Evaluating Kyle Shanahan’s reason for not throwing deep vs. the Seahawks

During Sunday’s game against the Seahawks, Brian Hoyer threw zero passes more than 20 yards downfield and only two passes more than 10 yards downfield. I asked Kyle Shanahan during his Monday conference call why Hoyer never threw deep. Here’s what Shanahan said: “We had a couple shots early and the protection didn’t hold up, and it’s basically what they are giving to you. If you sit back and try...

Kyle Shanahan ‘pleased’ with Laken Tomlinson’s Week 2 performance, progress

Kyle Shanahan ‘pleased’ with Laken Tomlinson’s Week 2 performance, progress

Laken Tomlinson’s mistakes against the Seahawks were minor and he’s likely got the starting job locked down. San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said that Laken Tomlinson played well against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 2. Tomlinson was acquired just a couple weeks prior to that game, and didn’t play in Week 1 due to his lack of familiarity with the system. Tomlinson took part in 48 of 49 offensive snaps against the Seahawks. He allowed two hurries against the Seahawks, according to Pro Football Focus. He wasn’t perfect, but he was significantly better than Zane Beadles....

Did the Seahawks bench Thomas Rawls in the second half against the 49ers? And should Chris Carson win the job?

Did the Seahawks bench Thomas Rawls in the second half against the 49ers? And should Chris Carson win the job?

Although Seattle’s rookie tailback had superior numbers in the win Sunday, that may not mean Carson will be the lead runner going forward One of the big storylines before the Seattle Seahawks played the San Francisco 49ers Sunday was how Eddie Lacy was a healthy scratch. By the end of the game, one of the big storylines was how Thomas Rawls, the starter displacing Lacy, also became an apparently healthy scratch after halftime. Chris Carson carried a starter’s share of the rushes on the day, running the ball 20 times compared to Rawls’s five carries. Carson also contributed one catch...

Can you hear the whistle as Frank Clark crushes Brian Hoyer after the timeout?

Can you hear the whistle as Frank Clark crushes Brian Hoyer after the timeout?

I hear a whistle, but I’m not sure if it was early enough to stop Clark’s big hit. There was a rather odd play on Sunday in the third quarter of the San Francisco 49ers 12-9 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. With 12:20 left in the quarter, Daniel Kilgore hiked the ball to Brian Hoyer, but the whistle attempted to blow the play dead. However, Frank Clark kept on going and got a big hit on Hoyer. If you can’t see the video above, click here. Kyle Shanahan managed to get a timeout called right before the play started. He likely saw something in the Seahawks coverage that he didn’t like....

Newsflash: Seahawks expected offensive stars off to extremely slow starts

Newsflash: Seahawks expected offensive stars off to extremely slow starts

Before the season, the expectation of a 1-1 start for the Seattle Seahawks was totally reasonable. A win over the Packers in Lambeau Field would’ve been a minor shock, and a loss to the San Francisco 49ers at home would’ve been a major one. Most of also figured that the Seahawks defense would be outstanding — it is — while the offense should at least be average, even in the face of an offensive line that every defense can’t wait to face. It is not. Though the offensive line is bad, can it carry the blame for all of this: Russell Wilson is completing just 56.1% of his attempts...

49ers vs. Seahawks recap: DeForest Buckner has excellent game

49ers vs. Seahawks recap: DeForest Buckner has excellent game

Buckner got PFF’s Game Ball, while all of Solomon Thomas, Aaron Lynch and others on the defensive line performed very well. The San Francisco 49ers had fairly lacking play from their defensive linemen against the Carolina Panthers in Week 1, but fared much better against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. Specifically, defensive tackle DeForest Buckner and defensive end Solomon Thomas looked good-to-great. Buckner was effective getting after Russell Wilson and was also stout against the run. He had nine pressures and two solo run stops, according to Pro Football Focus, who also gave Buckner...

49ers-Seahawks snap count: Hell of a busy day for the defense

49ers-Seahawks snap count: Hell of a busy day for the defense

The 49ers welcomed back Jimmie Ward, and not a moment too soon. The San Francisco 49ers lost a tough one to the Seattle Seahawks, falling 12-9 on a late Russell Wilson touchdown. The 49ers offense struggled to get going with any consistency, but the defense put together a heck of a performance. They held the Seahawks to the one touchdown, and had several chances to swing this game, if not for a couple missed interceptions. The 49ers gave up the late touchdown to Russell Wilson, but given the amount of work this unit put in, it was an incredibly impressive performance. The 49ers ended up...

NFL Week 2 recap: The NFC West is poop

NFL Week 2 recap: The NFC West is poop

The NFC West might be the ugliest division in football after two weeks of play. After two weeks of play, the NFC West has looked extremely poor. The San Francisco 49ers are at the bottom of that pile with an 0-2 record, while the Seattle Seahawks, Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Rams all sit at 1-1. It’s worth noting, though, that none of those wins were particularly encouraging, fun to watch or good in any way. The Seahawks and 49ers played an incredibly ugly game and Russell Wilson put together a single, solitary heroic drive to give them the victory. They definitely shouldn’t get...

