Raiders linebacker James Cowser growing into role as Khalil Mack’s backup

Backing up Khalil Mack is no picnic. Often, after the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year does something remarkable at practice, Raiders coaches will look at the next guy in line, second-year pass rusher James Cowser. “They’ll say, ‘Hey, did you see how Khalil did that?’ and I will be like, ‘Yeah, I saw it … “‘I don’t know if that’s in my skill set necessarily, but I will try,’” Cowser tells them, laughing at the memory. “I try to emulate it. It’s interesting seeing what Khalil does well and integrating it...

Mack ready for regular season, Raiders defense still has work to do

OAKLAND The Los Angeles Rams assigned two blockers to Khalil Mack, a common practice against the reigning defensive player of the year. Sometimes it works. This time it didnt. The Raiders edge rusher split the double team found his target and pounced. Jared Goff stood zero chance. There was no evading this one. Mack brought last years No. 1 overall pick down with authority, claiming a sack that ultimately wont count in his 2017 total.

Raiders Derek Carr, Khalil Mack say their anthem gesture is no protest

While Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch won’t discuss why he is sitting for the national anthem, teammates Derek Carr and Khalil Mack were both in the locker room late Saturday night, explaining their subtle actions during the anthem before the preseason game. Carr placed his right hand on Mack’s left shoulder as a show of solidarity, they said. “We’re not protesting,” Carr said. “We’re not doing anything like that. What we wanted to do was show all the kids that look up to me, look up to him, that white kids, blue kids, brown kids, blue,...

Snap count: Young Raiders defenders play extended stretch

The Raiders were missing nine starters on offense during Saturdays 20-10 preseason loss to Arizona. The defense was a bit more intact, with just edge rushers Khalil Mack and Bruce Irvin sitting this one out.The non-injury related absences made sense. The offense has plenty of established veterans who have already played together. The Raiders defense, by contrast, has some bonding to do.

Sean Smith a letdown in Raiders’ preseason opener

Nobody got hurt Saturday night — which is the preseason prayer for all teams — except for maybe the pride and feelings of Raiders cornerback Sean Smith. Golden also beat starting cornerback David Amerson inside earlier, on a 12-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter from Carson Palmer. Veteran TJ Carrie replaced him in camp, as the eventual heir to that spot, first-round pick Gareon Conley, is out with a leg injury. While coach Jack Del Rio sat out nine offensive starters, he only gave defensive end Khalil Mack and linebacker Bruce Irvin the night off on the other side of the...

Von Miller has second-best odds to win Defensive Player of the Year

Von Miller has second-best odds to win Defensive Player of the Year

Denver Broncos outside linebacker Von Miller and Oakland Raiders outside linebacker Khalil Mack are racing to 30 sacks in a single season, and oddsmakers are taking notice. Miller and Mack each have five to one odds to win the Defensive Player of the Year award, according to Bovada (via the Denver Post’s Nicki Jhabvala). Those are the second-best odds in the NFL, trailing only Houston Texans defensive lineman J.J. Watt (7/2). Los Angeles Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa (9/1) has the fourth-best odds to take home the award. If this is worth anything, Bovada released its odds for...

Vanderdoes makes strong first impression; 'he's going to make some noise this year'

NAPA Derek Carr never stood a chance. Eddie Vanderdoes quickly broke through the offensive front, charged into the backfield and reached the Raiders star quarterback before completing his drop. Theres no hitting the signal caller in practice, but a simulated sack was enough.Khalil Mack was pumped. He let out a roar, rushed toward Vanderdoes and rewarded the rookie with a head butt. Bruce Irvin came around and smacked in the back of Vanderdoes helmet.

Derek Carr Believes He Could Beat Khalil Mack In A Game Of Basketball

Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr talks friendly hoops competition with defensive end Khalil Mack.

Irvin relishes “bad cop” role with Raiders

A thousand cop movies and TV shows can’t be wrong. Raiders defensive leaders Khalil Mack and Bruce Irvin relish playing those roles when it comes to helping and the getting the most out of the team’s rookies and second-year players. Linebacker Shilique Calhoun recently said Irvin and Mack were the two toughest coaches on the field. Irvin has been impressed with a couple of the rookies up front on the defensive line at training camp. “We are a confident group and we feel like we have everything we need to be a Top-5, Top-10 defense,” Irvin said. The defensive players could even...

Von Miller and Khalil Mack racing to 30 sacks in single season

Last season, Broncos linebacker Von Miller lost the Defensive Player of the Year award by one vote to Raiders linebacker Khalil Mack. There are no hard feelings between Miller and Mack, though. Despite playing for division rivals and competing for DPoY awards, Miller and Mack still train with each other during the offseason. They’re fierce competitors, though, and they’re both eyeing Michael Strahan’s record of 22.5 sacks in a single season. Earlier this week, Mack revealed that he’s aiming for 30 sacks in 2017. Oakland quarterback Derek Carr believes 30 sacks are within Mack’s...
