New England Patriots Blog | ESPN Boston The Patriots lost running back Danny Woodhead in free agency this offseason, but the team was able to sign a player with a similar skill set in veteran Leon Washington, who finished second in the NFL in kickoff return average in 2012. But Washington may not be the only back responsible for taking on Woodhead's snaps (Woodhead was second to Stevan Ridley among running back snaps, playing 34.1 percent of the offensive plays in 2012), as third-year player Shane Vereen also looks to absorb a larger role as he continues his development.

New England Patriots June 14, 2013The Point After | Boston Herald Running back Leon Washington hasn't been around New England for very long, but he said today he already feels at home with the Patriots. It's still to be determined how much of a role Washington will have with the offense, which is crowded in the backfield, but he has the character to be a valued leader in the young room. But Washington will have an opportunity to seize the job as the top kick returner, and he has gotten chances returning punts in Julian Edelman's absence, too.

Pats Pulpit According to an article posted on ESPN Boston this afternoon, recent acquisition Leon Washington will be wearing the number 33 for the Patriots this year. Washington has been wearing 33 since 2010, when he signed with the Seattle Seahawks; his number during his tenure with the Jets, 29, was given to Seattle's first round pick Earl Thomas, which explains the change. Washington has seen equal success under both numbers, as he currently holds several New York and Seattle franchise records, including most kickoff return touchdowns (Seahawks, Jets), most kickoff return touchdowns in a singl...

The results have been fruitful, as Ridley was the NFL's seventh-leading rusher in 2012 and Vereen's unique athleticism was on display on several occasions (health has been an issue with him, however).
New England Patriots April 7, 2013The Huddle The New England Patriots are expected to consider RB Leon Washington as their primary kick returner and more of an emergency option or niche player on offense. Huddle Up: You never really know what to expect with Patriots' RBs, but it's hard to envision Washington getting as much work as No. 3 back Danny Woodhead (116 total touches for 747 total yards) did last season.

March 24, 2013New England Patriots Blog | ESPN Boston Quick-hit thoughts around the NFL and with the Patriots: 1. The Seahawks used running back Leon Washington sparingly on offense in his three seasons with the club, with Washington playing 372 total snaps from 2010-12. His 73 offensive snaps last season were a career-low. For perspective, Danny Woodhead played 423 offensive snaps last season. It's possible the Patriots see something the Seahawks don't, but if I had to guess, the New England coaching staff probably views Washington as the club's primary kickoff returner and more of an emergency option/niche player on offense.
