One of the deals involves the Patriots, sending offensive tackle Marcus Cannon to the Dolphins in exchange for defensive tackle Jared Odrick. As Field notes, a deal within the division is unusual, but that's how the Patriots acquired receiver Wes Welker in 2007. The team also made a draft-day swap with Miami in 2003, sending a third-round pick to the Dolphins for a second-rounder the following year.

The Patriots were awarded a fourth-round compensatory draft pick by the NFL, which is a higher selection than many analysts had projected.Compensatory picks are based on a formula using the net loss of free agents from the previous season.
