Jets Draft Results: Rookie Starter Power Rankings

Gang Green Nation — With the Draft in the books, it is now time to sort out where everybody fits on the team. Below are power rankings determining which rookie has the best chance to be in the starting lineup. 1. Tommy Bohanon Oddly, the last pick the Jets made probably has the best chance to start. Fullback is one of the few positions where the odds are good of getting a quality starter in the late rounds. Bohahon is said to be able to block, catch, and run the ball effectively. If he can do any one of those things, he'll be a better option than Lex Hilliard. 2. Geno Smith Unless he looks totally overwhe...

Jets Take FB Tommy Bohanon

Gang Green Nation — Well, the New York Jets have selected another fullback. Bohanon will likely replace Lex Hilliard, who many have expressed extreme disdain for. Here are the two notable things about Bohanon: he bench pressed 225lbs 36 times at the NFL Combine, and he had seven touchdown receptions as a senior at Wake Forest University. OC Marty Mornhinweg likes pass catching running backs and fullbacks, so in that sense, Bohanon makes sense. Bohanon is also an excellent lead blocker. Bohanon has experience as a FB/H-Back, so he is Josh Baker's logical replacement. Hopefully, he will replace both Baker a...

Lex Hilliard Re-Signed For One Year Contract

Gang Green Nation — Fullback Lex Hilliard has agreed to re-sign with the New York Jets for a one-year deal. This isn't anything spectacular. The terms of the deal aren't out yet, but I assume it's close to the veteran's minimum, if not the minimum on the button. Hilliard wasn't spectacular last year, but he wasn't godawful, at least in my opinion. I'll be interested to see how Marty Mornhinweg uses him in the new West Coast Offense. Hilliard hasn't had more than five catches in a year since 2009, when he had twenty under Dan Henning's Air Coryell system. I'd prefer to see a player with more upside than Hi...

Source: Jets re-sign FB Hilliard

Jets Blog | ESPN New York — Not every free agent is leaving the Jets. The Gang managed to retain FB Lex Hilliard on a one-year contract, a source confirmed. This was a bit of a surprise. Hilliard, a midseason replacement last year for John Conner, isn't a great fit in Marty Mornhinweg's West Coast-style system because he's not a particularly good pass receiver. He's a solid lead blocker in two-back sets, although his blitz pick-up leaves a lot to be desired. He blew some blocking assignments that resulted in quarterback hits.

Lex Hilliard: Stay or Go?

Gang Green NationLex Hilliard was signed by the Jets during the season. Hilliard had spent a few years played under Tony Sparano with the Dolphins. Like pretty much everything else Sparano brought to the team, this signing displayed the former offensive coordinator's anti-golden touch. It is tough to think of what Hilliard really did well. He seemed to consistently whiff on run blocks. The fullback position above all else requires one to block well. He blew assignments as a pass blocker. Receiving is usually not terribly important for a fullback. In the new offense, it takes on extra significance. Hill...
