Windy City Gridiron The Chicago Bears slapped the franchise tag on Pro Bowl defensive tackle Henry Melton to prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent this off season. Melton accepted and signed his tag without the drama that surrounded last years tagged Bears player, Matt Forte. Melton is set to make $8,450,000 for his '13 season, but the Bears and Melton are expected to try and get a long term contract worked out before the July 15th deadline. Brad Biggs of the Tribune speculated on what a potential long term deal could look like. If the Bears use Forte's contract as a way of doing business ...

Chicago Bears May 17, 2013The Huddle Chicago Bears RB Matt Forte is preparing for a bigger role in the passing game this season. Huddle Up: Forte has always been a yardage hound; since entering the league only Adrian Peterson, Chris Johnson, and Ray Rice have more yards from scrimmage. And Marc Trestman's WCO-based offense features plenty of throwing to the backs, which will play to Forte's... uh, forte. Just don't expect a bunch of touchdowns and you'll be fine.

Forte gained 1,434 yards from scrimmage in 2012 (1,094 rushing and 340 receiving). Although he ranked second on the team in receptions (44), Forte caught 74 fewer passes than leading receiver Brandon Marshall (119). Forte's 44 catches in 2012 represented a career low for the running back, who in the four previous seasons, averaged close to 56 grabs per year. "I would expect (to be used more in the new offense). Coach Trestman I think he said he watched a lot of film on me and ha...
May 15, 2013Chicago Sun-Times New Bears tight end Martellus Bennett anticipates running back Matt Forte will have few problems learning everything that’s being asked of him in coach Marc Trestman’s playbook. Why would he? ‘‘Matt went to Tulane,’’ a laughing Bennett said Tuesday after the Bears’ second day of organized team activities. ‘‘That says a lot. It’s a lot to learn.’’ And it’s another sign of how important Forte will be to the offense this season. After Tuesday’s OTAs, Forte provided some glimpse of what’s in store. He’ll seemingly be used ...
Chicago Bears May 14, 2013Chicago Bears Blog | ESPN Chicago LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Chicago Bears running back Matt Forte never gave an explanation of the team's new offense under Marc Trestman, but it's clear he expects to return to form as the multi-dimensional threat he's been in the past. Forte called the team's new scheme "more challenging to me personally" because in addition to learning his own responsibilities, he has to know the jobs of others, not to mention the "why" behind what he's doing. "It's easy to learn what you do, but to actually have to learn the concepts of what the receivers are doing and why I have to run this route to get that...

Windy City Gridiron It won't have escaped your notice that the NFL is increasingly highlighting safety concerns in the wake of concussion lawsuits, deaths of former players who were found to suffer from CTE, and recently voting to ban running backs from initiating contact with the helmet when running outside of the tackles... a change that, inexplicably, had Matt Forte - of all people - bitching and moaning. The issue of unsafe tackling technique had been brought up by Lester a full year before Hardin got himself on IR in Tackling 101: Facemask on the football, see what you hit, and people (as well a...

Windy City Gridiron With only five picks in the draft this year, the Bears' options for younger talent are somewhat limited unless they bring in a large crop of undrafted free agents. That being said, if they wanted to pull in more draft picks for the 2013 draft, they have some parts that might fetch a pick or two. Matt Forte: Kev broached the discussion possibility on Twitter this morning, and in the discussion that followed, there were a few points made - he was one of the better receiving options on the team, he's been recently injury-prone and commands a pretty fair salary. Unfortunately, "injury-pron...
Chicago Bears April 6, 2013Chicago Sun-Times Running back Matt Forte better be up for doing big things — and doing them from a lot of different places — this upcoming season. Why? Because new Bears coach and noted offensive guru Marc Trestman absolutely loves him. He couldn’t stop gushing about him during the NFL owners meetings this past week in Phoenix. Trestman has spent more time watching and evaluating Forte than any other player who isn’t quarterback Jay Cutler. “I just got done looking at all his catches from 2010,” Trestman said. “He was on the line of sc...

"He has a skill set that goes the whole spectrum of what you want in a running back," Trestman told the Chicago Tribune. "He can run inside. He can run outside. He can catch the ball extremely well. I saw him as a very good route runner. I saw him on slants. I saw him run rail routes, sideline routes. He's extremely versatile. ... He can do everything. ... And he's a willing blocker, which is critically important."
