Atlanta Falcons need cornerback Robert Alford to stay hot if they want to continue this playoff run

Atlanta Falcons need cornerback Robert Alford to stay hot if they want to continue this playoff run

Fact: Robert Alford The Atlanta Falcons won by overcoming slippery turf and an enormous, raucous crowd full of Los Angeles Rams fans, including Calvin Cordozar Broadus, Jr., last night. Now they’re headed to Philadelphia to face a quarterback not named Carson Wentz. Win and they’re headed back to the NFC Championship. Assuming that’s their goal, cornerback Robert Alford will surely play a substantial role. Alford signed a shiny new four year, $38 million contract extension in December 2016. It’s proving to be a shrewd move by general manager Thomas Dimitroff. The knock on Alford...

Atlanta Falcons talk: Give us your playoff predictions the rest of the way

Who is going to win it all? The first round of the playoffs is often a confusing, wonderful mess, and this Wild Card weekend did not disappoint. The Falcons upset the Rams, the Titans hugely upset the Chiefs, the Saints held on despite a spirited Carolina comeback, and the Jaguars beat the Bills. I guess that last one wasn’t all that surprising. Now that the field is a little more stable and we have the top seeds playing, though, I’m curious to see where you all have things finishing up. Are the Falcons primed for a revenge run that sees them win a championship? Will the Vikings play...

Observations from Falcons vs. Rams

Observations from Falcons vs. Rams

Here are some in-depth thoughts on the Falcons’ playoff victory over the Rams after re-watching the game. They did it! The #6 seed Falcons—the plucky, grizzled underdog—went into Los Angeles and took down the #3 seed Rams in what was a wire-to-wire thrashing of arguably the best offense in the league. That victory set a franchise record, as the Falcons had never before won playoff games in back-to-back seasons. It also sets up a Divisional Round showdown with the #1 seed Philadelphia Eagles, who feature a fearsome defense but are without QB Carson Wentz. After re-watching the...

Atlanta Falcons play Philadelphia Eagles Saturday at 4:30

Atlanta has another travel date lined up for next Saturday. Sure, you can keep enjoying what was an awesome, dominant game on the road by your Atlanta Falcons. Most of us had been thinking all week that with a win against the Los Angeles Rams, the Falcons have an easy path to the NFC Championship game. Indeed, Atlanta is now scheduled to play the Philadelphia Eagles next Saturday at 4:30. The game will be available nationwide on NBC with Cris Collinsworth. Collinsworth will undoubtably talk about the Super Bowl for 80% of the game. This will be a very interesting game. As soon as Carson...

3 Falcons up, 3 Falcons down in Wild Card win over Rams

3 Falcons up, 3 Falcons down in Wild Card win over Rams

And we’re off to the divisional round. The Falcons advanced to the divisional round of the playoffs with an impressive 26-13 victory over the Los Angeles Rams. Who’s up and who’s down in the win? Up Robert Alford Alford set up his personal no-fly zone in the secondary. He was thrown at six times and allowed just one completion for 15 yards, and also added three pass deflections. Alford did draw a defensive holding penalty, but it was largely inconsequential considering the game he had. Matt Bryant What else needs to be said about this guy? Bryant drilled two 50-yarders (51, 54) and...

Atlanta Falcons act like they had been in the playoffs, and easily beat up the St. Louis Rams 26 to 13

The Falcons were better everywhere: coaching, offense, defense, and special teams. Man, I was worried. I’ve seen too many Falcons teams in the playoffs. When one of the teams is a “major disappointment,” (thanks Chris Collinsworth), it’s usually my team. I was wrong to be worried. The Falcons were beating the living hell out of the Rams. My predicted best case scenario was a close win, but the Falcons brought this home by 13 points. This is honestly very surprising. And damn good. Both teams started slow, beginning the night with each team having two back-to-back three-and-outs....

Falcons-Rams post-game injury report: bloodied Matt Ryan visits medical treatment tent during victory

Fact: Matt Ryan will stand by you, he will stand by you, won’t let nobody hurt you, he will stand by you The Atlanta Falcons pulled off a huge victory on the road tonight, advancing to the divisional round of the NFL playoffs. They will play the Philadelphia Eagles next weekend, a favorable draw that could land the Falcons back in the NFC Championship. There’s a lot to talk about, but luckily injuries weren’t a significant issue tonight. Lots of Falcons came into tonight’s game a little banged up. Julio Jones, Devonta Freeman, Alex Mack, and Levine Toilolo all looked healthy...

