Camp Storylines: No. 3 Backfield logjam

Redskins Insider | Washington Post — With Redskins training camp opening Thursday afternoon, this week on Redskins Insider we'll count down the most pressing issues the team faces as players prepare to report. Which Pro Bowl runner on the Redskins' roster -- Clinton Portis, Larry Johnson or Willie Parker -- will emerge as the team's top back? A concussion cut short Portis's ineffective 2009 season. He was in poor condition from the outset, many of his teammates said. Coach Mike Shanahan approved the signings of Johnson and Parker this offseason, in part, to provide the first actual competition Portis has faced since Shanahan trad...

Larry Johnson gets scolding for poor effort on community service

Kansas City Star — Former Chiefs running back Larry Johnson avoided jail but didn’t escape the wrath of a judge who admonished him Friday for dropping the ball on his community service. Johnson, 30, was supposed to work with children at the Kansas City Police Athletic League for his 40 hours of court-ordered service. But Johnson refused to play sports with the children and instead told police officials he wanted to start an art program. The program didn’t draw enough students and quickly fizzled out. He got credit for nine hours of service.

Madden 2011 Washington Redskins Player Ratings

Hogs HavenLarry Johnson is going to have a tough time finding running room behind this year's offensive line in Madden 2011. via gomadden.com View full size photo » Over at ESPN.com, they have most of the individual player ratings up for this year's release of Madden 2011. At first glance, it would seem that the Madden folks aren't very bullish on the chances this Redskins squad will be above average this year. The Offensive Line stats are rather underwhelming and rightfully so I guess. Nobody is higher than 80, with Mike Williams being one of three "starters" to carr...

Clinton Portis, in shape and motivated, will enter camp determined

Redskins Insider | Washington Post — Don't be surprised if Clinton Portis is among the top candidates for this season's NFL comeback player of the year award. Although Portis has said little about his personal goals for 2010, the eight-year veteran is determined to show he's still an elite back capable of rushing for a 1,500-yard season, people familiar with his thinking said recently. Eager to prove his critics wrong, Portis has done everything Coach Mike Shanahan has asked of him, team sources said, and is expected to hold off fellow Pro Bowl backs Larry Johnson and Willie Parker for the starting job. Portis has surprised many ...

Arrowheadlines: Chiefs News 7/15

Arrowhead Pride — photo source Good morning, AP. Hope all is well. The Kansas City Chiefs news keeps on rolling. Season previews are all over the place for this team, Larry Johnson has been called out as one of the biggest jerks in the NFL, and Willie Lanier hasn't. Lots of news ahead. Read and enjoy. Chiefs Hall of Fame Willie Lanier remembered how Lamar Hunt went the extra mile for him. So accepting the Lamar Hunt Lifetime Achievement Award at the Kansas City Sports Commission’s 38th annual Sport KC Props ceremony on Wednesday night was as meaningful as any honor Lanier recalls receiving. And that&rsq...

The Rams' Free Agency: Is There Anyone Out There?

Turf Show Times — Twiddling their thumbs nervously and barely making any moves, much like the guy who brings twenty bucks to a five-to-play poker game, this offseason the Rams have passed on a bevy of big-name free agents.  While the Rams have rightfully stayed silent as aged veterans like Julius Peppers, Aaron Kampman, Donovan McNabb, Ben Watson, Kyle Vanden Bosch ,and Larry Johnson have flocked to teams with Super Bowl aspirations, the Rams have also sat on their hands as the rest of the league has snatched up younger, solid backups players and studs alike, including Jason Campbell, Santonio Holmes, Bran...

  • Santana Moss: 'You have to use those guys that can be game-changers' Redskins Insider | Washington Post There has been plenty of optimism surrounding the arrival of the new coaching regime in Washington and one person joining the chorus of praise around the new offense, directed by offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, is veteran wide receiver Santana Moss. After the team's walk-through on Saturday afternoon, Moss expressed his optimism regarding the new scheme and also in the way he will be used in the offense. Moss said he has been extremely impressed watching film of the Houston Texans, who have used the offense in recent seasons, and that he believes the Redskins have a chance to be very succ...
  • Shanahan stresses repetition in afternoon sessions Redskins Insider | Washington Post Day 3 of Redskins training camp is in the books, as the players just completed their afternoon "jog-through" practice session. As Coach Mike Shanahan said earlier in the day, defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth was on the field for the entirety of the session, but he did not participate. He stood among his teammates, though, often conferring with coaches or other linemen. Haynesworth remained after practice again, working on the far field with defensive coordinator Jim Haslett and line coach Jacob Burney. These afternoon sessions, each of which has lasted about 60 minutes, are just as Shanahan...
  • After recovering from injury, bulked-up Jeremy Jarmon readjusts to football Redskins Insider | Washington Post There are plenty of things NFL players tire of during a seemingly endless offseason. But for Redskins defensive lineman Jeremy Jarmon, it wasn't the typical complaint of endless weightlifting or conditioning -- it was the food. "It got to the point where I didn't enjoy eating," Jarmon said. Jarmon was originally expected to play outside linebacker in the Redskins' new 3-4 defensive scheme. Later in the offseason, however, the team asked him to bulk up and play on the line. Jarmon was listed at 278 pounds when the Redskins selected him in the third round of the supplemental draft last July, but...
  • Fisher: Test Haynesworth failed twice with Redskins is the same one Titans use Redskins Insider | Washington Post The Redskins have come under scrutiny this week because of the conditioning test Pro Bowler Albert Haynesworth has been required to pass in order to participate in practice. Haynesworth has failed in two attempts to complete two timed 300-yard shuttle runs, and Coach Mike Shanahan has remained firm. Some in the media have suggested Shanahan simply is making an example of Haynesworth, who skipped all but one day of Shanahan's first offseason program. But the Tennessee Titans, Haynesworth's former employer, handle things similarly for players who fail to participate enough in their workouts. "Th...
  • Shanahan: 'There's competition' at quarterback behind McNabb Redskins Insider | Washington Post Jonathan Newton/The Washington Post The Redskins have four quarterbacks in camp, and Donovan McNabb might be the only one who feels any sense of safety. Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan was asked about the battle for the No. 3 quarterback position, but that could be a spot on the depth chart that's irrelevant in September. Shanahan noted that for most of his career, he's only carried two quarterbacks in the regular season, which surely isn't a good news for Colt Brennan. Or Richard Bartel. Or maybe even Rex Grossman. With his familiarity with Kyle Shanahan's offense, Grossman opens camp as the pro...
  • Malcolm Kelly anxious to get back in the mix for Redskins Redskins Insider | Washington Post Santana Moss is perhaps the only receiver on the roster with a comfortable spot on the depth chart. Each of the other 10 receivers is battling for a position, and it's a safe guess that third-year receiver Malcolm Kelly has not started camp the way he probably hoped. Nursing a sore hamstring, Kelly was relegated to sidework during Saturday morning's practice and might not be back at full speed for a couple of days, said Coach Mike Shanahan. "I think any time, especially getting a new coach, we got a lot of receivers in, you never want to be sitting down while everybody else is practicing," Kel...
