How will Ryan Mathews fit in a crowded Eagles backfield?

Get to know the Eagles' new RB from the perspective of a San Diego Chargers writer. The Eagles weren't merely content with signing top free agent running back DeMarco Murray. Chip Kelly also wanted to add former first round pick Ryan Mathews to his rushing attack. But how will Kelly split up the carries in a crowded backfield that also features veteran rusher Darren Sproles? We asked this and more to John Gennaro of Bolts from the Blue. Here are his answers to my questions. 1) What was the reaction to the Chargers not re-signing Ryan Mathews? Meh. Ryan has always had crazy,...

LeSean McCoy says Eagles made a "panic move" by signing DeMarco Murray and Ryan Mathews

Count LeSean McCoy as one of those in the crowd of people who don't seem to be confused by Chip Kelly's offseason plan. The former Eagles running back recently appeared in an interview on The Rich Eisen Show. McCoy touched on several topics, but his take on the Eagles' running back situation was most interesting. "I saw that they originally were trying to get Frank Gore, and he backed out. So then when they got DeMarco and they got Ryan Mathews, I thought it was like a panic move. "With that media in Philadelphia, they can get tough on you. So I guess that was just the way to make it...

Mathews says he's fine with Murray coming here as well

Ryan Mathews, who looked to be the Eagles' feature back very briefly there, met reporters Thursday after agreeing to a three-year, $11.5 million contract. But many of the reporters were there because the Eagles also are reported to have signed a bigger star, Dallas free agent RB DeMarco Murray.

Ryan Mathews will sign with Eagles, despite DeMarco Murray deal

Two veteran backs will replace LeSean McCoy. The Eagles will have both Ryan Mathews and DeMarco Murray on the roster this season. Mathews will still sign a three-year, $11.5 million deal with the Eagles, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The Eagles will now have a three-headed monster heading into Chip Kelly's third season as head coach. Murray, Mathews and Darren Sproles will probably be considered the best trio of backs in the league and likely make the Eagles an even more run-dominant offense. The team has spent a boatload of money over the last two seasons on the position and...

Ryan Mathews to join DeMarco Murray with Philadelphia Eagles, per Adam Schefter

The San Francisco 49ers were connected to running back Ryan Mathews, but it appears he is going to be off the market. The Philadelphia Eagles apparently need more running backs. The Philadelphia Eagles are going for quite the running back depth. ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting the team will sign Ryan Mathews, after earlier word that they will also sign DeMarco Murray. That's certainly something. I was just writing this article as a "Ian Rapoport says 49ers and Raiders are teams to watch with Ryan Mathews", but obviously that is out the door. Jason Cole had previously suggested a...

Eagles Free Agency Rumors: Chip Kelly wants both DeMarco Murray and Ryan Mathews

For more news and rumors on the Eagles free agent moves, check out our Eagles 2015 free agency rumor tracker. Will the Eagles sign DeMarco Murray, who is visiting Philadelphia on Thursday? Or will they just keep Ryan Mathews, who is also visiting and has agreed to terms but hasn't officially signed? According to former Eagles scout John Middlekauff, it might not come down to one or the other. It could be both. "I've been told from multiple people the Eagles trying to sign Murray has no impact on signing Ryan Mathews. Chip wants them both." Adam Schefter mentioned this possibility...

Philadelphia Eagles' game is now more than a bluff

IRVING, Texas -- If the Philadelphia Eagles are just trying to drive up the price of DeMarco Murray for the Dallas Cowboys, they are putting on a great bluff. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Murray will fly to Philadelphia on Thursday to meet with the Eagles, who signed Ryan Mathews on Thursday and already have Pro Bowler Darren Sproles on the roster. Murray started Wednesday off by calling Eagles coach Chip Kelly. When the Eagles introduced Sam Bradford, the quarterback said he had been lobbying his former Oklahoma roommate and teammate to come with him to Philadelphia.