Falcons 26, Rams 13: Philadelphia, here we come

The Falcons defense and special teams saved the day. Yes, really. The Falcons are back in the playoffs for the second straight year, but have to play on the road against the league’s best offense in the LA Rams. Here’s how the game played out. First Quarter The Falcons win the coin toss and elect to defer. The top scoring Rams offense starts with the ball. However, the high-powered offense was stymied early, with the Falcons defense forcing a 3 and out. The punt to Andre Roberts bounces behind him to the 6 yard line (of course). The Falcons offense failed to do much either, going three...

NFL Wild Card Game 2 open thread: Falcons at Rams

Saturday’s NFL nightcap should be a good one. Wow! What a finish and/or blowout or neither of the two! What a great/disappointing way to kick off the NFL Playoffs. Now that the Chiefs or Titans have moved onto the divisional round, it’s time for an NFC team to advance, and this Saturday night cap should be a doozy. The Los Angeles Rams took 2017 by storm. Expected to rebuild for a season or two under rookie head coach Sean McVay, the Rams got off to a surprise 3-1 start and never relented. Their move from 4-12 last year to 11-5 this year was the biggest improvement in the entire NFL....

Falcons at Rams - Live Blog

The Atlanta Falcons have had a tough year getting back to the playoffs and now they face one of the most dangerous Wild Card teams in the NFL in the Los Angeles Rams. The Los Angeles Rams (11-5) have turned their Jeff Fisher bullshit into a Wade Phillips powerhouse and will host the reigning NFC Champion Atlanta Falcons (10-6) in their first playoff game since returning to L.A. The Falcons had to scrape and claw their way into the playoffs in a tough NFC conference that featured three 9-7 teams. With their offense, they will always be dangerous, but they might just be facing the most...

Falcons-Rams playoff open thread, key info and tracker

Atlanta’s hoping for a second consecutive deep playoff run, while the Rams are hoping to continue a magical season. The entire season has built, haphazardly and with many fits and starts, to this moment. The Falcons are in the playoffs with essentially a clean slate, and the chance to wipe out a lot of the frustrations they endured during their 10-6 regular season that saw them finish third in the NFC South. Their opponent is the Los Angeles Rams, who have very few weaknesses besides an average run defense, a gaping hole at the kicker position, and playoff inexperience. There are a huge...

Atlanta Falcons, Los Angeles Rams inactives: Marvin Hall OUT, Nick Williams IN

Neither side was dealing with any major injuries, so both teams will head into tonight’s playoff game at full strength. The Atlanta Falcons weren’t dealing with any injuries late in this week. With Andy Levitre sent to injured reserve, and Devonta Freeman going back to practice, we didn’t expect any surprises with tonight’s inactives. By the Numbers stats preview: Falcons vs. Rams

By the Numbers stats preview: Falcons vs. Rams

How do the 10-6 Falcons compare to the 11-5 Rams statistically heading into their Wild Card match-up? The 10-6 Falcons have made the playoffs for the second straight year on the back of an immense defensive improvement. Their opponent, the 11-5 Rams, have rebounded in a major way from an abysmal 2016 season to become the highest scoring offense in the NFL. These two teams clash on Saturday in Los Angeles, with the winner advancing to the Divisional Round to face either the Vikings or the Eagles. There is a lot riding on this game for both teams, who each have Super Bowl aspirations in a...

What to remember if the Falcons win or the Falcons lose today

What to remember if the Falcons win or the Falcons lose today

The outcomes will leave the Falcons with either mildly enhanced draft position or a matchup against the Eagles. When the Atlanta Falcons meet the Los Angeles Rams tonight, they will either win or lose. That is the most obvious possible statement about the game, but even so, that simple statement is both accurate and carries significant meaning. That’s because a win here puts the Falcons in the Divisional Round of the playoffs and one step closer to a second consecutive Super Bowl berth. A loss, meanwhile, has them dreaming ahead for draft picks and free agent signings to come. Let’s...

Falcons - Rams series history: Atlanta’s 1-0 all-time in the playoffs

Falcons - Rams series history: Atlanta’s 1-0 all-time in the playoffs

The only stat that matters? We think so. The Rams have historically owned the Falcons. They were once rivals in the NFC West together, and over their long history, the Rams are up 47-29-2 all-time. That’s one of the better marks against the Falcons of any team they’ve played, unfortunately, and it means Rams fans have something to lord over us. Sort of. Because as it turns out, the Falcons won the most important game in the long history of the series, a 47-17 beatdown in the playoffs back in January 2005. That game featured Michael Vick throwing for just 82 yards as the Falcons ground...
