Bill O’Brien on J.J. Watt: ‘He’s worth every penny’

PHOENIX – After the season, Texans coach Bill O’Brien watched tape of every player on his team. He watched cutups over and over, and it’s not surprising what player stood out the most. O’Brien came up with an astonishing statistic on defensive end J.J. Watt, the NFL Defensive Player of the Year. “I counted 120 […]

J.J. Watt has interesting reaction to Vince Wilfork signing

Texans star defensive lineman J.J. Watt, as he is wont to do, chimed in on Twitter with his reaction to the team signing longtime Patriots defensive lineman Vince Wilfork: haha — JJ Watt (@JJWatt) March 16, 2015   Of course, Watt’s reaction is subject to interpretation. It’s safe to say Texans opponents probably aren’t laughing […]

Locker, Gabbert, Ponder are busts who prove it's difficult to judge quarterbacks

Quarterbacks Jake Locker, Blaine Gabbert and Christian Ponder were the eighth, 10th and 12th players picked in the 2011 draft. And both Locker and Gabbert were picked in front of J.J. Watt, who went 11th to Houston. Those three players are now busts and examples of how teams either overvalue quarterbacks or don’t judge them well. Locker retired Tuesday, saying he’d lost the desire to play football. He probably got tired of getting hurt because he couldn’t stay healthy. read more

Should the Redskins Trade for Tom Savage?

Is Tom Savage someone you would make a move for if you were Scot McCloughan? This is a quick-hitter, as I really don't know of a good answer here other than, "Ken, you're a genius!" When I saw Brian Hoyer sign with Houston to compete with Ryan Mallett for the right to pilot the USS JJWatt, I thought that there was an opportunity to add a young player possibly on the outs with his current team. I really liked Tom Savage out of college. After earning Freshman All-American honors at Rutgers, Savage wrapped up his college career in 2013 at Pitt (he did have some injury issues and a hardship...

Detroit Lions won't use franchise tag on Ndamukong Suh

Detroit Lions won't use franchise tag on Ndamukong Suh

The Detroit Lions will not place the franchise tag on Ndamukong Suh according to the team web site. The deadline to use the tag is 4 p.m. today. The Lions would have had to pay $26.8 million to Suh for the 2015 season if they used the tag. The team will continue to negotiate with him. He can become a free agent at 4 p.m. on March 10. It's likely the defensive tackle will demand the type of money defensive end J.J. Watt got from the Houston Texans — six years for $100 million with $51.7 million guaranteed. That is similar to defensive tackle Gerald McCoy who signed an...

Detroit Lions must decide on Ndamukong Suh franchise tag by 4 p.m.

If the Detroit Lions decide to use the franchise tag on Ndamukong Suh, the decision must be made by 4 p.m. today (Monday). It would cost $26.8 million for the tag and would only guarantee that Suh would be with the team one more year. If the Lions decide to tag him today, they can keep negotiating on a long-term deal until July 15. If they do not use the franchise tag, they will keep talking with his agent trying to work out a deal before free agency opens at 4 p.m. on March 10.  Suh will likely demand the type of money defensive end J.J. Watt got from the Houston Texans —...
