Chicago Bears Training Camp 2014: July 27 Open Thread

The first padded practice of training camp. What will happen today? Welcome to the third day of training camp, as well as the first day of padded practices. There have been a fair amount of new developments in camp already, as well as a couple of opportunities. With Tim Jennings taking practice off yesterday with a quad injury, Kelvin Hayden took some of the nickel snaps, and Kyle Fuller plenty more starter's reps. Shea McClellin and Khaseem Greene both made some strong plays, and Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery returned to business as usual. Meanwhile, Jimmy Clausen so far may have...

Jay Cutler helped Jimmy Clausen learn the playbook

BOURBONNAIS — If there’s one place where Jay Cutler makes friends easily, it’s the quarterback room. Newcomer Jimmy Clausen discovered that immediately after signing with the Bears last month. Cutler helped Clausen begin a crash course in coach Marc Trestman’s offense that could pay big dividends in training camp. “He helped me out a lot — especially that first day, going through the formations and just the basic things they do in this offense,”...

The former Notre Dame All-American, fully recovered from surgery last season after a dreadful stint with the Carolina Panthers, is an intriguing candidate after impressing during a tryout last month. ‘‘I really like how he came in here,” general manager Phil Emery said....

Palmer, Clausen to battle for No. 2 QB

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. -- Jordan Palmer, 30, showed the Chicago Bears' coaching staff enough in the offseason program to enter training camp as the No. 2 quarterback, but Palmer's spot on the roster is far from secure. The most immediate threat to Palmer appears to be former Notre Dame standout and 2010 Carolina Panthers second-round draft choice Jimmy Clausen. Clausen was a late addition to the offseason roster, but he clearly impressed the coaching staff at the tail end of organized team activities and during the veteran minicamp after signing a one-year deal with the Bears on June 5.
