Raiders’ Del Rio vows to “keep it real” with players

The Raiders are lighting up the scoreboard, exuberantly dancing on the sideline and savoring their first 2-0 start since 2002, when they last reached the Super Bowl. Could they become too giddy with early-season success? Head coach Jack Del Rio promised not to let it happen in the wake of Sunday’s 45-20 thrashing of the Jets. “I’m always really honest. I keep it real with our guys,” Del Rio said in his weekly news conference Monday. “I try to shoot straight: ‘This is what it is. This is our standard, and this is what it needs to look like.

Three new additions step up in Raiders win over Jets

New players making plays for victorious Raiders The Raiders won their first home opener since the 2002 season, handling the Jets 45-20. This was a game the Raiders were expected to win and they certainly didn’t disappoint. While running back Marshawn Lynch getting his first Raiders touchdown, Quarterback Derek Carr’s 82% completion rate, and wide receiver Michael Crabtree’s three touchdowns are getting the headlines, there were three new additions who had great games themselves. Gareon Conley This was the first game action that the Raiders first round pick (24th overall) has seen...

It took two games for Jets to sadly accept their tanking fate

The Jets got destroyed by the Raiders in Oakland on Sunday, losing 45-20. Here are a few thoughts and observations from the game: 1. The NFL is all about overreactions. Every week is a drama for every team where people are ready to anoint or abandon teams. Last week, the Patriots were done. This week,...

Raiders-Jets week 2 snap counts: Nicholas Morrow impresses with increased playing time

Raiders-Jets week 2 snap counts: Nicholas Morrow impresses with increased playing time

After a shaky start for the Raiders linebackers in the season opener, a change was already needed. Credit to the Raiders coaches for making that change in week two. Or at least experimenting with a change to see how it turned out. Seeing decreased snaps were Tyrell Adams (38%) and Marquel Lee (18%) who had split time in the opener. Getting increased time was undrafted rookie Nicholas Morrow whose snaps jumped from just 4 (6%) to 25 (45%). Morrow was second in snaps at inside linebacker behind only Cory James who played every snap on defense (56). In Morrow’s time on the field, he put up 3...

The Jets want to be able to dance like Marshawn Lynch

OAKLAND, Calif. — Marshawn Lynch is not known as a running back who does a lot of dancing, but he did some in Sunday’s 45-20 win. Early in the fourth quarter after the Raiders took a 35-13 lead, Lynch did a wild dance on the sideline that was shown on the Oakland Coliseum scoreboard, sending...

Raiders: Game grades

Offense Nice start for offensive coordinator Todd Downing, with 71 points and 769 yards through two games. Another telling stat: The Raiders didn’t commit a turnover against the Titans or Jets. Defense There were some penalties, mistimed jumps (hello, David Amerson) and ultimately two Jets touchdowns. But the Raiders also allowed only 271 yards and sacked Josh McCown four times. Special teams Johnny Holton deserves credit for racing downfield to...

OAKLAND, Calif. — Where, oh where, was Julian Goodman when you needed him? Goodman was the president of NBC on the afternoon of Sunday, Nov. 17, 1968. It was Goodman who’d made the declaration earlier that week that no matter where that day’s Jets-Raiders football game stood at 7 p.m. Eastern time, the network would...

Raiders with highest scoring game in Reggie McKenzie era, Carr surpasses Flores, other superlative in win over Jets

If you found yourself wondering how long it had been since the Raiders had scored 45 points in a game, the answer is a long time. To be exact, the last time the Raiders scored as much or more than the 45 points they scored Sunday against the Jets was 7 years ago. In week 7 of 2010, the Raiders put a hurting on the Broncos 59-14. Many Raiders fans remember that day as Darren McFadden’s career game in which he scored three rushing touchdowns with 165 yards on the ground. But since that day the Raiders hadn’t even scored 40 points in a game before Sunday. Even with their high flying...
