Ray-Ray Armstrong feels good, does not think he will need to miss offseason workout program

The 49ers inside linebacker spoke to the media on Tuesday following practice. We have a full transcript. The San Francisco 49ers seemed to have their man next to NaVorro Bowman at the start of the 2016 season, with Ray-Ray Armstrong emerging as a viable option. Unfortunately, he suffered a season ending pectoral injury in Week 2. That was followed two weeks later by NaVorro Bowman’s season-ending Achilles injury, leaving the 49ers to rotate Gerald Hodges, Michael Wilhoite, and Nick Bellore at inside linebacker. Armstrong is a free agent after this season. The 49ers will likely consider...

O’Neil addresses changes to 49ers’ improved run defense

ORLANDO - After allowing an NFL-record seven straight 100-yard rushers, the 49ers have held two of their past three opponents to under 100 yards on the ground. Today, defensive coordinator Jim O’Neil was asked if Baalke’s assessment was correct. O’Neil said changes had been made to assist an inside linebacker corps decimated by the loss of NaVorro Bowman and Ray-Ray Armstrong to season-ending injuries. Outside linebacker Eli Harold (toe), wide receiver Quinton Patton (concussion) and defensive lineman Ronald Blair (undisclosed) were not participating at the start of...

Quinton Patton (concussion), Shayne Skov (knee) ruled OUT for remainder of 49ers-Dolphins

We break down two notable injuries from Week 12. The San Francisco 49ers have suffered a pair of injuries impacting their offense and special teams. Linebacker Shayne Skov suffered a knee injury on a return, while wide receiver Quinton Patton suffered a concussion trying to make a tackle after an interception. Rod Streater replaced Patton in the lineup. Skov is one of the 49ers core special teamers, but also serves as a reserve for an inside linebacker unit that is lacking in depth following injuries to NaVorro Bowman and Ray-Ray Armstrong. Patton has been the 49ers leading receiver since...

Chip Kelly offers update on NaVorro Bowman injury rehab

Bowman, who has been sorely missed since his injury, has been at the 49ers facility San Francisco 49ers head coach Chip Kelly had his usual press conference previewing the next matchup, the Miami Dolphins, on Wednesday morning. During his availability he was asked about the status of Navorro Bowman, following his Achilles surgery. Kelly gave an update that Bowman is still wearing a walking boot but is not using crutches to get around any longer. He has been at the facility every day rehabbing and has been interacting with the team in the locker room. It’s good to know that Bowman is in...

49ers-Cardinals recap: San Francisco snaps streak of allowing 100-yard rushers

There was one positive from Sunday’s loss to the Cardinals. Arizona Cardinals running back David Johnson failed to eclipse the 100-yard rushing mark against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. That’s notable for the fact that the 49ers had allowed a 100-yard rusher in their past seven games. Johnson was part of that streak, when he put up over 150 yards against the 49ers in Week 5. The 49ers do not have a strong defense. They do not have a good defensive coordinator, in my humble opinion. They do not have a good run defense even when NaVorro Bowman is on the field. Arik Armstead,...

Are the 49ers lacking defensive leaders?

With NaVorro Bowman out with an injury, are the 49ers having trouble finding someone to rally behind? Earlier this week, Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians spoke with the Bay Area media on a conference call, and we have a transcript of that call right here. One thing that I noticed, with a hat tip to Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury News, is a line about losing a leader on defense in NaVorro Bowman. “They obviously miss NaVorro,” Arians said. “And when you lose leaders, that’s very hard — the guys that rally the huddle.” It’s true that Bowman stepped into a leadership...
