Dallas Domination Awakens New Possibilities for Falcons

Dallas Domination Awakens New Possibilities for Falcons

The Falcons stomped the Cowboys Sunday, adding an unexpected wrinkle to the 2017 season. Let’s not dance around the semantics. The Atlanta Falcons got the paddles of life Sunday. The team practically purchased a plot of land for the 2017 season’s final resting place last week in their boneheaded blunder-fest against the Carolina Panthers, but Sunday, they told the undertaker to take a hike. It’s as if the soul of the 2016 team suddenly repossessed the careening carcass that was once Falcons football – you know, that one that blew a 17-point lead to the lowly Dolphins last month,...

3 takeaways from Falcons vs Cowboys

3 takeaways from Falcons vs Cowboys

Oh man, that was nice. Minus some early blunders, the Falcons looked as good as they have all season in a convincing victory against the Dallas Cowboys. Many will note (rightfully) that Dallas was missing key stars Ezekiel Elliott and Tyron Smith, but this was still an impressive win, regardless. Here are some key takeaways from the 27-7 victory. Offense looked great, but it was still one game This was easily one of the best offensive performances for the Falcons offense in 2017. Matt Ryan was on-point, delivering accurate passes all over the field. The offense finally spread the ball...

3 Falcons up, 3 Falcons down in Week 10 win over Cowboys

3 Falcons up, 3 Falcons down in Week 10 win over Cowboys

The playoffs are still a possibility. The Falcons needed this win. Sitting at 4-4 with their playoff hopes essentially on the line, Atlanta dominated the Dallas Cowboys in a 27-7 rout. Who’s up and who’s down in the win? Up Adrian Clayborn Shocker, right? Clayborn had the most dominant performance in franchise history with a six-sack outing. Backup left tackle Chaz Green was no match as he surrendered five sacks, and Byron Bell came in late in the game and promptly gave up a sack, too. Clayborn also added two forced fumbles — one he recovered himself and the other that was recovered...

Falcons vs. Cowboys recap: Atlanta’s best win of the season means hope for the future

Falcons vs. Cowboys recap: Atlanta’s best win of the season means hope for the future

Atlanta beats the hell out of a depleted Dallas team. I’ll be blunt: Even with Tyron Smith and Ezekiel Elliott out, I was worried the Dallas Cowboys would beat the Atlanta Falcons. Once Atlanta threw an interception on their first series and surrendered an early lead, that worry cemented into an ugly probability in my mind, and I braced for what was coming next. So imagine my surprise when what followed was pure dominance by Atlanta, a 27 point explosion with zero points from Dallas, and a truly historic performance from an underrated defensive end. Imagine my surprise when the Falcons...

Falcons-Cowboys post-game injury report: Devonta Freeman will likely miss multiple weeks

Falcons-Cowboys post-game injury report: Devonta Freeman will likely miss multiple weeks

Fact: Devonta Freeman has a pet goldfish named “Silver” The Atlanta Falcons played a fantastic football game today. Their 27-7 win over the Dallas Cowboys had everything: big plays on offense, Adrian Clayborn’s six sacks, and yet another 50+ field goal by the ageless wonder himself, “Money” Matt Bryant. But Falcons running back Devonta Freeman suffered a significant injury early in the first quarter. Let’s break it down. Devonta Freeman took a hard, helmet to helmet hit on the second offensive play of the game. He got up and wobbled a bit, after which Ed Hochuli made him...

The Atlanta Falcons are top ten in total defense after Week 10

The Atlanta Falcons are top ten in total defense after Week 10

It’s a stunning rank for this team. I don’t know if I believe that the Atlanta Falcons are a top ten defense in the NFL at this exact moment, but regardless of what I believe, the stats suggest they are. Atlanta held the Cowboys to under 300 total yards and just seven points today, which was enough to catapult them from top 15 in total defense to top ten. While they’ve had their fair share of shaky performances, Sunday’s was a dominant one, and there’s no doubt that the talent base is good enough for them to finish at this level. They’ll just have to somehow keep doing this....

Atlanta Falcons 27 - Dallas Cowboys 7 final score: Dominance at last

Atlanta Falcons 27 - Dallas Cowboys 7 final score: Dominance at last

The Falcons were utterly dominant after an early mistake, and move to 5-4. The Atlanta Falcons started this game off in typically frustrating fashion, with a productive Dallas drive stalled not by an interception but by sheer grit, and then an ugly drive that saw Devonta Freeman knocked out of the game and Dallas scoring off a Matt Ryan turnover. It would be the last time the Cowboys would score in the game. The Falcons simply dominated after that, with Atlanta scoring 27 unanswered points, dominating on defense against a Cowboys team lacking both Ezekiel Elliott and Tyron Smith. The...

Adrian Clayborn ties Falcons single game record with five sacks

Adrian Clayborn ties Falcons single game record with five sacks

Clayborn is having the most dominant game of his career. Without Tyron Smith in the game, the Cowboys figured to struggle a bit against the Falcons’ pass rush. I just don’t think anyone saw a game like this coming. Adrian Clayborn now has five sacks in this game, having annihilated Chaz Green en route to every single one of them. Dak Prescott has barely stood a chance as Clayborn has come at his blindside over and over again, bringing him down and even forcing a fumble. Not only is this the finest game of Clayborn’s solid career, but it ties the Falcons’ single game record for...

