Julius Peppers Isn't The Only Lineman Headed To The Pro Bowl This Year

Windy City Gridiron — More photos » Nam Y Huh - AP Browse more photos » That's right folks, I'm definitely sitting down for a glass of that orange and blue Kool-Aid on this one. On top of other such prognostication that is better suited for a drunken vagrant sporting a Ditka jersey outside of Soldier Field, such as my proclamation that the Chicago Bears will win the NFC North this year, I'm going to step my heavily marbled frame out on that willow thin branch again for the following statement. Tommie Harris is going to ...

Lovie: Even with Peppers, Bears will blitz more

Bears Blog | Chicago Breaking Sports — Bears coach Lovie Smith meets the media Thursday on the first day of camp. (Phil Velasquez/Tribune)By Brad Biggs The Bears made Julius Peppers the highest-paid player in franchise player in March because they want him to rush the pass rusher like no one has done in these parts since Richard Dent was in his heyday. The defense consistently struggled to rush the passer last year and in the two other seasons since the appearance in Super Bowl XLI. But don't think that means coach Lovie Smith and new defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli are going to shy away from the blitz. The Bears have been amon...

As Bears camp opens, playoffs clearly on the line

Daily Herald — So, what happens if the Bears are better this year but still don't make the playoffs? That's a very real possibility considering the impressive upgrade and free-agent haul of defensive end Julius Peppers, running back Chester Taylor and tight end/blocker Brandon Manumaleuna.

For Carolina Panthers' defensive line, time for theories is over

Charlotte Observer — (By Darin Gantt, dgantt@hearldonline.com) This is the sixth in a series of position-by-position looks at the Panthers as they prepare for the first day of training camp practice on July 29. As long as John Fox has been the head coach of the Carolina Panthers, his teams were defined by their defenses, specifically the pressure they were able to generate up front. It's a philosophy of his, made manifest by the fact he was able to draft DE Julius Peppers with his first pick and the trickle-down that his talent created.

Peppers beefs up Bears' special teams defense

Chicago Sun-Times — Dave Toub knows the Bears signed defensive end Julius Peppers primarily to sack quarterbacks. But the Bears' special-teams coach hoped Peppers could do something else: block some kicks, too. Since the NFL started tracking blocked kicks in 1978, Peppers is second only to Cleveland Browns defensive tackle Shaun Rogers (16) with nine. Toub is excited because Peppers will team with Israel Idonije to comprise a unit that will strike fear into the hearts of kickers and special-teams coordinators.

  • Urlacher sits out Bears' Saturday night practice Bears Blog | Chicago Breaking Sports By Vaughn McClure BOURBONNAIS -- The Bears' first training camp practice in pads was, well, uneventful. The absence of Brian Urlacher spiced it up a little bit. The Bears linebacker was given the night off Saturday, and coach Lovie Smith said it had nothing to do with Urlacher's surgically repaired right wrist. Smith said it had nothing to do with his back either. "Just me keeping him out," Smith said. "He practiced this morning. He should practice tomorrow." Smith confirmed that safety Chris Harris suffered a back injury while cornerback Tim Jennings is dealing with a knee injury. The c...
