Eric Mangini and the 2005 Patriots defense: What happened?

Consider: Those injury ravaged Patriots started 45 players during the 2005 season, an NFL record for a division champion (the 10-6 Patriots won the AFC East and lost a divisional-playoff game to Denver). Mangini used 23 different defensive starters, including 13 starters at the four spots in the secondary. That secondary was already without cornerback Ty Law, a four-time Pro Bowler with the Patriots from 1995-2004 who had been released in the offseason for salary-cap reasons.
