The New Orleans Saints are considering making a trade on Friday night for a veteran cornerback. What It Means: Head coach Sean Payton refused to rule out a trade for New England Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler or Los Angeles Rams cornerback Trumaine Johnson. This comes less than 24 hours after the Saints used the 11th overall pick on Marshon Lattimore. Acquiring Butler seemed inevitable for New Orleans at one point, but talks have broken down and Butler hurt his chances of being traded by waiting too long to sign his restricted free agent tender. Either Butler or Johnson...

If the New England Patriots trade cornerback Malcolm Butler to the New Orleans Saints, "this is the week for it to happen," according to ESPN's Mike Reiss. What It Means: Reiss believes it will come down to whether the Saints are willing to trade the 32nd overall pick (which they received from the Patriots last month) or 42 and another pick. Per Reiss, the Patriots "don't have any qualms" in keeping Butler around at his $3.91 million salary. Butler was a second-team All-Pro selection in 2016. Butler would upgrade a New Orleans secondary that was third-worst in the NFL last...

2017 NFL Draft: First round inactivity reflects Patriots’ view of roster, available talent

For the second straight year, New England sat out the first round. The first round of the 2017 NFL draft came and went. Consequently, for the fifth time since Bill Belichick became head coach of the Patriots, they did not make a selection in the first round. In the past, New England always made at least one pick in round two;...

2017 NFL Draft: Saints select cornerback 11th overall, should end trade talks with Patriots for CB Malcolm Butler

2017 NFL Draft: Saints select cornerback 11th overall, should end trade talks with Patriots for CB Malcolm Butler

The Patriots are set to keep their All Pro cornerback in 2017. The New Orleans Saints selected Ohio State CB Marshon Lattimore with the 11th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, which should end any trade discussions between the Saints and the New England Patriots over CB Malcolm Butler. The Saints were the top landing spot for Butler, but they believed they could land a top cornerback talent in the first round of the draft. They were correct. Lattimore joins Delvin Breaux, Sterling Moore, and P.J. Williams and will immediately improve the defense. Breaux is scheduled for a new contract...

New Orleans Saints, Patriots CB Malcolm Butler have agreed to a multi-year contract – but trade appears unlikely

Despite the agreement, Butler appears to stay put. Entering the offseason, the New England Patriots had two defensive cornerstones headed for free agency: linebacker Dont’a Hightower (unrestricted) and cornerback Malcolm Butler (restricted). The Patriots were able to re-sign Hightower to a four-year contract while placing the first round tender on Butler. While this secured the team’s rights to keep the Pro Bowl cornerback for another year, Butler and his camp were hesitant to sign it – hoping, instead, for long-term contract that would pay him more than the tender’s $3.91 million....
