49ers WR Quinton Patton among opening game 'locks'

FFToolbox.com — Taking a very early look at the 49ers 53-man roster, CSNbayarea.com beat writer Matt Maiocco projected fourth-round selection Quinton Patton among the wide receiver "locks." Also in that category, Michael Crabtree and Anquan Boldin, but not Mario Mannigham and A.J. Jenkins. Several draft touts talked up the Patton before the draft, but the talented Louisiana Tech product slipped into the middle rounds. So why the early hype in terms of sticking with the team? Because head coach Jim Harbaugh already tagged Patton as "my favorite player" after the rookie flew out to the 49ers headquarters on his...

Golden Nuggets: Heavy Competition at Wide Receiver

Niners Nation — Now that we have a good idea who we will have on the roster going into training camp, questions about the depth chart are starting to arise. One of the biggest questions is in regards to the wide receiver position. It's pretty safe to assume that Michael Crabtree is the No. 1 option with Anquan Boldin lining up across the field. Where the rest slot in is a big fat mystery. Mario Manningham would be presumed to be the No. 3, based on his body of work. He was injured late in the year and his rehab is reportedly coming along slowly. Kyle Williams is also recovering from a season-ending in...

NFL Top 100 Players of 2013 begins: Where will Colin Kaepernick, Michael Crabtree make an appearance?

Niners Nation — For the third straight year, NFL Network is putting together their Top 100 list of current players, as voted on by the players. They released spots 91-100 last week, and will release 81-90 this Thursday, May 2, at 5:00 p.m. PT. I recall several players asking who was doing the voting as they had not gotten a ballot, but what are you gonna do, right? They don't actually clarify to the public what the term "Top 100 of 2013" means. I assume it means who who are your top 100 at this very moment. However, it would not surprise me if some voting players based it on 2012 performances. Last ye...

49ers wide receivers: What would be improvement for A.J. Jenkins?

Niners Nation — Earlier today, Matt Maiocco put together an article looking at the wide open battle that is the 49ers wide receiver depth chart behind Michael Crabtree and Anquan Boldin. The 49ers drafted Quinton Patton this past weekend, a year after drafting A.J. Jenkins in the first round. They join Mario Manningham and Kyle Williams, as well as Ricardo Lockette, Chad Hall and Joe Hastings. We'll have plenty of time to discuss all the various wide receivers, but Maiocco's article got me thinking, and earlier today I asked a question on Twitter: What would people consider a "successful" year 2 for A...

49ers draft pick Quinton Patton meets with media

Niners Nation — The San Francisco 49ers did some solid work adding offensive weapons on Saturday, as they used the fourth round to add wide receiver Quinton Patton and running back Marcus Lattimore. While there is a good chance Lattimore could spend the season on the PUP list, Patton will get a chance to compete at wide receiver right away. The 49ers have a fairly full wide receiver corps, but after Michael Crabtree and Anquan Boldin, playing time is very much up in the air. The 49ers drafted A.J. Jenkins last year, but after Crabtree and Boldin, nobody's job is safe. Patton had a chance to chat with ...

49ers salary cap: Colin Kaepernick and the mighty QB contract

Niners Nation — We're back for another round of contract discussion. We opened the topic by discussing potential extensions for Anthony Davis and Mike Iupati. Not too long after, Davis was signed to an extension. We followed that up a week ago with a look at Michael Crabtree. Unfortunately that was not followed by a contract extension. Such is life. Today we begin the discussion of three key free agents who cannot sign extensions for another year. The current collective bargaining agreement sacrificed rookies both with a rookie wage scale and with limitations on when they can start signing contract ex...

49ers salary cap: Michael Crabtree future contract comparisons

Niners Nation — Last week, I began our look at upcoming 49ers free agents. I opened the series by looking at offensive tackle Anthony Davis and offensive guard Mike Iupati. Not long after that article, Davis signed a five-year contract extension. Maybe these articles can provide some help in getting more deals done! I want to continue this series with WR Michael Crabtree, who is also scheduled to hit free agency after the 2014 season. Once again, I will take a look at comparables in the recent offseason. Crabtree will likely look for contract terms in the range of what Vincent Jackson, Dwayne Bowe, Gr...

San Francisco 49ers Sign Offensive Tackle Anthony Davis To Five-Year Extension

Cincy Jungle — According to reports surfacing Friday morning, the San Francisco 49ers have signed offensive tackle Anthony Davis to a five-year extension worth $37.295 million, which includes $17 million in guarantees. Much like what the Bengals Bengals are hoping for, the 49ers are looking to retain their younger core players, including guys like Aldon Smith, Michael Crabtree and Colin Kaepernick in the next year or two. Why is this relevant? Davis started 16 games at right tackle for the 49ers, graded much stronger as a run blocker than pass protector, allowing nine quarterback sacks and 31 pressur...