Matt Ryan hit 40,000 yards faster than any other quarterback in NFL history

Matt Ryan hit 40,000 yards faster than any other quarterback in NFL history

Just another milestone for the best quarterback in Falcons history. Again, you know that Matt Ryan is a great quarterback, but not everyone recognizes that. With every new mark he hits, though, the picture becomes a little more clear. Today against the Cowboys, Matt Ryan became the fastest quarterback to hit 40,000 yards in the long history of the NFL. He did it in 151 yards, which was one game faster than Drew Brees and two games faster than Dan Marino. You’ll note that both of those guys are either current or future Hall of Famers, which bodes well for Matt Ryan. Matt Ryan eclipsed...

Falcons - Cowboys second half open thread

Atlanta’s got the lead at the half. Dak Prescott is trying to win this game himself, and while it’s close so far, he hasn’t been able to do it. The Falcons lead 10-7 at the half, and hopefully that will continue. This is your second half open thread. Enjoy!

Devonta Freeman exits game with possible concussion

Devonta Freeman exits game with possible concussion

The Falcons may have to navigate the rest of the afternoon without him. On just his second carry of the game against the Dallas Cowboys, Devonta Freeman took an uncalled helmet-to-helmet hit that left him coming up woozy. Ed Hochuli forced him out of the game, Freeman went to the medical tent, and then he was off to the locker room. If Freeman is being evaluated for a concussion, as I suspect he is, there’s virtually no chance he’ll return to this game. That’ll leave Tevin Coleman and third back Terron Ward, who has barely touched the football in 2017, in charge of keeping this...

Lots of NFC games in the afternoon slot. Not a whole lot of rooting interest for Broncos fans There is like no rooting interest for Denver Broncos fans late in the afternoon. The only AFC team playing is the Houston Texans and who cares what they do in their game. From a football fan perspective, the Atlanta Falcons and Dallas Cowboys will likely be the game to watch this afternoon as we wait for Sunday Night Football to get here. Falcons vs. Cowboys open thread, tracker, and how to watch

Sunday is for (playing) the (Cow)boys. It has been difficult to get overly amped up for this matchup. We’ve seen the Falcons cruise into matchups that seemingly favor them, including games at home against opponents missing key pieces, and seen them come up short too many times this year. They’re 4-4 right now, and while a win here would be meaningful and certainly would get the season back on track, there’s a fair and healthy amount of skepticism surrounding that possibility. That said, it’s Sunday, so it’s time to cast away our worries and doubts and cheer for the team, and...

Final score predictions for Falcons vs. Cowboys in Week 10

Final score predictions for Falcons vs. Cowboys in Week 10

Our staff is mostly bullish on the Falcons winning, but there are dissenters. DW Falcons 27 - Cowboys 24 For whatever reason - insanity, alcoholism, pointless positivity - I think the Falcons find a way to win on Sunday. I still believe this is a supremely talented team that can beat any other in the league, if they just get out of their own way. Matt Ryan has been getting progressively better as the season has worn on, even if the stats don’t reflect it. Being at home should help as well. It’ll still be a hard fought game but I’m picking our birds - potentially for the last...

Fantasy Start/Sit for Falcons vs. Cowboys

Fantasy Start/Sit for Falcons vs. Cowboys

Who will emerge as the best option in the Cowboys backfield, and who can you trust in your lineup on Sunday? This game suddenly got a lot more interesting, for fantasy purposes, with the loss of Ezekiel Elliott. Managers will be watching the new look backfield of the Cowboys closely on Sunday—who will emerge as the best option between the committee of Alfred Morris, Rod Smith, and Darren McFadden? Will Dak Prescott actually increase in value with Elliott gone? I tackle all these questions and more in this week’s Fantasy Start/Sit. Let’s get started. START Falcons RB Devonta...

Cowboys vs. Falcons: Top Positional Matchups to Watch

With Zeke out, the Falcons are presented with a golden opportunity. When Ezekiel Elliott’s suspension was upheld this week, the Falcons’ chances in this game got a whole lot better. After a painful loss to Carolina, this team needs all the help they can get. Obviously, Elliott is a monster and would’ve caused serious problems for this Falcons’ defense. With Dez Bryant and Tyron Smith banged up and questionable to play, the focus is put on containing Dak Prescott, Dez Bryant, and Cole Beasley. The Cowboys’ defense (14th total) has some good pieces like Sean Lee, David Irving, Byron...

NFL power rankings: Atlanta Falcons keep sliding after week nine loss to Carolina Panthers

NFL power rankings: Atlanta Falcons keep sliding after week nine loss to Carolina Panthers

Fact: Matt Ryan doesn’t clap much these days; even when he’s happy, even when he knows it The Atlanta Falcons will square off against the Dallas Cowboys Sunday afternoon. I don’t want to call it a must-win game, because let’s be honest, the NFC South is suddenly pretty competitive and the Falcons may have already squandered their playoff aspirations. Pundits are rapidly losing faith in the Super Bowl runner up, and that’s evident when you look at this week’s power rankings. (My apologies that these are coming so late in the week. I had to bail Dave out of jail again and that...
