Bulger looks good in leading the offense

Ravens Central | Baltimore Sun — On the second day of training camp, veteran backup quarterback Marc Bulger turned in an impressive performance. The day before, Bulger played like a quarterback learning the system often throwing behind receivers. In the morning session today Bulger made some really strong throws, including connecting on some tight throws over the receivers' back shoulder. Bulger has a quick delivering and release. Clearly in two days, he has increased the gap between himself and Troy Smith for the backup position. In fact, Bulger looked just as good as starter Joe Flacco even though Flacco has played well i...

Cameron: Determining No. 3 QB won't be difficult

Ravens Central | Baltimore Sun — With Marc Bulger taking the field for the first time Tuesday, the Ravens have begun evaluating who should be their No. 3 quarterback: Troy Smith or John Beck? Some say it could be a tough choice, but not offensive coordinator Cam Cameron. "It’s not as complicated as everybody thinks,” Cameron said. ”We’ve got a lot of practice left, a lot of reps in practice. You just watch every drill, watch every practice, watch through the preseason games. It usually clarifies itself and is usually pretty obvious.” But if it isn't obvious ... “John [Harbaugh, Ravens coach] and Ozzie [Newsome, general m...

Troy Smith takes Marc Bulger addition in stride

Ravens Central | Baltimore Sun — Ravens backup quarterback Troy Smith took some time Wednesday at Ed Reed's youth football camp at Randallstown High School to address the recent addition of Marc Bulger, who is expected to be the team's No. 2 quarterback. He seemed to take the acquisition in stride. "I'm proud to have another teammate. He's definitely a good guy. I've been a fan of his for a while. That side of what's going on, I can't control," Smith said. On whether he was disappointed by Bulger's signing, Smith said he looks forward to the competition among quarterbacks for their spot on the depth chart. "Everybody ge...

Reed comments on Bulger

Ravens Central | Baltimore Sun — Ravens Pro Bowl safety Ed Reed, speaking on 105.7 FM Tuesday, weighed in on the team’s recent acquisition of quarterback Marc Bulger, who is expected to be Joe Flacco's top backup, saying that Troy Smith would be more than qualified to lead the team to an NFL championship if he were called upon. Bulger is “just another guy that’s been in the league and been around," Reed said, adding that recently acquired defensive back Ken Hamlin "adds depth to the secondary." With Smith moving further down the depth chart, there is talk about his going to another team. Smith, though, has downplayed the...

Flacco wonders how Bulger will affect QB chemistry

Ravens Central | Baltimore Sun — Joe Flacco is unsure how the addition of new backup Marc Bulger will affect the chemistry of the quarterback group. Flacco said it’s been an enjoyable experience working with quarterbacks Troy Smith and John Beck. But the recent signing of Bulger likely means Smith or Beck will get cut at the end of the preseason. There’s a chance that both won’t make it past the final cutdown. While Flacco believes Bulger will be “a great backup,” he is wondering whether there will be some uneasiness amongst the quarterbacks. “Hopefully, we just all get along well,” Flacco said over the weekend. “When you ...

Troy Smith: 'I can't control any of that stuff'

Ravens Central | Baltimore Sun — In an interview with Pro Football Weekly, reserve quarterback Troy Smith said he has heard the reports of a possible trade to the Philadelphia Eagles but he couldn't shed any more light on the situation. "I can't control any of that stuff," Smith said at teammate Tom Zbikowski's sports clinic. "I can only do what's in my power to get better as a quarterback and fine-tune my skills and abilities." Asked if he was "intrigued" by the possibility of the trade, Smith said, "I've never been through a situation like this, so it's all brand-new to me. I can't say that it isn't (intriguing). Even tho...

  • Brooks has strong group of D-linemen Ravens Central | Baltimore Sun If you get a chance to go out to training camp, it's always a treat to watch coach Clarence Brooks work with the defensive line. It's a good, competitive group and the instruction and language is always colorful. Both starting defensive tackles -- Haloti Ngata and Kelly Gregg -- appear to be in great shape. Keep an eye on defensive tackle Lamar Divens, in his third season out of Tennessee State. He is a load, and brings it. While defensive end Paul Kruger has added 25 pounds from a year ago, he still needs to work on staying low and using better technique. As for rookie tackle Terrence ...

  • McGahee off to good start in camp Ravens Central | Baltimore Sun Backup running back Willis McGahee looks strong so far in training camp, and appears to have spent a lot of time in the weight room. McGahee doesn't appear to be carrying any extra weight, and shows good acceleration, and has been breaking a lot of tackles. He hasn't complained about a thing, and appears to be ready for the regular season. After breaking some long runs in the first two days, McGahee doesn't even appear to be breathing hard. McGahee, though, needs to work on holding the ball tighter. Two rookie running backs that have been impressive are fullback Mike McLaughlin, out of Bost...
