Who are these insane NFL execs that would take Mark Sanchez over Alex Smith?

ESPN’s AFC West reporters are running a roundtable where they’re asked to rank the quarterbacks in the AFC West. Philip Rivers is the answer for No. 1, obviously. I know some Chiefs homers might put Alex Smith above Derek Carr but most others probably wouldn’t. It’s fair to put Carr No. 2 and Alex No. 3. And the last one, of course, is Mark Sanchez in Denver. Do we have any disagreement here? Denver reporter Jeff Legwold somehow found some people that would take Sanchez over Alex Smith. Really. Raiders QB Derek Carr is the up-and-comer and in an informal poll of seven personnel...

The NFLPA drops the ball yet once again with flawed financial adviser program

The players' union has let down one of its own thanks to sheer incompetence. This week, news broke that Broncos quarterback Mark Sanchez and several other prominent athletes had been victims of a sketchy financial adviser who embezzled the athletes' money. Financial adviser Ash Narayan was able to convince Sanchez and 74 other clients, which included multiple prominent athletes, that he could be trusted with their earnings. After all, Narayan was a CPA, or so he said (he isn't), and the players were inclined to trust him in part because "he represented himself as a devout Christian...

Sanchez needs to be ... Sanchez. Really.

There's a prevailing theory out there that Mark Sanchez is a career backup who will never actually start for the Broncos. Here is why that is simply false. It's been said a million times already, "Mark Sanchez is a career backup!" or "Mark Sanchez is a butt fumbler," or "Mark Sanchez is a turnover machine." OK, fine, you are entitled to your opinion, but how can you be taken seriously when you say things such as "If Andrew Luck could do it..." or  "If Ben Roethlisberger can go 15-1, then Lynch can too!" What you're saying is that you know for a fact Paxton Lynch is a Hall-of-Fame...

Buddy Ryan had profound impact on Wade Phillips, Broncos defense

While Ryan never coached in Denver over the course of his storied career, he left a mark on the Broncos as giant as any coach who did. Without Buddy Ryan, there is no Wade Phillips. Without Phillips, there's no magic in Super Bowl 50 or historic/magical defense. The NFL lost a true icon on Tuesday. The greatest defensive coach in history, and the guy who, in a roundabout way, helped to make the recent season for the Denver Broncos so memorable and special. Ryan died at the age of 82 in Kentucky. No cause of death was given. James David Ryan was a Korean War veteran who went to Oklahoma...

Turnovers will be key in the Broncos quarterback competition

If Mark Sanchez can shed his turnover machine reputation in Denver, it would likely take an injury to not see him as the Broncos starting quarterback. Everybody likes a competition. Even when it's pretty obvious there really isn't a very interesting competition going on. Maybe if the Denver Broncos didn't have a ridiculously talented defense the quarterback decision might be a little more interesting. But with this crazy-good Broncos defense, the QB question is really an easy one. Who is the safest choice. Who's the guy who can move the ball down the field and not hand it over to the other...

Eagles training camp is five weeks away, and in each week leading up to it we’ll highlight a different position group where the starting job is up for grabs. We begin with the most exciting position in all of sports: place kicker. The incumbent: Cody Parkey and Caleb Sturgis. Parkey made the Pro Bowl as a rookie in 2014 after converting the 2nd most extra points and 3rd most field goals. In the 2015 he suffered a groin injury in the preseason and then re-aggravated it in Week 3 vs the Jets, ending his season. Sturgis was signed to replace him. Sturgis had his best season from 40+ yards...

NFL approves practice squad changes for two seasons

Nice. The NFL practice squad. Who cares about that thing, right? The 10-man unit is usually filled with fringe football players who aren't quite good enough to belong on a team's actual 53-man roster. It provides teams with some extra practice bodies to keep around, hence the name. But the practice squad is more than just that. It also houses some developmental players. Two years ago, the NFL and NFLPA agreed on extending the practice squad from the old limit of eight players to the new limit of 10 for just two seasons. It appears that agreement has been renewed for the next two...
