THE THING is, Ryan Mathews is really good. That was vividly apparent in the Eagles' Saturday and Sunday training camp practices. There was no tackling, but Mathews looked smooth and swift, gliding effortlessly around end, making sharp cuts up the gut.

It's only been pointed out a thousand times that the Eagles don't have a great running back situation heading into the 2016 season. Fifth round pick Wendell Smallwood desperately needs to improve in pass protection. Undrafted rookie Byron Marshall missed all of the Eagles' spring practices. Fellow UDFA running back Cedric O'Neal wasn't even listed on the top 1000 NFL draft prospects as ranked by CBS Sports. The one wildcard in the Eagles' backfield, if...

NOBODY DISPUTES that Ryan Mathews has the talent to replace DeMarco Murray as the Eagles' go-to running back. It seemed painfully obvious to fans that when both backs were healthy last season, Mathews was much more effective. He averaged 5.08 yards per carry, fourth-best in the league. That's a good part of why Murray is in Tennessee now.

Not exactly shocking. The Philadelphia Eagles haven't even had their first full team training camp practice yet and starting running back Ryan Mathews is already dealing with an injury issue. The Eagles announced they placed Mathews on the active/non-football injury list. Mathews suffered an ankle injury last week while training for training camp. This news hardly comes as a surprise because Mathews has dealt with a number of injuries throughout his career. As Jimmy Kempski points out, he's appeared on the injury report a total of 53 times from 2010 through 2015. The good news for Mathews...
