Clausen wins backup QB job in Chicago

Bears release Jordan Palmer The Chicago Bears are keeping quarterback Jimmy Clausen over Jordan Palmer, who was released on Sunday. For now, Clausen has won the Bears' backup job, sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. (ESPN) FF Today's Take: This is only noteworthy as Clausen is the backup to Jay Cutler who has had his share of injury issues over the years. Josh McCown showed well in relief of Cutler a year ago.

Breaking Down Josh McCown's Game Film, Preseason Week 2 against the Dolphins

The Buccaneers finally got things going on offense, and Josh McCown was able to show a bit more of what he can do thanks to his teammate's improvements on Saturday night. The first-team Buccaneers offense was improved on Saturday night against the Miami Dolphins, moving the ball down the field more than they did against the Jaguars, and even finding the end zone early in the second quarter. Better blocking helped set the table for a slightly improved offensive performance, so how did the Bucs' starting quarterback do with a better situation around him? Here is your play-by-play...

Follow-Up From Bucs-Dolphins

It’s always good to win and as Tampa Bay coach Lovie Smith says, if you’re keeping score, you want to win. Having said that, there were a lot of positive things to come out of Tampa Bay’s 20-14 loss to Miami on Saturday: THE GOOD Offensive Line Improved: They didn’t look like the Hogs from Washington but they kept Josh McCown upright for the most part. The guard play of Patrick Omameh and Oniel Cousins did enough to likely warrant… Read More »

Protecting QB among Bucs' offensive issues

TAMPA — Bucs QB Josh McCown has the ability to scramble when the blocking breaks down, but he knows he has to do a better job of protecting himself.

Lovie needed a leader at QB, and team-first McCown was his man

TAMPA, Fla. — Lovie Smith was happy for Josh McCown. When the Bears’ backup quarterback took his star turn last season for five starts, his former coach, living down the road from Halas Hall, sent him texts of congratulations. ‘‘A player who’s been in the league that long hasn’t gotten an opportunity to be in a great situation,’’ Smith said. ‘‘But he got that and took advantage of it.’’ Smith is banking on recreating the situation with the...

Preseason power rankings: No. 13 Chicago Bears

Reviewing Josh McCown's performance against the Jacksonville Jaguars

A play-by-play look at the Buccaneers' veteran quarterback's first game under center is full of high-pressure situations, and McCown definitely didn't navigate them as well as expected. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers ruffled plenty of feathers in Bucs Nation by signing Josh McCown this offseason and immediately naming him the starter. In doing so, the Bucs replaced Mike Glennon with an unproven veteran, sparking intense debates fueled by the divide over the quality of Glennon's play the year before. So this preseason, everything the two quarterbacks do will be under the microscope. And rather...

McCown Struggles In Preseason Opener

Tampa Bay quarterback Josh McCown did not look very good in his debut under center.Fantasy Spin:McCown was 2-for-4 for 20 yards and a "pick-six." He didn't get much help from his offensive line. They will all have to be much better or fantasy owners will start to devalue everyone on the Bucs' offense.

Jaguars preseason 2014: Buccaneers having similar issues with pass rush, offensive line

We asked Sander Philipse of Bucs Nation five questions about the Jaguars preseason opener against the Buccaneers and it turns out the Bucs have similar issues. Is there a real quarterback battle going on between Mike Glennon and Josh McCown, or is McCown clearly the starter? McCown is clearly the starter. The Buccaneers pay some lip service to the concept of there being a competition, but the only way Mike Glennon starts the season is if McCown gets injured or looks absolutely horrifying in preseason. But McCown has looked good in training camp, and there's no real reason to believe that...

10 Bears worth watching in first preseason game

The first preseason game is a boring, perfunctory exercise for many — the cost inefficiency for season-ticket holders is exceeded only by the last preseason game. Not that it’s unwatchable. But nobody knows if what they’re seeing is real. In the preseason opener at Carolina last year, Jon Bostic intercepted Cam Newton and returned it 51 yards for a touchdown. Matt Blanchard threw a 58-yard pass to Marquess Wilson. Josh McCown had a 47.4 rating in an...
