Battle Red Radio: 2049

Matt Weston, BFD, and our old friend Diehard Chris break down the win over Cleveland and squash some Blade Runner beef at 7 p.m. CDT. The Texans’ win over the Browns was pretty baseline. All of our cells are intact. Our fingers are interlocked. The Texans did what they needed to do, put the pieces together against an easy opponent, and head to the bye week 3-3. Matt, bigfatdrunk, and Diehard Chris review the latest Texans’ win and squash some beef LIVE at 7 p.m. CDT tonight. Topics include how the Texans attempted to replace J.J. Watt and Whitney Mercilus, Johnathan Joseph and Kareem...

2017 NFL Power Rankings (Week 7): Bye Week Battle for Position

2017 NFL Power Rankings (Week 7): Bye Week Battle for Position

Where do the Texans stand going into the bye? After a win against the Browns in which the Texans scored more than 30 points in their fourth consecutive game, the Texans head into their bye in unfamiliar territory, a Top 2 scoring offense. Their offensive skills lead by passing touchdown leader Deshaun Watson warrants high marks in the Power Rankings, but it has not been forgotten that this team has not been bit by the injury bug but completely swallowed by it. No J.J. Watt, no Whitney Mercilus for the year, and Kevin Johnson and Dylan Cole are out for a couple weeks. This is a different...

Snap Counts: Texans v. Browns

Snap Counts: Texans v. Browns

Take a look at the snap stats from Week Six. This is a very special and very important week of “Snap Counts.” It is the first week the Texans have played without J.J. Watt and Whitney Mercilus this season. The Browns game should offer a glimpse of how the Texans plan to move on without their two defensive stars on the front seven. Offensively, Julie’n Davenport is still getting some sixth offensive tackle snaps. It’s a very sweet and nice way to slowly bring him along from the Patriot League to the NFL. 67% Lamar Miller to 35% D’Onta Foreman is a great ratio. Bill O’Brien...

Texans defense adjusts to big-name absences

The Texans' defense is playing without four starters who were first-round picks -- J.J. Watt (injury), outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus (injury), inside linebacker Brian Cushing (suspension) and cornerback Kevin Johnson (injury) – who began the season.

Incompletions: Texans v. Browns (Big And Easy)

Incompletions: Texans v. Browns (Big And Easy)

With so much to write and talk about after every game, and not enough time for one person to write about it all, the masthead joins together and writes about a flawless victory over the Browns. Matt Weston They are gone. They aren’t coming back. You have to learn to not think about them no matter how casually they come slithering inside your head, to not sit in the residue of memories that once occurred, to not go back and place your feet in Earth that already has your impressions. The Texans’ biggest strength, their front seven, is decimated without J.J. Watt and Whitney Mercilus....

Houston Texans: Rookie DT Carlos Watkins flourishes in his debut

The Houston Texans had a lot of positives against a hopeless Cleveland Browns team but a key component was the success of rookie defensive tackle Carlos Watkins. The Houston Texans had to do a lot of mix-and-matching to fill the void of the losses of J.J. Watt and Whitney Mercilus.  Those are not easy shoes […] Houston Texans: Rookie DT Carlos Watkins flourishes in his debut - House of Houston - House of Houston - A Houston Sports Site - Texans, Rockets, Astros, Dynamo, Cougars and More!

Texans' defense steps up without J.J. Watt, Whitney Mercilus

The absence of defensive end J.J. Watt and outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus will be felt all season. However, the Texans' defense didn't struggle in their first game without the two standouts. They had four sacks in a win over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. The Browns didn't score an offensive touchdown until the final minutes when the Texans had already substituted liberally.

