Matt Ryan had one of the greatest losing efforts in NFL history

Matt Ryan had one of the greatest losing efforts in NFL history

Of course he did. There were plenty of reasons the Falcons lost their game against the New Orleans Saints. Matt Ryan was not one of them. Ryan has gone nuts the last two weeks, accounting for nine touchdowns in eight quarters. Against a completely overmatched Saints secondary, Ryan was firing on all cylinders, repeatedly nailing downfield throws to pick up big gains for Calvin Ridley or Julio Jones. It was his best effort through the air all year, and one of the better efforts of his career in a loss. Naturally, it was also one of the best efforts in a loss ever. Such is the lot of Matt...

Watch the broadcast below beginning at 4:55 PM ET Well, that was certainly something. Boneheaded coaching before the half and a blocked punt notwithstanding, the Falcons’ defense got smacked around during today’s game—wiping out a historic performance by Matt Ryan and Calvin Ridley. Let’s talk about it on The Falcoholic Live’s Saints @ Falcons Post-Game Special. As always, we’ll also be taking your questions throughout the show. If you’d...

Watch: Calvin Ridley eats Saints defense alive for a touchdown

This was one of the prettiest plays you will see. We are still early in the Falcons Saints game, and in Atlanta, it’s all about Calvin Ridley. It’s funny to think he had zero touches against the Philadelphia Eagles in week 1, and he’s the MVP early in week 3. Here, Matt Ryan entered the dreaded red zone. Steve Sarkisian couldn’t get the offense scoring in week 1, but bounced back in week 2. Week 3 is off to a great start. Matt Ryan and Drew Brees will have a historic 20th meeting on Sunday

Matt Ryan and Drew Brees will have a historic 20th meeting on Sunday

The two quarterbacks will have met more times than any two QBs in the Super Bowl era. When Matt Ryan and Drew Brees play Sunday, it won’t just be the latest installment in a long-running rivalry. It’ll also be the continuation of a historic series of matchups between two durable, great players. Per Mike Triplett at ESPN, this will be the 20th time Ryan and Brees have met on the same field. That’s the most ever between two QBs in the Super Bowl era, as he notes, beating out Dan Marino-Jim Kelly and John Elway-Dave Krieg. If you wanted to argue that this is the greatest QB rivalry in...

Falcons 101: A hateful series with the Saints

Falcons 101: A hateful series with the Saints

Atlanta owns the series record but the Saints have controlled the last decade. Will this week be any different? The most underrated rivalry in professional sports will be renewed this weekend in Atlanta. The Falcons and the Saints hate each other more than the city of New Orleans hates the phrase “10 seconds left.” In a series dating all the way back to Nov. 26, 1967, the NFL’s version of “Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate” (well, not too clean since that whole “Bounty-gate” thing happened) is set to hold its 99th game on Sunday. Drew Brees, Matt Ryan, Steve Gleason, Steve...

Falcons players to start in your fantasy lineup or sit on your bench in Week 3

Falcons players to start in your fantasy lineup or sit on your bench in Week 3

It should be a shootout in Atlanta this weekend, and these are the players who should benefit from a fantasy standpoint. Now that was more like it from the offense in Week 2. Following a 12-point stinker against the Eagles, Atlanta’s offense exploded for 31 points against another solid defense in the Carolina Panthers. Matt Ryan blossomed, and was named this week’s “fantasy stud” as a result. Last week’s start/sit column was more hit and miss than the one leading up to Week 1. Not counting the Devonta Freeman sit advice (because he was injured and obviously wasn’t going to be...

Week three NFL power rankings: the Falcons stand pat after week two victory

Fact: Matt Ryan regularly makes onions cry The Atlanta Falcons did their most spirited impression of a complete professional football team during Sunday’s victory over the Carolina Panthers. It was a timely win in that it assuaged some of the hysteria that dominated the Falcons-related interwebs following a week one loss to World Champion Philadelphia Eagles in Philadelphia. Today is Tuesday, and you know what that means: power rankings! Let’s break ‘em down. ESPN: 8th (up two spots) The Falcons made a big improvement in the red zone from Week 1 to Week 2. They were 4-for-4...

Winners and losers after Week 2 for the Atlanta Falcons

Winners and losers after Week 2 for the Atlanta Falcons

The Falcons came, saw, and won. Which players distinguished themselves for good or for ill? With the game firmly in our rearview and a little time before we pivot to hating the Saints in earnest for the rest of the week, it’s time to look at whose stock is up and whose stock is down heading into Week 3. We think the names this week are pretty obvious. Winners QB Matt Ryan He had the quintessential Matt Ryan bounceback game, one designed to erase any doubt about his fitness for the office of quarterback. Aside from three bad throws, he was accurate, he moved well in the pocket, and he...
