49ers may have a CB question with Mahomes next up

As quarterback Matthew Stafford was furiously trying to rally the Lions from a 17-point, fourth-quarter deficit Sunday, the 49ers made a defensive change in hopes of stopping his momentum. They inserted cornerback Jimmie Ward for starter Ahkello Witherspoon, who played just 12 of the final 15 defensive snaps. "That was crunch time," head coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday after a 30-27 win over Detroit. "Going against a real good offense there. Stafford’s got a great chance to get back in the game with how good he is. And just watching the game right there, we felt getting Jimmie in helped us.

49ers secondary has two question marks heading into Week 2 vs. Chiefs

49ers secondary has two question marks heading into Week 2 vs. Chiefs

This is not ideal timing. The San Francisco 49ers travel to face the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 3, and their secondary has question marks at precisely the wrong time. Jaquiski Tartt is day-to-day after suffering a shoulder stinger on Sunday, and head coach Kyle Shanahan would not yet commit to who would start at cornerback opposite Richard Sherman. The team will know more about Tartt later this week, but Shanahan said on Monday that if he can’t go, Jimmie Ward could end up as an option next to Adrian Colbert. Jimmie Ward is a backup at all of the defensive back positions. Antone Exum came...

Snap count reflects Witherspoon benching, RB committee, Solomon Thomas questions

The San Francisco 49ers secured their first victory in Week 2, but it was an ugly one that saw Ahkello Witherspoon benched late in the game. We’ve got a full rundown of the snap count below, or you can check out the gamebook PDF. Witherspoon had his worst game as a pro, giving up two scores and getting overwhelmed all day long. Jimmie Ward eventually replaced him, and did not do much in his own right. Kyle Shanahan is meeting with the media on Monday, so we’ll see if this week in practice brings an open competition for the cornerback spot opposite Richard Sherman. Matt Breida was the...

Adrian Colbert misses second straight practice

Adrian Colbert misses second straight practice

The 49ers have questions on both sides of the ball. The San Francisco 49ers find themselves in a bit of a pickle on defense. The team released their Thursday practice participation report, and for the second straight day, free safety Adrian Colbert did not practice. Colbert is dealing with a hamstring injury, and his status is a big question mark for Sunday. D.J. Reed has been listed as the team’s backup free safety, even though Jimmie Ward has experience at the position. Ward played played free safety last year, but was moved to cornerback this season. Kyle Shanahan will likely offer...

No real surprises here The San Francisco 49ers have released their final Injury Report, leading up to this Sunday’s game at U.S. Bank Stadium. Out: Erik Magnuson C (Hamstring) Dekoda Watson LB (Hamstring) Doubtful: Malcolm Smith LB (Hamstring) Expected to Play: Garry Gilliam RT (Concussion) Jimmie Ward LCB (Quad) Malcolm Smith starts at WILL Linebacker for the 49ers, so that could be one situation to watch. 49ers getting relatively healthy at the right time

49ers getting relatively healthy at the right time

It’s hard to say the San Francisco 49ers are “healthy” in the bigger picture sense considering Jerick McKinnon is done for the year. However, that aside, the team is getting healthy at the right time. The 49ers released their Thursday practice participation report, and swing tackle Garry Gilliam and reserve cornerback Jimmie Ward were both upgraded from limited to full. Malcolm Smith remained limited, but defensive coordinator Robert Saleh was optimistic he would be good to go on Sunday. Erik Magnuson remains sidelined rehabbing his hamstring injury, but the rest of the current 53-man...

Will the 49ers win or lose in Week 1? 49ers fans think they will beat the Vikings by 1 The 49ers are a 6.5 point underdog, and I’ll be honest, I picked them in this poll to lose by 11. A win is not out of the question, but I don’t like this matchup. Add in Reuben Foster’s suspension, no Jerick McKinnon, and Malcolm Smith and Jimmie Ward questionable for this weekend, and I just don’t...

How did you guys come out of that game yesterday from a health standpoint? “The guys who won’t be available for next week, [WR Aaron] Burbridge, [WR Dante] Pettis and [DB] Jimmie Ward, they all should be good for Week 1, but definitely aren’t going to have them this week.” What are Burbridge and Pettis’ injuries? “Burbridge was his hamstring. Pettis bruised his knee. Pettis, we’re going to take care of, maybe he could go....

49ers’ Kyle Shanahan on Jimmie Ward’s latest injury: ‘I feel for him’

After finishing three of his first four NFL seasons on injured reserve, 49ers backup cornerback Jimmie Ward won’t finish this preseason healthy. On Sunday, head coach Kyle Shanahan said he expects Ward will be ready for the regular-season opener at Minnesota on Sept. 9, but he will be sidelined for the preseason finale with a strained quadriceps. Ward exited a 23-17 preseason loss to the Colts with the injury Saturday after playing two special-teams snaps. Ward, who dealt with a hamstring injury in training camp, has missed 22 of 64 career games. He’s...
