Blake Bortles has the third-highest YPC of any quarterback ever

Blake Bortles has the third-highest YPC of any quarterback ever

Blake Bortles had the longest play from scrimmage in a Week 1 win over the New York Giants — a 41-yard dash to midfield. It was a good play. A fun play, even. But it catapulted Bortles into the record books. With this run, Blake Bortles reached 1,452 rushing yards on 227 carries for 6.40 yards per carry. He now has the third-highest rushing average in NFL history among quarterbacks with at least 200 carries. The two quarterbacks higher? Giants vs. Jaguars: Snaps and stats from the new-look Giants

What can we learn from the stats and snap counts from the Giants’ season-opening loss? The first game of the New York Giants 2018 season is in the books. It wasn’t a pretty game, and considering it was a loss, it didn’t leave a particularly pleasant taste in the mouth. There were many things the GIants need to work on in this week of practice, but the team showed some positive signs as well. This was also our first chance to get a look at Pat Shurmur’s and James Bettcher’s schemes for the offense and defense. Let’s dive in to the snap counts and some of the statistics to see...

Week 1 report card: How did each position grade out?

Week 1 report card: How did each position grade out?

The Jacksonville Jaguars beat the New York Giants with ugly offense, spectacular defense, and an opportunistic special teams. Depending on what player you were watching and when you were watching them, the performance went from bad to great — and we’re here to debate how well everyone did. How did each position group grade out in Week 1? Quarterback: D+ Blake Bortles wasn’t good, folks. The interception was a bad throw (albeit a great play by Janoris Jenkins). The second half was bad and he couldn’t find a receiver when he needed to chew out the clock and win the game. He finished...

Pat Shurmur defends Ereck Flowers, other Monday takeaways

“He had a lot of really good plays and he had a couple that he’d like to have back.” Much of Pat Shurmur’s Monday media availability was devoted to questions about the play of Ereck Flowers in Sunday’s 20-15 loss by the New York Giants to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Shurmur said he had not considered removing Flowers from the game despite his struggles with penalties and pass protection. “He’s like every player. I think I know where you’re going with this, he’s like every player,” Shurmur said. “He had a lot of really good plays and he had a couple that he’d like to...

Was Jalen Ramsey right in Week 1 about Eli Manning?

In our first weekly installment of “Was Jalen Ramsey Right?” we had the pleasure of watching the Jacksonville Jaguars beat the New York Giants and a front row seat to analyzing the All-Pro cornerback’s comments about Eli Manning — a two-time Super Bowl champion who, in Ramsey’s words, is viewed as good as he is because of Odell Beckham, Jr. Here are Ramsey’s comments about Eli in this summer’s GQ article: “Eli [Manning]... It’s not really Eli. I think it’s Odell [Beckham, Jr.]. I won’t say Eli’s good, I’ll say Odell’s good. And their connection is...

Who won the battle between Saquon Barkley and the Jaguars defense?

Entering this weekends Jaguars at Giants game, much was made of the Odell Beckham Jr. versus Jalen Ramsey matchup. A premier wide receiver, coming off injury, testing his wares against an up and coming cornerback. While this was justifiably marquee, just below the headliner was the NFL debut of 2nd round pick Saquon Barkley versus the Jaguars defense. Who won the Barkley/Jaguars battle? That may depend on your baseline of expectations. Debate about the winner of the OBJ/Ramsey fight centered around stat lines, big plays, and who won. There was consideration of what defensive scheme the...

Giants vs. Jaguars: The plays that changed the game

Let’s look at key plays in Sunday’s loss by the Giants Every game is a series of plays, but not all plays are created equal. Some plays have more meaning than others and have a bigger impact on the final outcome. We can anecdotally talk about the big plays or we can use win probability to put a number on each play’s impact. Some of the biggest win probability swings might not be plays you’d immediately think about in a recap, but sometimes it’s the little things that eventually set up the bigger plays that have the most significance. Each week we’re going to look at those plays...

Keelan Cole on Bortles’ long run: “He got tired. I called him fat for it.”

Late in the third quarter yesterday, the Jacksonville Jaguars were backed up against their own end zone. Leonard Fournette had been out of the game and the rest of the offense was feeling it — with T.J. Yeldon filling in fine and Blake Bortles struggling to get into a rhythm with his receivers. It was second-and-10 and if there wasn’t some sort of movement forward, the Jaguars would face a long third down. The Jaguars opted for Bortles to run the ball — with a play action to Yeldon who got several Giants defenders to bite hard on the fake and allowed Bortles to run untouched for 41...

Saquon Barkley dazzled in Giants’ debut, but wanted to be just a few yards better

One great play that hinted at things to come, but Barkley hoped for more The Jacksonville Jaguars knew what they were facing as soon as they tried to tackle New York Giants rookie running back Saquon Barkley. “I knew right away. The first run and the first couple of times I tackled him, I said, ‘this kid has something,’ ” All-Pro defensive end Calais Campbell said after the game. Campbell made sure after the game that he found Barkley and swapped jerseys with the rookie. “Coming into the NFL against a team like ours, and making some of the plays he made, that kid’s going to be...

Jags optimistic about Fournette

Jags optimistic about Fournette

The Jacksonville Jaguars got a big scare on Sunday afternoon when Leonard Fournette tried to change direction on a run to the outside and went down holding his leg. Fournette limped off the field in what looked like a possible hamstring injury and after heading to the locker room early, it was announced he’d be out the remainder of the game due to a hamstring injury. Fournette was just getting warmed up running the ball, averaging nearly five yards a carry against the New York Giants, but ultimately ended his day early. So the big question heading into the Week 2 match up against the New...

Good teams win ugly

Good teams win ugly

The Jacksonville Jaguars picked up where they left off last season, picking up a 20-15 road win against the New York Giants on Sunday. It wasn’t a pretty game, but you don’t get any extra wins for style points. The Jaguars slopped their way through the game, with stout defense and sometimes anemic offenses and a great special teams play to take home the victory, which is what good football teams do. I used to say it when the Jaguars we’re getting their asses kicked week in and week out a few years ago, good teams find a way to win and bad teams find a way to lose. On Sunday, the...

If you watched the game, you should know where this is going There are no consolation prizes in the NFL. The New York Giants talked bravely after Sunday’s 20-15 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars about the good things they could take from their season opener. Still, this was a loss. In a game that was always within their grasp. At home. When they held the Jacksonville offense scoreless in the second half, and to 13 points overall. It’s a game they coulda/woulda/shoulda won had they just made a few more plays — a point coach Pat Shurmur was eager to make after the game. “That’s the...
