Proposal up for vote might have taken Julian Edelman off field in Super Bowl

PHOENIX -- One proposal that clubs will vote on at the NFL's annual meeting might have taken New England Patriots receiver Julian Edelman off the field late in Super Bowl XLIX had the rule been instituted last season. When Edelman caught a 21-yard pass over the middle on third-and-14 early in the fourth quarter, and was drilled by safety Kam Chancellor in the process, he appeared dazed after the hit. But Edelman returned to the huddle and never left the game.

Patriots workouts include Michigan QB

The thoroughness of the New England Patriots on the scouting trail shines through at this time of year. With this in mind, we pass along this nugget from ESPN Lions reporter Michael Rothstein: The Patriots have had success with Michigan quarterbacks, of course. They’ve also had success looking at college quarterbacks and projecting them to wide receiver (e.g. Julian Edelman), which is a transition Gardner probably will be making in the NFL.

Is Julian Edelman the Toughest to Cover in the League?

ESPN's Mel Kiper spoke with a general manager who said that the Patriots wide receiver is the "toughest cover" in the entire league. Do you agree or disagree? ESPN's Mel Kiper generated waves with his recent re-mock of the 2009 NFL draft, where two Patriots were featured in the top 10. Right tackle Sebastian Vollmer was sent to Green Bay at 9th overall. Wide receiver Julian Edelman went to Seattle at 4th overall. In his justification for Edelman going 4th overall, Kiper quotes an NFL general manager who calls Edelman "the toughest cover in the NFL right now." That's some crazy...

NFL Draft: Mel Kiper 2009 re-draft is complete crap

Mel probably should have flushed his 2009 NFL re-draft down the toilet before he hit 'publish.' Mel Kiper recently did a re-draft of the first round of the 2009 NFL draft. At No. 1, Kiper still has the Lions taking Georgia QB Matthew Stafford, followed by Clay Matthews to the Rams, LeSean McCoy to the Chiefs, Julian Edelman to the Seahawks and Vontae Davis to the Jets. Edelman? Really? the same guy who had a whopping total 714 yards through his first four seasons? The other four guys have a legitimate argument to go this high, but Edelman here is an absolute joke. But it gets better. At...

Class of '09: Julian Edelman, Sebastian Vollmer rate highly in Mel Kiper Jr. re-draft

It's the NFL draft season, which means various analysts produce their "re-drafts" from the past, looking back on a draft and considering how it would unfold today based on the players' performance. As part of an ESPN.com Insider piece , Mel Kiper goes through the exercise for 2009, and the New England Patriots land two players in the top 10: Receiver Julian Edelman (pictured) and offensive tackle Sebastian Vollmer. Kiper passes along one conversation he had with an NFL general manager who called Edelman, "the toughest cover in the NFL right now.

Stevie Johnson and the Patriots' offense

Free-agent wide receiver Stevie Johnson is reportedly visiting the New England Patriots Monday, and that has us going through his career numbers against them. From 2010-2013, Johnson hurt the Patriots. Over seven games against them, he totaled 31 receptions for 406 yards, with four touchdowns and 24 first downs. His 13.09 average yards per reception in those games highlights one of his top assets -- a vertical presence. For a comparison, let's look at the Patriots' top three receivers from 2014 in that average-yards-per-catch category: Julian Edelman -- 10.

2015 Patriots GIF of the Year: Malcolm Butler Saves the Season vs Edelman was a College Quarterback

The grand finale of the New England Patriots GIF of the Year tournament! click bracket to enlarge 1. Malcolm Butler Saves the Season 1. Edelman was a College Quarterback I don't think this tournament could have played out any more perfectly. These are easily the two most memorable plays of the entire season. They received the first and third most votes over the course of the season, with Rob Gronkowski's one-handed grab against the Broncos coming in second and falling short in its bracket quadrant. Julian Edelman's pass to Danny Amendola saved the Patriots season, with Josh McDaniels...

2015 Patriots GIF of the Year: Edelman was a College Quarterback vs Opposite Ends of the Spectrum

Which GIF makes it to the GIF of the Year Finals?! 1. Edelman was a College Quarterback After an opening round scare against Julian Edelman (yeah that happened) with a 55% to 45% margin, Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola cruised through the Matt Light division with at least 86% of the vote in the following three rounds. This is the play that everyone was waiting for through Edelman's entire career. Everyone knew it was happening and there was a certain peace that it was going to be successful. The mental fortitude required from Josh McDaniels to call this play at a crucial junction in the...

Gronk Does Gronk Things Rob Gronkowski took down Mark Wahlberg in the opening round in a 90% to 10% blowout. He followed that up with matching 77% to 23% victories over Julian Edelman's 69 yard touchdown and Vince Wilfork's game winning interception over the Raiders. This touchdown is probably the greatest catch-and-run of the entire year. I could watch it forever. 16. Tom Brady Takes Matters In His Own Hands How about the 16 seed that...

Packers Sign Randall Cobb 4 Years, $40 Million; Bill Belichick Proven a Genius

The Packers have extended their slot receiver and in doing so prove Bill Belichick's genius. The Green Bay Packers have extended wide receiver Randall Cobb on a four year, $40 million contract. It's a great move for the Packers to lock in one of Aaron Rodgers favorite receivers for the long term. It also shows that Bill Belichick is a total freaking genius. While Cobb is earning $10 million per year, the Patriots have their own slot receiver toiling away for under half the price. Julian Edelman signed a 4 year, $17 million contract prior to the 2014 season. It's look amazing in retrospect....

2015 Patriots GIF of the Year: Gronk Does Gronk Things vs Julian Edelman 69!

Second round of the Kevin Faulk division! 2. Gronk Does Gronk Things Can you believe that this was still a two score game with just under half of the fourth quarter to go? The Colts were still totally in this game against the Patriots. It didn't seem like it was "that" close. Not really that close, but, you know, close enough. But then Rob Gronkowski decided that it was time to throw the Colts out of the club. This was 3rd down, too, which means that this was a reasonably high stakes play that Gronk took all the way to the house. 7. Julian Edelman 69! Is this all we need to know about...

2015 Patriots GIF of the Year: Edelman was a College Quarterback vs Collins Covers Calvin

The Matt Light Division plays in the second round! 1. Edelman was a College Quarterback Julian Edelman barely beat Julian Edelman in the opening round, with a score of 55% to 45%. It was a nail biter, but ultimately the voters believed that Edelman dishing out the hit was a little better than him fighting through a Bam Bam Kam Chancellor hit. I don't think there's been a better play over the past few seasons that allowed Patriots fans to watch the play beat the opponent as it unfolds. Watching from my couch, I saw Edelman run to the top of the screen and immediately thought oh, look, he...
