The non-nickel linebacker

Field Gulls — The Seahawks didn't select a single LB in the draft, Leroy Hill is probably getting arrested as I write this, Malcolm Smith is unproven and not even the most diehard Seahawks' fans know what numbers Korey Toomer, Allen Bradford and Mike Morgan wear. This leaves a lot of uncertainty about the WLB position. This uncertainty has even caused some people to suggest that Cliff Avril or Bruce Irvin should be moved to SLB while K.J. Wright slides over to WLB. This talk could be more excitement about Irvin/Avril than it is lack of faith that Smith can replace Hill, but regardless, these people ...

Reviewing Seattle's unrestricted free agents

Seahawks Blog | Seattle Times — With both Marcus Trufant and Leroy Hill in the news in the last two days, it seemed a good time to review the players off of last year's Seattle roster that are now unrestricted free agents. Here's the list, and the current status of that player: DT Alan Branch --- one-year contract with Buffalo. DE Patrick Chukwurah --- unsigned. K Steven Kauschka --- one-year contract with Seahawks. Malcolm Smith: Now or never

Field Gulls — The 2013 off-season has certainly been good to Malcolm Smith. Leroy Hill is out, no free agent WLBs were signed, and none of Seattle's eleven draft picks were used on the position either. I'm excited for him. Korey Toomer and Mike Morgan are the only returning Seahawks likely to challenge Smith for the starting job and both players have mostly been featured at SLB. John Lotulelei and Craig Wilkins were signed as UDFAs this year but the likelihood of them starting week one seems remote. Allen Bradford is another darkhorse candidate. Malcolm Smith is entering his third season and is the ...
