Pro Football Focus Projects Cowboys As No. 2 NFC Seed in 2017

But that No. 2 seed may be a lot more tightly contested than the Cowboys would like. Early in the offseason, the Cowboys told fans that the emphasis of the offseason was to upgrade the defense. But then they let seven defensive players walk in free agency (Brandon Carr, Morris Claiborne, Barry Church, J.J. Wilcox, Terrell McClain, Jack Crawford, Ryan Davis) who had accounted for 33% of all defensive snaps and 37% of all starts on defense in 2016. Early Projection of the Dallas Cowboys Starting Defense

After losing Terrell McClain, Barry Church, Morris Claiborne, Brandon Carr, and J.J. Wilcox to free agency, the Cowboys had a lot of work to do to rebuild this defense. Adding Taco Charlton, Stephen Paea, Nolan Carroll, Chidobe Awuzie, Xavier Woods, Jourdan Lewis, and Marquez White to the mix was quite the start. Plus Jaylon Smith and Charles Tapper. In early March, the Dallas Cowboys signed veteran defensive tackle Stephen Paea – seemingly replacing the starting 1T DT from 2016 in a finally healthy Terrell McClain. McClain’s 40 tackles and 2.5 sacks with the Cowboys earned him a new contract with the rival Redskins, and also made last year’s free agent signing of the Eagles’ Cedric Thornton seemingly pointless. Thornton had his flashes, but the converted 3-4 defensive lineman that is under contract through 2019 saw just 27.5% of the team’s defensive snaps on the season over 13 games played. The production from the interior of...