2017 Houston Texans Gameday Live: Texans vs Browns (First Quarter)

Enjoy the beginning of Houston’s matchup against Cleveland here at Battle Red Blog. Woo! It’s here. It’s finally here. Texans. Browns. The game everyone has been dying for. Hopefully the defense is maybe decent without Whitney Mercilus and J.J. Watt in the lineup. This is your open thread for the first quarter. Enjoy. NOTE: Please do not post any images, videos, GIFs, or non-text comments in any of BRB's live game threads. They tend to slow the thread down and can take a long time to load. Thanks in advance for your cooperation. NOTE II: Due to the fast-paced nature of these...

Street Clothes Special: Texans - Browns

Street Clothes Special: Texans - Browns

Who’s on the bench today? See inside. The Texans begin their post-J.J. Watt and Whitney Mercilus season today, against the Cleveland Browns. The Browns are 0-5, and just switched from Deshone Kizer to Kevin Hogan at quarterback, but that doesn’t mean they’ll roll over. The training staff for the Houston Texans continue to be some of the busiest people on Kirby. A total of 17 players made the injury report this week, the most so far. ILB Ben Heeney (knee), CB Kevin Johnson (knee), S Corey Moore (concussion), and RB Jordan Todman (calf) have already been ruled out. C Greg Mancz (knee),...

Texans-Browns Regular Season 2017: Schedule, Game Time, TV Channel, Radio, And Online Streaming

Texans-Browns Regular Season 2017: Schedule, Game Time, TV Channel, Radio, And Online Streaming

Here’s what you need to know about how to see what the Texans’ defense looks like without J.J. Watt and Whitney Mercilus on Sunday. Dejected as we may be by the absence of Whitney Mercilus and J.J. Watt from the rest of the NFL season, the 2017 campaign of your Houston Texans rolls on. This week, the Cleveland Browns come to NRG Stadium. Deshaun Watson is surely eager to show Hue Jackson what the Browns missed out on by deciding to pass on the Clemson star in the 2017 NFL Draft, and I imagine the Texans are glad to come along for the ride. Here’s what you need to know about...

Battle Red Blog On the Radio: Orange And Brown Weekly

Matt Weston talks about the Texans-Browns game on Orange and Brown Weekly. I don’t know about you but I hate the sound of my own voice. Maybe you aren’t like me and enjoy the sound of my voice. If you do want to hear me talk for a bit with Mike Young, who I thought was Michael Young for a split second when his name popped in my inbox which was the greatest moment of my entire life, I was on Orange and Brown weekly earlier this week to preview the Texans Browns game. There I previewed the matchup, talked about Deshaun Watson, the losses of Whitney Mercilus and J.J. Watt, why I think the...

Browns to face injury-weakened Texans defense

Browns to face injury-weakened Texans defense

The Houston Texans lost two key members of their defense to injuries in Week 5. Can that open the door for the Browns to earn their first victory of the season? Kevin Hogan is the new starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, and he appears to have caught somewhat of a break in his 2017 debut. Set to face the venerable Houston Texans defense, Hogan will at least not have to avoid the pressure from two of the team’s most highly-regarded pass-rushers. Defensive end J.J. Watt and linebacker Whitney Mercilus have both been placed on injured reserve, according to Texans coach Bill...

Texans' Jadeveon Clowney likely to be focal point for blockers

In the wake of season-ending injuries to defensive end J.J. Watt and outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus, there's a strong likelihood that Pro Bowl hybrid pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney will become a marked man.

Checking The Pulse: Will The Texans Win The AFC South?

Checking The Pulse: Will The Texans Win The AFC South?

Tell me how you feel. The Texans’ football team looks to have flip-flopped with the loss of J.J. Watt and Whitney Mercilus. A team led by its front seven will now probably be a team led by its offense and rookie superstar, and greatest quarterback of all time, Deshaun Watson. With thise change in team dynamics, it’s hard to know what to think. Nobody has seen a Houston team attempt to win because of its offense since 2010. The replacement players for Watt and Mercilus are pick and pull parts, doors and radiators taken from rusted and scrapped Hondas. There isn’t a set of talented to...
