The Ryan Mathews Chronicles: New Orleans Saints Edition

Bolts From The Blue — In my last Ryan Mathews post, We took a look at a few cherry-picked examples to show how many yards Ryan will, at times, leave on the field. The post admittedly didn't go into enough detail on the yards Ryan is able to manufacture on his own. With this in mind, we'll take a different approach to the next game on the schedule, the New Orleans game. The "nice" thing about this game is that Ryan was firmly entrenched in Norv Turner's doghouse for fumbling problems. Despite clearly being most talented player on the field, Norv gave Mathews so few touches that it is possible to break down e...

Chargers GM expects RB Ryan Mathews to be a 'playmaker'

FFToolbox.com — During a conference call with season-ticket holding fans, San Diego Chargers general manager Tom Telesco had many positive and optimistic things to say about running back Ryan Mathews. "A great kid" who "works extremely hard" and "big things" are expected from him. Telesco also added that they upgraded their offensive line in order to benefit both Mathews and the recently acquired Danny Woodhead. FANTASY ANALYSIS: A GM likes his running back. A real shocker, right? Well the question is, do they have any other choice in the matter? San Diego has four other backs on the roster right now, exclud...

Football Sunday Collector: Melvin Ingram, San Diego Chargers 2012 1st-Round Pick, 18th Overall

Bolts From The Blue — I'm looking back at last year's 1st round draft pick for this weeks The Football Sunday Collector post. Last year the San Diego Chargers selected Melvin Ingram, a pick I was very excited about. I don't follow all that many college players but. lucky for me, Ingram (and Ryan Mathews before him) were on my radar. 2012 Panini NFL Draft #16 (16/25) It's always cool to pick up a relic card, whether it be of a jersey or a piece of football, when there's more than one solid color in the swatch. It's not much, but that strip of the powder-blue at the right edge is why I picked this car...

Bolts and Nuts: Ryan Mathews

Bolts From The Blue — Our researchers continue to pour through the communications records of the Chargers players and staff last year, bringing in revelation after revelation. What went wrong? How did things get so bad so quickly? This week, we target running back Ryan Mathews. No need for super-spy cloak and dagger trickery here. No need for any expert hacking, either. We just asked him, and he was a nice enough guy to give the records to us. We Aren't Naming Names Here...Could be Dr. Nick Riviera Well, He DID Fumble the Very Next Game It is like counting the shards of a broken stained glass wi...

Ryan Mathews: The Tale of the Tape

Bolts From The Blue — Something about Ryan rubs me the wrong way. It's not his injuries - those happen. It's not his physicality - he's naturally as talented as anyone I've watched play the game. So what it is? It's Ryan's head. As a recovering World of Warcraft player (I know, I know...but I played college ball, too,) I truly find it hard to believe that Ryan could ostensibly be so good at a game that involves so much thinking, planning and strategy. Because he displays NONE of this on the football field. [NERD JERK ALERT: Hope you've all seen the infamous "LEEEERROOOOYYYY JEEENKINS" video. It's hilarious ...

Should Ryan Mathews Stop Lifting Weights?

Bolts From The Blue — I don't often say things with no statistical backing at all, so stay with me on this one.... Ryan Mathews doesn't look like a Running Back to me anymore. Story #1: I remember going to Chargers Park and standing on the sidelines behind Peter King during one of Mathews' first practices as an NFL player. I overheard King talking to someone else, who was asking him what he thought of the San Diego Chargers' first round draft pick. Peter's response was something to the effect of "I've never seen a rookie walk in with an NFL body before I saw him. That's impressive." What Peter meant is tha...

Mathews says a mouthful

CBSSports.com Fantasy — Saying the Chargers "needed" a fresh start, running back Ryan Mathews appeared on multiple NFL Network shows Friday to talk about his role on the team and his health. Referring to last season Mathews said the Chargers got "complacent" under Norv Turner and fell into a routine. The new coaching staff should change that and Mathews said he's looking forward to it. He also said that because of the new staff he doesn't "consider myself the No. 1 guy right now," adding that he has to prove himself."It's time. I've had flashes of good and I've had flashes of bad. This is something I need to do. I ne...

McCoy still counting on Mathews

CBSSports.com Fantasy — Chargers coach Mike McCoy said in an interview with CBSSports.com on Tuesday at the NFL owners meeting in Phoenix that he's still counting on running back Ryan Mathews this season to play a prominent role even with the addition of Danny Woodhead. "Ryan’s had some bad luck with collarbones," McCoy said. "That’s all part of the game. You can’t do anything about that. I don’t know how you strengthen your collarbones. He’s had some bad luck the past couple of years. He’s going to be a great fit for this system. Give him the ball as many times as he can carry it in a game. And get him more involved...

Woodhead signs with Chargers

FFToday — RB to play complementary role to Ryan Mathews Another former New England Patriot is heading to the AFC West. Running back Danny Woodhead signed a two-year contract with the San Diego Chargers, the team announced Friday. Woodhead follows slot receiver Wes Welker to the AFC West after Welker formally signed with the Denver Broncos on Thursday. Woodhead, 28, had 301 rushing yards and 446 receiving yards for the Patriots in 2012 as well as seven total touchdowns. (USA Today) FF Today's Take: Woodhead teetered on the edge of fantasy relevancy this past season in New England, and cou...
