate spent a ridiculous amount of time in the slot

The Bucs love splitting him away from the line. Cameron Brate had a bit of a breakout year last season, acting as Jameis Winston’s main safety blanket and catching 57 passes for 660 yards and eight touchdowns. Brate really improved rapidly, and was especially productive for a player whose blocking is so-so. Intriguingly, the Bucs seem to not have asked him to block a lot. According to Football Outsiders, he spent 72% of his time either split out wide, or in the slot, and not in line. That percentage ranks sixth among NFL tight ends. Of course, being split away from the offensive line...

Jersey-buyers know O.J. Howard’s value better than NFL executives

Howard wasn’t a top-ten pick, but he’s in the top ten in jersey sales. Did you know that when you run a blog about a sports team you get a ton of marketing e-mails? It’s eh.....boring. Sometimes they’re fun, though, like when Dick’s Sporting Goods mails you their jersey rankings to tell you that your first-round pick holds the #9 top-selling jersey among rookies. Their jersey selling stats are here, and they’re kind of interesting. Jameis Winston is ranked 38th right now—not great, not terrible either. Kind of eh-eh. Mike Evans 80th, which is only three spots ahead of O.J....

Jameis Winston is really young, so how long will he play?

Jameis Winston is really young, so how long will he play?

Winston will be 23 this season, and has already thrown 50 touchdowns. Jameis Winston is really young. We tend to forget that, but he was just 22 last season. He’ll be 23 this year. He entered the NFL at 21. And he’s thrown more touchdowns before age 23 than any NFL quarterback, ever (via JoeBucsFan). Four quarterbacks did manage to throw more touchdowns than Winston in their first two seasons, though: Dan Marino (68!), Derek Carr, Peyton Manning and Russell Wilson. It's still kind of jarring to realize that Jameis Winston has thrown 50 TDs in the NFL already and doesn't turn *23*...

Four bold predcitions for the 2017 NFL season

Four bold predcitions for the 2017 NFL season

The top two picks from the 2015 NFL draft will both lead their team to the playoffs The top two picks in the 2015 NFL draft were both quarterbacks, and both will take their teams to the playoffs for the first time in their respective careers in the 2017 season. Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota were the top two picks respectively in that draft. Winston had strong season in 2016, and I believe he will be even better in 2017. One of the biggest reasons why the Buccaneers will improve this year was their excellent draft. With its first two picks, Tampa Bay selected O.J. Howard, the best tight...

Jameis Winston will take the Buccaneers where they need to go

Jameis Winston will take the Buccaneers where they need to go

Winston’s new supporting cast will help him get there. Jameis Winston will determine how far the Tampa Bay Buccaneers go. It’s a simple truth applicable to basically any NFL team that doesn’t have an overwhelming amount of talent at every other position: you win or lose mostly by virtue of the quality of your quarterback’s play. That’s just how the NFL works. So far, the Bucs have gone pretty much where Winston goes: solid, mid-table finishes with the potential for much more. A little year-on-year growth and a lot of perspective for the future. So much perspective that SB...

Jameis Winston is a much better choice than Andrew Luck to start a franchise with

Luck hasn’t lived up to the hype, while Winston is just getting started. Here’s an interesting question: if you could pick any players to start a franchise with, who would you choose? I feel like most Tampa Bay Buccaneers would pick Jameis Winston, and rightly so: he’s arguably the most promising young quarterback in the league. He’s just 23 and hasn’t nearly reached his ceiling. So why is it that both SB Nation’s Adam Stites and Pro Football Focus’ Daniel Kelley choose Andrew Luck well before Winston comes off the board? Fun fact: Andrew Luck will be 28 years old this...

Jameis Winston’s ceiling is through the roof

Jameis Winston’s ceiling is through the roof

The Bucs star was called “transcendent” by one analyst. Jameis Winston is a potential top ten quarterback—ever. The expectation for this season should be for him to enter the top ten of current NFL quarterbacks in terms of production, but in the long-term he wants to be the best to ever play the game—a bit overambitious, perhaps, but Winston has the talent to get awfully close. That’s what NFL.com’s Bucky Brooks sees on film too, saying that the Bucs quarterback is a “transcendent talent” who should get a “gold star” for his play with somewhat limited weapons (via Bucs...

Jameis Winston’s interceptions tell a dangerous story

Jameis Winston’s interceptions tell a dangerous story

Can Winston learn to be a little more careful? In his sophomore year in the NFL, Jameis Winston has again thrown for over 4,000 yards as well as over 20 touchdowns. In his second year, he has also thrown over 14 interceptions, 18 interceptions for this past season. Those 18 interceptions have him throwing the second most last season. Folks, we have a swashbuckling gunslinger heading our attack! Let us inspect those 18 interceptions. 1st down and 10+ yards: 4 events 2nd down and 10+ yards: 3 events 3rd down and 10+ yards: 4 events There seems to be no pattern attached to...

The Buccaneers have the best receiving corps in the NFL

The Buccaneers have the best receiving corps in the NFL

Jameis Winston can be happy with his targets. When’s the last time the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were genuinely in the conversation for having the best receiving corps in the NFL? I can’t remember any time, realistically, before this season—and yet, that’s exactly where we are now. ESPN had a few folks on to argue about the best receiving corps in the NFL, with the New York Giants offered up as the main candidates: with Odell Beckham Jr., Brandon Marshall and Sterling Shepard, they have a decent argument. And yet, everyone agreed that really, the Bucs have the better group—if we...

Watch Jameis Winston play bubble soccer, praise Gerald McCoy

Apparently McCoy has never said a curse word in his entire life. Jameis Winston was out doing some community work today at a prep school leadership conference in Tampa, and Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times was there to film him as he played some bubble soccer. Cool cool cool. Jameis Winston wants to be the greatest of all time

Jameis Winston wants to be the greatest of all time

The Bucs quarterback has lofty goals for himself. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers drafted Jameis Winston first overall in 2015 because they think he can be great. So far, Winston’s on a trajectory to get there, but he hasn’t made it yet—his first two years have been good, but not quite at the level where he and the Bucs eventually want him to be. Winston’s well aware of that and talking to NFL Network yesterday, he set some really high standards for himself. “Ultimately I want to be the greatest of all time, one day. That has to be your goal. People always say ‘that’ll never...

Can the Bucs’ secret superstar repeat his performance?

Can the Bucs’ secret superstar repeat his performance?

Cameron Brate has a lot more competition this season. Cameron Brate has improved every season since entering the NFL as an undrafted free agent for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2014. That culminated in an impressive 57 catches for 660 yards and eight touchdowns in 15 games last season. Brate was a consistently productive receiver for Jameis Winston, a safety blanket, more or less. And that performance led Pro Football Focus to name him the Bucs’ Secret Superstar of 2017. Brate burst into the scene in 2016, more than doubling his snap count from the year before and dramatically eclipsing...

Jameis Winston’s working hard on his days off

The Bucs quarterback is performing some pullups in this Instagram video. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a few weeks off before the start of training camp, but that doesn’t mean they all stop working. Injured players have to keep working on their rehab, while others work on their fitness. Like Jameis Winston, who’s working with some dude called Tim Grover of Attack Athletics who really likes using the big-name athletes he works with to promote his business. The next time anyone questions your athleticism, @jaboowins3, show them this. Athletic hands, athletic feet...athletic mind....
