Lions notes: James Ihedigbo, Glover Quin, more

Lions notes looks at James Ihedigbo, Glover Quin and much more. James Ihedigbo may have only signed with the Detroit Lions last week, but he's already started training with fellow safety Glover Quin. Quin had surgery at the end of January to repair a torn ligament in his ankle, according to Josh Katzenstein. Quin apparently originally suffered the injury in Week 4 of last season and had to play through it the rest of the year. Ihedigbo and his wife had a baby girl last Thursday, so it's been an eventful last week for them. Aside from the Lions, Ihedigbo received interest from the...

Is James Ihedigbo a pass coverage liability?

James Ihedigbo's pass coverage ranking from Pro Football Focus is worrying, but is it really as bad as it seems? Let's be honest with each other: none of us know that much about James Ihedigbo. We know he led the Baltimore Ravens in solo tackles last year and was second in total tackles. We grasp his Pro Football Focus rankings and suck all of the marrow out, drawing overarching conclusions based on arbitrary numbers that we don't completely understand. He's a great run-stopper and a terrible coverage guy. That's what we "know" without seeing a second of film. Well, I'm here to put an end...

Ihedigbo's contract with Lions far from exorbitant

After seeing the details of James Ihedigbo's new contract with the Detroit Lions, Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh's declaration earlier this week that his team passed on re-signing the safety for salary cap reasons falls flat. To replace Ihedigbo, the Ravens signed Darian Stewart to a one-year, $1.3-million deal last week. Ihedigbo's cap number this year is slightly lower than Stewart's - $1.125 million versus $1.3 million - while the actual money he'll make this year is a tick higher ($1.5 million).

James Ihedigbo to play strong safety for Lions

After adding James Ihedigbo, the Detroit Lions shared their plans for the safety position in 2014. When the Detroit Lions first started pursuing James Ihedigbo after free agency opened a couple weeks ago, speculation suggested that they wanted him to be their strong safety. Under their new defensive coaching staff, the Lions are going back to strong and free designations at safety, and simply based on his strengths as a player, strong safety makes much more sense than free safety for Ihedigbo. The Lions finally landed Ihedigbo on Monday night, and head coach Jim Caldwell confirmed on...

Hard-hitting safety James Ihedigbo could prove to be the perfect fit for the Detroit Lions

The Detroit Lions still are expected to select a safety in the NFL draft, even after coming to terms with James Ihedigbo on a two-year deal Monday night. And in that sense, Ihedigbo, 30, seems like an ideal fit for Detroit.