49ers-Seahawks final score: 5 things we learned from the Week 2 loss

49ers-Seahawks final score: 5 things we learned from the Week 2 loss

The 49ers almost sprung the upset in Week 2. We break down some things we learned. The San Francisco 49ers lost a tough one to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 2, losing 12-9 at CenturyLink Field. The 49ers held a lead in the fourth quarter, but the defense was worn down and Russell Wilson was able to take advantage. His scrambling and touchdown pass to Paul Richardson proved the difference. 1. Carlos Hyde remains a heck of a runner The 49ers only consistent offense came from Hyde. He rushed for 102 yards in the first half, and 124 for the game. It was disappointing he did not get more work,...

49ers injury news: Eric Reid to have MRI on Monday

Eric Reid went down with a knee injury twice against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 2. San Francisco 49ers safety Eric Reid left Sunday’s game against the Seahawks with a knee injury. He’s scheduled for an MRI on Monday, as noted by Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area. After leaving the first time, he then returned to the game at the beginning of the third quarter. He hobbled off once after a player and returned ... only to go down again and leave a third and final time. He did not return after that, though he’s been described as having “tweaked” his knee at least three times...

49ers’ Reid scheduled for MRI on injured knee

SEATTLE - A host of 49ers’ starters have sustained serious leg injuries in Seattle in recent years and it appeared safety Eric Reid would join that group Sunday. Reid sustained a non-contact knee injury while covering a deep pass late in the second quarter and stayed on the turf for several minutes in a 12-9 loss to the Seahawks. However, Reid briefly returned to the game after halftime before exiting permanently in the third quarter. “It doesn’t feel too bad,” Reid said. “It just got to the point where I couldn’t run on it any more.” ...

49ers 9, Seahawks 12: Grades

Here are the 49ers’ grades after their 12-9 road loss to the Seattle Seahawks. QUARTERBACK: F. Statistically one of the worst performances we’ve seen from a 49ers quarterback in a long time. Brian Hoyer threw no touchdown passes, one interception, completed just 56 percent of his passes and threw for a mere 99 yards. Ugh! Instead of signing Hoyer, the Niners should have signed Jay Cutler, as I wrote during...

Cigar Thoughts, Week 2: Seahawks, drunk and flatulent, stagger to 12-9 win over the 49ers

Cigar Thoughts, Week 2: Seahawks, drunk and flatulent, stagger to 12-9 win over the 49ers

This game was supposed to be a blowout and, if not that, at least a comfortable victory for the Seahawks. That supposition resulted in making Seattle the biggest favorites in Vegas this week, a 14-point favorite to beat San Francisco, was based on two assumptions: A) the 49ers are bad and B) the Seahawks are good. The former certainly looked to be true last week, but the latter was still in question. These two teams entered this game with zero touchdowns scored between them, a fact the hosts looked sure to erase right off the bat. The Seahawks received the opening kick and embarked on the...

SEATTLE -- Three things you need to know about the 49ers 12-9 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 2 on Sunday:1. Wilson is the differenceThe Seahawks have their franchise quarterback. The 49ers do not. This game came down to one quarterbacks ability to make plays, and the other ones inability to change the game.

49ers-Seahawks: Another bad drop from Marquise Goodwin kills momentum

49ers-Seahawks: Another bad drop from Marquise Goodwin kills momentum

49ers receiver Marquise Goodwin has two huge drops through two games. The San Francisco 49ers probably wouldn’t have beaten the Seattle Seahawks if Marquise Goodwin’s fourth quarter drop was actually caught. They probably wouldn’t have beaten the Carolina Panthers if Goodwin’s early drop was actually caught. But things would have been a lot more interesting. Goodwin, signed this offseason as a free agent to replace Torrey Smith, has seen plenty of looks through two games. He’s also had two brutal drops. The first was an egregious drop against the Panthers that surely would have...

Seahawks move into tie for 1st with win over 49ers: Post-game observations

The Seattle Seahawks picked up their first win of the season, defeating NFC West rival San Francisco 49ers by a score of 12-9. The win was sorely needed but wasn’t pretty, with the offense looking as inept as they did last week in Green Bay for the most part, albeit with the offensive line looking less disastrous. The win puts Seattle at 1-1, level with the Arizona Cardinals and L.A. Rams. Two weeks into the season and there’s still a lot left to learn about this particular Seahawks team -- and they have a lot left to prove. Even still, the win against the 49ers had plenty of...

Seahawks beat 49ers, barely, 12-9: Facebook Live post-game reaction video

Seahawks 12, 49ers 9 It was an ugly win perhaps, but Seattle’s defense had a mostly-dominant performance against the Brian Hoyer-led passing game and Chris Carson is a beast.
