Grading the 49ers’ offensive line: Past and present

The San Francisco 49ers had the best offensive line in the NFL when they played in the Super Bowl a couple of years ago. Here’s how I grade that offensive line player by player: LT Joe Staley: A. The best offensive tackle in the league in 2012. LG Mike Iupati: A-. One of the best […]

NFL free agency: Mike Iupati contract numbers in, cap hit is reasonable for guard

The newly signed guard gets a lot of money in Year 1. It took a while, but the salary numbers are finally in for newly signed free agent guard Mike Iupati. He joined the Arizona Cardinals, signing a five-year, $40 million contract. In Year 1, Iupati gets $11.5 million in actual money. He received a $6 million signing bonus. He will receive a $4 million signing bonus this year. He will make $1.5 million in actual salary in 2015. What that means is his 2015 salary cap hit isn't much -- $6.7 million. His cap hit in 2016 actually goes down to $5.7 million. His salary will be $4.5 million and...

Mike Iupati proves injury reports likely a little bogus

Interesting info from Mike Iupati at his intro press conference. The Arizona Cardinals introduced Mike Iupati on Wednesday, and his media sessions revealed something rather interesting. Iupati said he played through a broken foot last year, impacted pass protection. — Darren Urban (@Cardschatter) March 11, 2015 I suppose the foot injury could impact his pass protection last season, but it's not like he had a history of great pass protection before that. While he has always been a great run blocker, his pass protection has left something to be desired. And for Drew Stanton and Carson...

Mike Iupati played with bad foot in 2014, and a look at his pass protection numbers

He insinuates his health was a big reason why his pass protection wasn't better. The Arizona Cardinals have landed one of the best run blocking guards in the NFL in signing Mike Iupati to a five-year contract. However, he has been criticized for his pass protection. Some, included myself, have looked at his grades and have noticed the difference there is between when he was protecting Colin Kaepernick and when he had Alex Smith behind him at quarterback. Iupati suggested something different. It was his health, at least in 2014. In his introductory press conference for the team, he mentioned...

Golden Nuggets: Free Agency craziness continues

Thursday, March 12, 2015 edition of the Golden Nuggets, a daily compilation of 49ers links from around the web. Good morning everyone. What a crazy week this has been. I want to take a moment to talk about what I saw dubbed in the links today as "Black Monday." It was maybe the largest compilation of terrible news the 49ers have ever had crammed into one day. The news broke on the retirement of my favorite 49er of this generation, Patrick Willis. That was followed in quick succession by reports seeming to confirm the departing free agents. Mike Iupati is gone and Michael Crabtree looks all...

Iupati's deal is for five years, Peters' is for three and Weatherspoon's is for one year. While the Cardinals do not announce the terms of their contracts, Iupati's is reportedly for $40 million. Peters' deal is reportedly for $9 million, with incentives that could make it worth up to $11.25 million. Weatherspoon's is expected to be between $3 and $4...

Torrey Smith 5-year $40 million deal likely offsets Mike Iupati 5-year, $40 million deal for comp picks

The San Francisco 49ers will need a new left guard, as Mike Iupati has departed for the Arizona Cardinals. We break down comp pick implications. The San Francisco 49ers appear to have a wash in the early going when it comes to comp picks. Reports have the team signing Torrey Smith to a 5-year, $40 million contract, with $22 million in guaranteed money. This follows the news that Mike Iupati signed a similar deal with the Arizona Cardinals. Iupati reportedly gets $22.5 million in guaranteed money. Obviously guaranteed money can mean just about anything, whether it be injury guarantees, full...

James Carpenter signing is a head scratcher for Jets

A few takeaways on former Seattle Seahawks guard James Carpenter signing with the New York Jets: 1. General manager Mike Maccagnan wanted to come out of free agency with a starting guard. He shot for the stars, bidding for Mike Iupati and Orlando Franklin, but settled for the moon. Carpenter, a surprise first-round pick in 2011, hasn't lived up to expectations. He raised his game the last two years, elevating his value somewhat, but we're still talking about a player with holes in his game.

Mike Iupati Plans To Sign For The Arizona Cardinals

It seems as though the Jets will have to look elsewhere for help on the offensive line. According to multiple reports, pro bowl guard Mike Iupati will sign a deal with the Arizona Cardinals. The Jets were believed to be very interested in the former San Francisco 49'ers player but he elected to stay on the west coast with the Cardinals. This is a blow to the Jets as the top two rated guards, Iupati and Franklin are slated to sign elsewhere. The Jets will turn their attention to Clint Boling and James Carpenter. Boling is by far the more attractive proposition, however according to Rich...

Free-agent update: Jets miss Iupati, could settle for Carpenter

Catching you up on the last few hours of New York Jets' developments: 1. The Jets lost one of their top targets at guard, as former Pro Bowl selection Mike Iupati is slated to sign with the Arizona Cardinals, according to multiple reports. The fallback option is James Carpenter, a former first-round pick of the Seattle Seahawks. Carpenter has had conditioning and durability issues throughout his career, which probably explains why the Seahawks didn't exercise their fifth-year option.
