Grading the Cowboys last-second victory over the Falcons

Grading the Cowboys last-second victory over the Falcons

Dallas brings home another good looking report card. Your Dallas Cowboys returned to the scene of the crime, Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium, looking for their first two-game win streak of 2018 and a chance to get back into the NFC East division race. Consider both objectives met in a gritty, final-play victory. Let’s go to the grades. OVERALL: A It wasn’t always pretty. There were numerous costly mistakes and blown opportunities. And the defense, which played well overall, kind of wilted at the end. But road victories in the NFL don’t come with style points and this win will look...

Michael Gallup to take leave of absence after his brother’s suicide, status uncertain for Thursday

Somber news for the Cowboys after their big win. As the Cowboys were celebrating their huge win over the Atlanta Falcons, tragic news started circulating the locker room. Rookie wide receiver Michael Gallup found out that his brother had died, a victim of suicide. Jason Garrett confirmed that news. “We just found out after the ballgame that his brother had committed suicide and just wanted to leave it at that,” Garrett said. “Obviously a very personal matter. We’re all behind Michael and supporting him and his family, and this is a very challenging time for him. We’ll take it...

Falcons vs Cowboys: Vote for the defensive player of the game

Falcons vs Cowboys: Vote for the defensive player of the game

This is a sad, sad list. The Falcons defense held another team to under 24 points. In some ways, that’s deserving of a huge celebration, if it weren’t for the fact that they still gave up a ton of yards and the game winning field goal in the last seconds of the game. I hate everything and I want you to suffer with me. Fin. Vic Beasley After perfecting his role as the Invisible man for the majority of the season, Beasley reminded us of why he was a first round pick a few years ago. He netted 2 sacks and showcased his speed on Sunday. If only we could see it more than once in a blue...

3 Falcons up, 3 Falcons down in Week 11 loss to Cowboys

3 Falcons up, 3 Falcons down in Week 11 loss to Cowboys

Go ahead and put this season on ice. The Atlanta Falcons fell to 4-6 on the season and all but eliminated their playoff hopes after falling 22-19 to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. Who’s up and who’s down in the loss? Up Vic Beasley Beasley hadn’t sacked the quarterback in what seemed like eons, but he was able to get to Dak Prescott twice. I’d hesitate to say it’s the start of a roll for the former first-round pick — although the Falcons would benefit greatly — but it was nice to see him seal the deal twice after several almost-sacks. Julio Jones You know why Jones is here....

Falcons vs Cowboys: Vote for the offensive player of the game

Falcons vs Cowboys: Vote for the offensive player of the game

Yes, you have to vote. The Falcons sit at 4-6 and are likely out of the playoff race at this point, barring a complete miracle to finish the season. They only put up 19 points at home against the Cowboys, but there were some positives on the day on offense if you squint hard enough. Here are the only candidates I could think of for the offensive player of the game. Julio Jones Julio was a freak of nature yet again, hauling in 6 catches for 118 yards and a touchdown. However, his destruction of Jeff Heath probably saved a potential interception while also showing that Julio is not just an...

Film room: 3 things we learned from Cowboys-Falcons, including why Leighton Vander Esch is undoubtedly a Pro Bowl LB

One year after a game against the Atlanta Falcons (4-6) ruined their season, the Dallas Cowboys (5-5) were able to escape Mercedes-Benz Stadium with a 22-19 win over their NFC foe. Missed opportunities killed Dallas' ability to put the game out of reach on multiple occasions, but in the end, the Cowboys were able to do just enough to eek out the victory.Led by fantastic performances by DeMarcus Lawrence and Leighton Vander Esch, the Cowboys defense put up an admirable performance, holding the Falcons offense under 20 points for just the third time this season. Another dominant performance...

Falcons vs. Cowboys recap: Uncomfortably numb

Falcons vs. Cowboys recap: Uncomfortably numb

We recognize these mistakes will keep happening and pray they will not. My great fears heading into this game were that the Falcons would struggle to score points against a game Dallas defense, that Ezekiel Elliott would run all over Atlanta, and that in a close game things would go awry. I felt reasonably confident Atlanta would not struggle for motivation heading into this game, but in retrospect, that was the wrong thing to worry about in the first place. What has doomed the Falcons in every game except perhaps the road loss to Cleveland has been poor luck and downright incompetence....

Cowboys news: Zeke’s big day lifts Dallas over Atlanta to keep playoff hopes alive

The Monday morning links. Ezekiel Elliott was no spectator this time, helping lead Cowboys to key win - Todd Archer, ESPN Zeke had a huge role in the Cowboys getting their second-consecutive road NFC victory, as Elliott totaled over 200 all-purpose yards. Prescott’s late heroics complemented the all-round superior game of Ezekiel Elliott. He admitted he had a difficult time watching last year’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons. He was at his home, serving the first of a six-game suspension, forced to view it on the television. He finished with 23 carries for 122 yards and a touchdown...

The Cowboys defense handled the Falcons in Atlanta in a way that nobody else has this season

The Cowboys defense handled the Falcons in Atlanta in a way that nobody else has this season

The Dallas defense proved their mettle against a quality offense. Entering their game against the Dallas Cowboys, the Atlanta Falcons had experienced a lot of offensive success in their home - Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Atlanta has generally been strong offensively in the Matt Ryan and Julio Jones era, especially dating back to 2016 when they appeared in Super Bowl LI. That success has continued two years later although it hasn’t necessarily translated into wins. Dallas was the sixth home game of the season for the Falcons and the first in quite some time. Overall, they fared poorly on...

Changes after bye week are paying off for Cowboys

Changes after bye week are paying off for Cowboys

ATLANTA - The changes made during the Cowboys' bye week continue to pay off. The addition of Amari Cooper received most of the attention the previous two weeks. Sunday's 22-19 win against the Falcons was more about the offensive line.Ezekiel Elliott totaled 201 yards from scrimmage with 122 coming on the ground."They're being very dominant up front," Elliott said. "Whenever those guys do that and open up those holes, it's really easy for me. Those guys are the engine of this team. When they're going like that, we're going to be hard to beat."Three significant moves happened after the Cowboys'...

Defense is keeping the Cowboys in games. Their best rookie defender since DeMarcus Ware may be the reason why

ATLANTA -- Of the 18 players selected before Leighton Vander Esch in April, only a handful have justified the oversight. And if he keeps playing like he has in his last two starts -- which coincides with the Cowboys' modest little winning streak, by the way -- we'll have to widen our parameters to encompass more than just the last draft.Candidates for the last Cowboys rookie to look as good on defense as the one who made the difference in a 22-19 win over the Falcons before 74,447 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium:DeMarcus Lawrence in '14? Five things we learned from the clutch 22-19 Cowboys win over the Falcons

Five things we learned from the clutch 22-19 Cowboys win over the Falcons

One is that we are able to justifiably use the word “clutch” in the title. If you are a Dallas Cowboys fan, your heart rate probably was a bit elevated as the clock wound down in the 22-19 win over the Atlanta Falcons. It shouldn’t have been so close after Cole Beasley dropped a sure touchdown and Brett Maher missed an extra point, but there are no style points in the standings. And the standings say that the Cowboys are playing for a share of the NFC East lead on Thanksgiving. What a difference a couple of weeks make. Here are some lessons to take away from the first back-to-back win...
