Film study: Why the Giants re-signed John Jerry

Film study: Why the Giants re-signed John Jerry

Last week, the New York Giants re-signed right guard John Jerry to a three-year, $10 million deal. Jerry has been in East Rutherford for three years, but 2016 was the first time he showed signs of being a competent starting offensive guard. Related:John Jerry on re-signing with Giants: This is home Jerry’s PFF grade was a lowly 55.0 in 2015 — his run blocking was a monstrosity and the pass blocking wasn’t much better. But last season, something changed. Jerry’s pass blocking grade shot up to 84.1, tied for 23rd in the league. Jerry handles Julius Peppers nicely on this play...

Five things I think I think: Ways free agency could impact Giants draft

Five things I think I think: Ways free agency could impact Giants draft

Have the priorities changed for Big Blue? Maybe The Johnathan Hankins situation remains unresolved, but the New York Giants have nonetheless already done the bulk of their important free agency work. How might what they have — and have not — done impact the 2017 NFL Draft? Let’s use today’s “Five things I think I think” column to answer the ways I believe free agency has done that. Left tackle remains a priority Perhaps this one falls into the Captain Obvious category. The Giants added D.J. Fluker in free agency. They have Fluker, John Jerry, Bobby Hart, and maybe even Brett...

2017 NFL Draft Prospect Profile: Pat Elflein, C/G, Ohio State

Might the Giants add another interior lineman in the draft? The 2017 offensive tackle class is a shallow one. There are a few talented players at the top of the depth chart, but not much behind them. This year’s crop of interior offensive linemen, on the other hand, is deep and varied. While it might be overshadowed by the very impressive pass rusher, defensive back, tight end, and running back classes, there are quite a few talented interior offensive linemen. The New York Giants have added D.J. Fluker and re-signed John Jerry to compete for the right guard spot, while Justin Pugh and...

Giants interested in trading for Joe Thomas: report

Giants interested in trading for Joe Thomas: report

The New York Giants entered the free agency period knowing they had to upgrade their offensive line, but the market took an interesting shift. Marginal players received hefty contracts, leaving those with limited cap space very little to pick from. Related:John Jerry on re-signing with Giants: This is home The Giants ultimately re-signed guard John Jerry on a three-year deal and added offensive lineman D.J. Fluker, who had previously been released by the Los Angeles Chargers, on a one-year, prove-it deal. Fluker is expected to be compete at both tackle and guard. Ultimately, the Giants...

Five things I think I think after a wild Friday for the Giants

Five things I think I think after a wild Friday for the Giants

Thoughts on JPP, Geno Smith, a final run with Eli, and more What does all of Friday’s activity by the New York Giants, with a new deal announced for Jason Pierre-Paul, two quarterbacks signed and the official announcement that offensive lineman John Jerry is returning, mean? After a day to process it all, let’s break it down. We will do that with a special weekend edition of “Five things I think I think.” The Giants are all in for the short term I have said throughout the offseason that the Giants have a short window remaining with Eli Manning, and they need to make moves to...

What is Ereck Flowers up to, and more New York Giants questions

It is mailbag time, so let’s see what Giants fans are wondering about Friday was a whirlwind day for the New York Giants, and there are lots of questions on the minds of the fans. Let’s open the Big Blue View mailbag and see what pops out. Dennis Fekert asks (via e-mail): Do we know or can we find out what Flowers is doing in the offseason? Is he working on his craft like John Jerry did last offseason? In other words does he get it? Does he himself see that he needs to improve? Ed says: Players can do whatever they want in the offseason, teams have no control. They can, and do, set...

John Jerry on re-signing with Giants: 'This is home'

The New York Giants let right guard John Jerry hit the free agent market and it looked for a moment that he may go to another team. Ultimately, he re-signed with the Giants on a three-year deal to likely reclaim his starting spot at right guard. Related:NFL Free Agency: Everything we need to know about Giants Geno Smith Jerry was a big part of the offense starting in all 17 games, including the playoff game against the Green Bay Packers and knew that re-signing with the Giants was the right decision for him” “No doubt about it, this is where I wanted to be the whole time,” Jerry...

Giants secondary sending curious tweets in unison

It’s been an interesting day for the New York Giants all-around — they’ve re-signed defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul despite his initial tweets to the contrary, agreed to terms with quarterback Geno Smith and finalized contracts with guard John Jerry and quarterback Josh Johnson. Related:Giants to sign quarterback Geno Smith: report But is something more on the horizon? Maybe or maybe not, but the Giants secondary is certainly tweeting in unison, and about one very specific piece subject matter. From cornerback Janoris Jenkins to safety Landon Collins, a large portion of the...

Giants’ D.J. Fluker says he “came in for right guard”

Ex-Charger willing to play wherever he is needed Right guard? Right tackle? Somewhere else? Where will the New York Giants use offensive lineman D.J. Fluker, signed as a free agent just a few days ago? Appearing on Sirius XM NFL Radio Wednesday morning, Fluker said he “came in for right guard, but anything can happen.” Anything already did as, after signing Fluker, the Giants re-signed John Jerry, the man who spent most of the last three seasons starting at right guard for the Giants. Fluker told co-hosts Bill Lekas and Brad Hopkins that he will play “where they need me.” Does this...

New York Giants have $4.415 million in salary cap space

At least, that is what current NFLPA records show How much salary cap space do the New York Giants have? It is a question that comes up often, especially at this time of year. Giving an exact answer is difficult as the cap is fluid. The NFLPA web site shows the Giants with only $4.415 million in cap space, among the lowest totals in the league. That appears to include the D.J. Fluker signing, with a $1.5 million base salary for 2017, but not the re-signing of John Jerry. Over the Cap shows the Giants with $5.742 million, a total that does not include the signings of Fluker, Jerry or Orleans...

“Snowpocalypse Day” podcast: Talking Giants football

What else is there to do on a snowy day? What else is there for a couple of snowed-in football writers to do on a miserable day other than talk a little football. So it is that Pat Traina (Inside Football) and yours truly put together a new episode of the Big Blue Chat podcast on Tuesday. There are, of course, lots of things going on with the New York Giants. We touched on many of them: The resigning of John Jerry, and the competition for jobs that will ensue on the right side of the offensive line. The free agent situation with Johnathan Hankins, and some speculation on why he remains on...

Best available free agents for the New York Giants

There are still bargains to be had It is bargain hunting time in NFL free agency. So, let’s go picking through the bargain bin and see if we can uncover any players who might be fits for the salary cap-strapped New York Giants. Offensive line The Giants added D.J. Fluker and re-signed John Jerry to set up a nice competition for spots with Bobby Hart on the right side. What they haven’t done is add anyone to the mix to compete with Ereck Flowers at left tackle. King Dunlap is one option. Released on Monday by the Los Angeles Chargers, Dunlap, 32 next season, is still a decent player....
