Ravens update depth chart

Ravens Central | Baltimore Sun — The Ravens have updated their depth chart, but there's nothing really earth-shattering in terms of news. Even with the addition of T.J. Houshmandzadeh, he and Donte' Stallworth are behind starters Anquan Boldin and Derrick Mason, who have more familiarity with the playbook. Jared Gaither is listed as the starting right tackle and Tony Moll is his backup, but with Gaither still plagued by a thoracic disk injury, don't be surprised if Oniel Cousins is inserted at right tackle in the team's season opener against the New York Jets next Monday night -- provided that Cousins demonstrates that he i...

No surprises at Ravens practice

Ravens Central | Baltimore Sun — Only three players were missing from the portion of Wednesday morning's practice open to the media, and none of them would qualify as shocking. Wide receiver Donte' Stallworth is out until at least next month after undergoing surgery on his broken foot, rookie nose tackle Terrence Cody has said arthroscopic surgery on the torn meniscus in his left knee will keep him on the sideline until at least Week 2, and offensive tackle Jared Gaither has been all but ruled out because of his thoracic disk injury. There is a new player who wore a No. 38 jersey as a member of the defense. However, the tea...

Kruger returns to practice

Ravens Central | Baltimore Sun — After missing practice on Friday, defensive end Paul Kruger was back on Monday. Coach John Harbaugh had said on Friday that Kruger sat out because of an injured shoulder. Offensive tackle Jared Gaither (thoracic disk in back), wide receiver Donte’ Stallworth (broken foot) and rookie nose tackle Terrence Cody (torn meniscus in left knee) did not practice. Cornerback Cary Williams was also absent as he is serving a two-game suspension for violating the league’s personal-conduct policy. Don’t want to make too much of this, but at one point, the first offensive line lined up with Marshal Yanda a...

McGahee, Kruger missing from practice

Ravens Central | Baltimore Sun — Running back Willis McGahee and defensive end Paul Kruger were curiously missing from the portion of Friday morning’s practice open to the meda at the Ravens’ training facility in Owings Mills. That may not mean much as the pair has yet to sit out practice, but their absence was somewhat surprising. Wide receiver Mark Clayton, who is dealing with a concussion, walked onto the practice field without a helmet. Offensive tackles Jared Gaither (thoracic disk in back) and Stefan Rodgers (right ankle), defensive tackles Kelly Talavou (left calf) and rookie Terrence Cody (left knee surgery) and g...

Newsome on Ravens' trade chances

Baltimore Sun — MIke Preston: Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome would not mention specifics but he suggested the Ravens are interested at making upgrades through trades at all positions. The Ravens could use more depth on the offensive line at the guard and tackle positions. I still don't think Oniel Cousins or Tony Moll are the answer at right offensive tackle even though Moll has been solid filling in for the injured Jared Gaither.

Newsome interested in trading to upgrade entire team

Ravens Central | Baltimore Sun — After speaking to me Monday, Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome made it perfectly clear that the Ravens were interested in trading to upgrade their entire football team, not just at cornerback. While Newsome wouldn't go into specifics, the Ravens could use more depth on the offensive line at the guard and tackle positions. I still don't think Oniel Cousins or Tony Moll are the answer at right offensive tackle even though Moll has been solid filling in for the injured Jared Gaither. The best solution is still to move right guard Marshal Yanda to right tackle and Chris Chester at right guard u...

Cousins' availability for Thursday still unclear

Ravens Central | Baltimore Sun — Oniel Cousins said symptoms stemming from the concussion he sustained on Aug. 18 are subsiding, but the offensive tackle still isn’t sure whether he will be available for the team’s preseason finale against the St. Louis Rams Thursday night. “I don’t know,” Cousins said after Monday morning’s practice. “I’ve just got to play it out and see how it feels. Like I said, I’m getting better every day.” Cousins made an appearance at practice, dressed in his jersey, helmet and shorts. But he was limited to a few individual drills. Without Cousins and Jared Gaither (thoracic disk in back), Tony Moll...

Trouble at right tackle

Ravens Central | Baltimore Sun — Although Joe Flacco was able to get the ball away quickly in the first quarter, he was sacked twice by the Giants. The first was by Justin Tuck, who came through right tackle Tony Moll and flung Flacco to the turf. The second sack was by Rocky Bernard when Flacco stepped up in the pocket to elude pressure coming from the outside. Moll had his hands full in the first quarter. With Jared Gaither (back) and Oniel Cousins (concussion) out, he is the right tackle of the moment. But his difficult start reopens the question of whether the Ravens will have to move Marshal Yanda from guard to tackle....

  • Jets have healthy respect for Ravens offense Ravens Central | Baltimore Sun For all of the chatter surrounding the Ravens’ season opener against the New York Jets on Monday night, there seems to be several threads of mutual respect between the teams. That was evident during Thursday’s conference calls with Jets coach Rex Ryan and linebacker Bart Scott, a pair of former Ravens who were effusive in their praise of their opponent’s offensive makeover. Asked to compare the current Ravens offense to the ones he practiced against as a member of the defense, Scott replied, “It was a one-dimensional offense. They really didn’t have an identity other than running the ball. N...
  • Projecting AFC North Ravens Central | Baltimore Sun The Sun’s Jamison Hensley finishes up his predictions on how each of the NFL divisions will unfold this season. As always, this is not an exact science. AFC North 1. Ravens: This has the makings of being the most complete team in Ravens history. Joe Flacco is primed to have a Pro Bowl season with the talent around him. The defense should remain solid despite losing safety Ed Reed for six games and cornerback Domonique Foxworth for the season. Failing to win the division would be a major disappointment.

But are Joe Flacco and the 2010 Ravens better than their championship-winning predecessors? Well, that might be a different story.

They forgot about Joe Cool.
